Obama Now Controls the Democratic Party

by BooMan
Sat May 31st, 2008 at 07:45:20 PM EST

Well...a remarkable thing just happened. We just discovered that the Clintons no longer control the Democratic National Committee. They were unable to win a single argument today. The Obama campaign joined both the Florida and Michigan Democratic Party's proposals, and both proposals prevailed. In Florida, the delegation was restored but given only half votes. In Michigan, the delegation was also restored, but given only half votes. But the Rules and Bylaws Committee (RBC) chucked out the results of the Michigan primary and instead used a formula awarding Obama all Uncommitted delegates plus four delegates the election results would have awarded to Clinton.

As a result, the absolute voting power of both states was halved. Clinton emerged with 19 net votes out of Florida, but that is offset by 4.5 votes that Edwards received. Her advantage out of Michigan was a mere five delegates. In other words, she picked up approximately 20 delegates today. In addition, the RBC did not recognize the validity of the Michigan primary thereby undermining any claim that the Clinton's could make for winning the popular votes there.

During the vote over the Michigan proposal, Harold Ickes spoke for the Clinton campaign. He was furious and he accused the committee of 'hijacking' four of Clinton's delegates. He informed the committee that he had been instructed by Hillary Clinton to tell them that she reserved the right to appeal their decision at the Credentials Committee in Denver. This evoked a very angry response from one of the black members of the Committee (I'll update with his name) who gave a history lesson on the Mississippi Freedom Party and showed real moral indignation at the dishonest and insincere arguments that have been made by Harold Ickes and some other Clinton allies. The most important signal came from former DNC Chair Don Fowler of South Carolina. Fowler is very well respected and he is a prominent Clinton supporter. He sharply disagreed with Ickes. He said that he didn't get what he wanted out of the negotiations but that he supported the Michigan proposal as the best and fairest solution available to bring about party unity. He praised Jim Roosevelt and Alexis Harman, the co-chairs, for running an excellent hearing.

Nevertheless, the final vote was 19-8. It was a 2-1 decision that was supported by the Michigan Democratic Party and the Obama campaign. The Clintons may reserve the right to appeal but they don't have a leg to stand on. I understand that the Clinton campaign has also sent out a press release now reaffirming their right to appeal. So, we'll have to see what the Clintons will do, but it is clear that their camp is angrier than a swarm of hornets.

Personally, I think we should treat them like a swarm of hornets and run for cover, because they're capable of anything right now.

As for the New Math, the new magic number will be 2,117 or 2,118 (when Donna Edwards is elected, it will change the math slightly). Obama now has 2,053 delegates and so is 64 delegates short of the nomination. He will win approximately 42 delegates from the remaining three contests. So, I think we can say with confidence that he needs 20-22 superdelegates out of the remaining 205 superdelegates. In reality, between not yet awarded add-on delegates, Edwards delegates, the Pelosi delegates that will go to the winner of the pledged delegate war, Rahm Emanuel, Jim Clyburn, Donna Brazille, etc., Obama already has more than the 20-22 delegates he needs. He is now assured of winning the nomination and he can probably make that announcement official after the polls close in Montana on Tuesday night.

Let's all take a moment to celebrate.

1. Not at all
Edited on Sat May-31-08 08:29 PM by OzarkDem
He controls nothing more than a group of Democrats, and I'd question whether many of them actually are.

On edit, it might not be a bad idea for him to attempt to exert that presumed power. The sooner the rank and file members of the party wake up and realize what an unprincipled, greedy, power hungry person he is, the sooner they will rid themselves of his influence.

I think it would be a good idea for him to attempt to exert his illusory power. The sooner he gets a reality check from the Democratic base, the better.

she's been awful busy in the 'Reality free' zone, curled up in the fetal position, trying to convince the great unwashed masses to convert to 'oppositelandism,' or strafing message board threads with bile and hatred. With all that going on, I don't suppose she has time to devote to being a part of the democratic base

106. You know what's funny?
That you're obviously not talking about Democrats when you say "our".

Lots of people are going to suffer his Presidency, but it won't be the people.

