HOPE IS ON THE WAY??? HOW ABOUT HELP IS ON THE WAY!
Hope in one hand, pee in the other and see which one fills up first.

Hate to be a party pooper, but the real message should have been, HELP IS ON THE WAY.

Whatever. It's out there now and there's no changing it. But I really long for the days when government really could provide help rather than hope.

Where the hell are the FDRs of yesteryear?

3. Regardless of whether Cheney used that phrase, Edwards and the
Kerry campaign wisely chose the word "Hope" rather than "Help", IMO. The RW would have been all over the phrase if he'd used "Help", aligning it with "welfare state" and "big government" memes.

5. The RW would be all over any phrase used by Dems
Edwards could have said "A chicken in every pot," and the RW would have accused him of being someone who wanted to give away food to "welfare queens."

Fuck them. They're going to attack no matter what is said, so let's at least offer more than just hope.

6. Yes, they will attack
but what Edwards did was very well was make their target very, very, teeny, tiny, itsy, bitsy, eeny, weeeny... small.

...apologies to Rosan Rosanadana

13. Did you hear all the specifics he offered in the 2nd half of the
speech? (more specifics are of course on the Kerry-Edwards website). He isn't asking people to just "hope."

2. I believe that the 'Help is on the way' line was used by *...
either during his campaign in 2000, or shortly after. It would have sounded awful for Edwards to repeat it as a positive statement after * lied his ass off with it. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall the line.

7. You don't get it...
...this is not Bush/Cheney 2000 doling out help in the form of tax cut bribes. We are not here to buy votes.

This isn't the Great Depression. This election is not about handouts, it's about opportunity.

In the America we're going to build every child should have the same chance to live the American Dream no matter what family their born into or the color of their skin.

What Bush has taken away from us in the past four years is that hope. Ordinary families can't afford college, people working full time are still living in poverty, and too many are dying in Iraq.

I'm not looking for government to hand me money. The Republicans are already doing that. All I want is hope. Hope for the future. Hope that I can grow up in an America where everyone has a chance, in an America that's once again looked up to and respected by the world.

Hope is on the way.

8. DjTj: I repeat. Hope in one hand, pee in the other and see
which one fills up first. Hope ain't enough.

New G.I. bills; college loan programs; grants to the arts; government assisted day care centers; extended unemployment benefits; job training programs; and a real Medicare prescription program rather than the bullshit handout to the HMOs and pharmaceutical companies that the rethugs passed.

These things aren't hope or handouts. They're part of what used to be called the responsibility of government towards it's citizens.

9. Here's what Edwards laid out tonight:
- Tax breaks for corporations that keep jobs in America
- A tax credit for health care and allowing all Americans to buy into the same plan that U.S. Senators use, which will cut health care costs up to $1,000.
- A $1,000 tax credit for child care.
- A $4,000 tax break for college tuition.
- Raising the minimum wage.
- Providing incentives for teachers to go to the neighborhoods where they're needed the most.
- Providing incentives for companies to locate where jobs are needed the most.
- Providing health care to all American veterans.
- Paying for this by rolling back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans, closing loopholes in the corporate tax code, and cutting wastfeul spending on government contractors.

10. Hope fills up first
At least in my hand. If it helps, I've got an overflow of hope. I'll give you some of mine.

Let go of your piss, and grab a handfull of hope. It will carry you far.

12. The American Red Cross is already using "Help is on the way"
Liddy Dole ran the American Red Cross and now she is a republican senator, so it has too much of a redcross / republican feeling to it.

"Hope" worked for Clinton, the boy from Hope.
