Grandpa gets confused AGAIN- he DOESN'T KNOW who leader of Iran is!
Edited on Tue May-20-08 10:21 AM by npincus
OK, not funny anymore.

The presumptive GOP nominee doesn't know who the actual foreign and nuclear policy leader of the nation he's been saber-rattling about is? The threats emanating from Grandpa are based on rantings of a kook with a title (president) who does NOT determine Iranian policy. The former, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is the leader of Iran and not Ahmadinejad, so McCain wants to "bomb Iran" on the false belief that the latter is in charge of that country?

Pretty BIG f*cking news, isn't it? Why does the MSM allow this false argument to go on?

John McCain berates Obama, calls him "inexperienced" citing that he's going to have talks with Ahmedinejad....WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. As stated, the premise is erroneous; Ahmadinejad is NOT the leader of that country. Why doesn't the MSM call him on this before Americans get whipped in to another paranoid they're-coming-to-kill-us frenzy? Further, Grandpa beseeches the reporter to "ask any American" who they think the leader of the Iran is!!!!!! Is that how he plans to govern?

OBAMA CAMPAIGN, JUMP ON THIS!!!

From May 19 press conference, Joe Klein to Gramps:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/20/mccain-confronted-with-ne_n_102614.html

KLEIN: I've done some research, and um -

MCCAIN: I have too.

KLEIN: Also checked, also checked with the Obama campaign and he never, he's never sai -- mentioned Ahmadinejad directly by name. He did say he would negotiate with the leaders, but as you know - Ayatollah,

MCCAIN: (Laughing) Ahmadinejad is, was the leader.

KLEIN: But if -

MCCAIN: Maybe I'm mistaken.

KLEIN: Maybe you are, because -

MCCAIN: Maybe. I don't think so though.

KLEIN: The Supreme, you know, according to most diplomatic experts, the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is the guy who's in charge of Iranian foreign policy and also in charge of the nuclear program, but you never mention him. Do you, you know, um, why do you always keep talking about Ahmadinejad since he doesn't have power in that, in that realm?

MCCAIN: Oh I thin-Again, I respectfully disagree. When he's the person that comes to the United Nations and declares his country's policy is the extermination of the state of Israel, quote, in his words, wipe them off of the map, then I know that he is speaking for the Iranian government and articulating their policy and he was elected and is running for reelection as the leader of that country. Yes sir, go ahead.

NEW REPORTER: One more quest-

MCCAIN: I mean, the fact is he's the acknowledged leader of that country and you may disagree, but that's a uh, that's your right to do so, but I think if you asked any average American who the leader of Iran is, I think they'd know. Go ahead. Or anyone who's well-versed in the issue.

1. At some point in the campaign McCain will lose his legendary temper
while Obama will remain his cool self. Who would the American people want answering that 3AM call?

6. "God help us" is right.
This is how is starts... the MSM (so-called "Fourth Estate") allows this fundamental factual error to go uncorrected and unchallenged which becomes the foundation for the public support of a counter-productive or destructive policy-- in this case, support for military action against Iran and support for a candidate who is incompetent. Sound familiar?

Please, Obama.... educate the old man and the rest of America before it's too late.

4. I remember Joe Klein being on Morning Joe once
and they were talking about that "Obama rhetoric vs substance" narrative. And Joe Klein said "Actually, both democrats are really substantive about policy. I think it's John McCain that we have to be worried about more on substance." And Joe Scarborough gave the most bewildered face and said "Really? Uh Oh." The prospect looked completely shocking to Scarbs. Good times.

The Iranian president may not have absolute power, but he does hold considerable both in internal economic matters and in foreign policy, and is directly elected from the people- in the past presidents who were not favoured by the Ayatollah were elected. The Ayatollah if you like is sort of like the judge of the supreme court- as in the US policy must follow the consitution, so in Iran policy must follow the constitutional Islamic nature of the republic (whether we consider that as right or not is irrelevant, it is their country), and the Ayatollah ensures that- however as in the US, the president has considerable policy power within that framework. This kind of argument looks to me as the kind of thing Republicans use who wish to paint everybody who doesn't like the US as undemocratic, despotic, tyrants who don't like the noble American principles of democracy.

If you'll negotiate with Iran, you'll talk with Ahmadinejad. McCain is right on that one.

22. History has shown us that if An Iranian "official" disagrees...
with an ayatollah, it is NOT the ayatollah whose life is terminated.

Just sayin'.

You can ask Ahmadinejad, but the ayatollah will give the answers.

23. Wrong
Ahmadinejad is the President of Iraq. It is a position that is nothing but a figure-head for the true ruling power in Iran, and that would be Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei is the true power in Iran.

Haven't we had enough of "mindless macho" diplomacy? Eight years of preemptive wars, saber rattling, economic peril, and a world made less safe?

YES, WE HAVE!

and we try to compensate and correct where we can. However, at that point in life, we DO know enough not to run for President of the United States.
