51. Less than Dean & Lieberman, but not less than Clark & Kucinich.
Dean's the one all over the news. The media likes his controversial nature.

All the others have MUCH less air time, and when I DO hear about them on TV, it's something negative. Like Kerry's campaign isn't cutting it, Lieberman's appeal has gone down, etc.

It's a miracle anyone else has decent scores in the polls, considering the lack of media coverage. And Dean's complaining about being attacked. Truth is, he loves it. It gets his name on the news.

14. Kucinich Vegan & Meat Industry Mad Cow
Question is cheaply phrased... As someone who doesn't eat meat, with mad cow and all, how can you do for farmers?

Farmers in Iowa want a President to make sure he can get parity in price and enable them to get their goods to market.

What will help them is that I plan to take care of the things they care about, to break up agricultural monopolies, ensure the FDA is responsive to their needs such as in support for tests (mad cow)

Well be enacting policies that will enable the farmer to feed his family. That's what they care about not what I eat.

Ended on a shrill note. Minus points for that but answer was excellent

23. Interesting contrast to Edwards's "you and I can change America together."
Edwards said that first, and then dean was left with "I can't do it, you can do it." It sounded kind of watered down compared to Edwards.

26. Dick Gephardt is talking about his great education in Saint Louis...
...public schools. Funny, considering my father was in his class. Just that bit of "home" from the dogtown boy.

Now CMB. Says that when the Constitution was written, it didn't apply to her. Excellent closing statement from her. She deserves a cabinet position dammit.

Now Kucinich. Budget cuts are because of Iraq. End of fear, beginning of hope. Reconnect with world community. Re-establish our civil liberties.

Edwards. Not just talking, but listening. I'm ready for this fight. Putting forth his "from the people" credentials. Edwards selling himself as an outsider. I believe in you.

Lieberman. Running because I love this country and hate the direction GB is taking us. I can get elected (?). We aren't going to defeat Bush with anger. Rejecting extremism, shared values, common goals (Iraqi Liberation Council?, PNAC?). Anger, negativism, and division don't win (then why rely on it so much).

Dean. Frontrunner in this campaign is George W Bush. The American people are the underdogs. Stump speech closer.

Kerry. (will he resist a swipe?) Can't beat him by being lite...ok, Kerry is going to use his closing statements to attack Dean, not Bush. <click> Kerry says, "If he wants to make national security the issue of this campaign..." then he says he'll PERMIT IT and take him on regarding national security. Wrong answer, don't let Bush make the election all about national security.

That's it. moderator is thanking everyone.

and that's a wrap...

41. I don't support Gephardt, but he did well in this debate. As did Edwards.
I think they were the two winners.

Dean didn't totally screw up, so he'll still be the frontrunner in that state. But the others clarified some (bad) points about him, and that'll cost him a bit.

Kerry - it was a wash for him.

Lieberman - It's getting painful to watch him. No chance of winning. What's he doing?

Braun - She shouldn't be up there taking time from the serious candidates. She has absolutely no chance of winning, so she should bow out now, for the sake of the country and the party. It was okay for her to be in before, but now it's getting tiresome.

56. I was there...outside
Dean supporters were out in force in a major blizzard. Edwards had a nice group, and Kerry and Gep had a handful. We had the giant "Win With Dean" signs hoisted up on cranes, which was hilarious and dwarfed the others. We also had tons of AFSCME people there.

Dean came and said hi to us, said a few words, and we followed him down the road to the entrance. It was great, ans showed our dedication.

Will try to post pics in a few days.

63. My Analysis
I think Edwards won the debate; thought he was just excellent

Thought Dean had a terrific closing statement & did nothing that will hurt his front place status

Gebhardt was terrible

I was hoping Kerry would do better; he didn't; his answers are always too long, he is too pompous, & doesn't connect with people; he needs to lighten up.

Kucinich was Kucinich

CMB was gracious, well spoken, & she will not win

Lieberman was the horrible; he should really leave the party.

I am still supporting Clark; Clark/Edwards would be great!!!!!

The first few debates were somewhat interesting to political junkies like us, but Joe Six-pack doesn't waste a Sunday afternoon watching the fifth in a series of 96 debates between the 834 Democratic candidates.

Many of them watch Meet The Press, though...

Hello - Everyone is watching the NFL playoffs. Only Iowa and DU watched this debate and even that is suspect. Check the Nielsen overnights, MTP will beat the 'Iowa Debate'. Plus he got a one-in-one forum to pre-announce his tax reform plan.