It will be Republican Politicians who suffer from the straight ticket bloodbath he'll bring in November.
It will be Members of the Bush administration that will be investigated for war crimes.
It will be the 'poor starving' defense contractors.
It will be 'welfare king' Oil Companies who might have to pay a fair share of taxes.
And he will have to put up with the Corporate Media that will fight him tooth and nail for all of that suffering he causes TPTB.

I'm not sure which one of those you lump yourself in with, or if you're just some poor, stupid, brainwashed dupe that the Powers that Be toss out like so much fodder, but the bottom line is that you know nothing about the man while making gross, ignorant projections.

I'll be quite glad when all of you one-note-wonders are out of here and the adults can have the place back. Or I'll be tremendously shocked if you can manage to change your tune. But I'll bet your job will be done here by Wednesday and we won't see you around anymore.

Dean can't give the DNC to anybody. The DNC is Democrats. Some support Obama. Some support Clinton. Just look at the rules committee - it was NOT an anti-Clinton set up.

The DLC, otoh, is very clear that it stands in opposition to Dean, not in oppostion to the DNC, because they want to take the DNC over again - they really want to lose some more elections, I guess.

It is the DLC that is splitting the party - just as they were designed to do with their "third way" bullshit. As far as I care the DLC can all go and suck Lieberman's dick.

Not Obama, but it's nice that Obama was in the right side. We Democrats are are not ruled by any individual, and our party should be guided by principles. Republicans follow the leader with glazed eyes and little CHina-made American flags in their chubby fists. Good Americans do not surrender their reason or their liberty to a Decider.

Obama can deliver a Democratic majority and the Clintons are best known for losing them.

This was about the Democratic party getting the spine to define themselves as "Democrats", rather than "not Republicans".

Time to clean house and start working for the people over the privileged.

We have Bill Clinton to thank for much of what is wrong with this country: corporate media (Telecom Act of '96) the loss of middle class jobs (NAFTA & most favored trade status w China) and partially for the mortgage crisis (banking mergers). It's time to bring back our party to work for the people and send the lobbyists packing!

The 73-55 split is based on the popular vote, which Clinton could then claim she was ahead in. Now, because they based it on the vote AND the other data, the popular vote in MI is irrelevant. Interesting.

40. I just didn't understand why he drew the line there
Because the 4 delegate difference wasn't going to affect the outcome, so I thought he'd magnanimously grant her that. It just makes much more sense to me realizing that it was also important to not use the popular vote of the flawed election as the basis of the decision since that would validate it as a legal metric and validate her "I won the popular vote" theme.

61. I thought that was pretty interesting as well..
The Michigan Democratic Party by asserting that their own election was invalid, really took the ball out of that court. I think at the beginning of all this, both these states had no idea that their states could still be in it after Feb 5.

And his victory in Nov will excise once and for all the idea that racism is the norm. For the first time in our history that evil will be on the outside looking in.

28. Whoa....
Even Craig Crawford is saying that Obama has replaced the Clintons as being in control of the Democratic party now.

http://blogs.cqpolitics.com/trailmix/2008/05/barack-in-charge.html

"Make no mistake about it. The decision rendered today by the Democratic National Committee's rules panel showed that Barack Obama has displaced Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, as boss of the party.

The DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee gave Obama exactly what he wanted - a firm decision on seating Florida and Michigan delegates. Even though Clinton wins a small net gain in nominating delegates, it is not enough to seriously boost her chances for the nomination.

No decision would have best served Clinton today. Her nomination hopes are dependent on a chaos theory, which would have been best supported by keeping the status of Florida and Michigan in limbo.

Losing what they needed today proves that for the first time in 16 years the Clintons are no longer in charge of the Democratic Party. There is a new boss in town."

64. This whole fluffed up affair was about developing the excuse
HRC has used Florida and Michigan as an excuse to stay in. After watching the exercise today and seeing so many of the comments from the Clinton supporters, it's clear this whole exercise was about maintaining the excuse to go to convention.

They don't want resolution. They don't want unity. They just wanted an excuse for HRC to stay in - thanks to the right to appeal. They were going to appeal anything short of seating the full delegations with full voting rights according to the results of the faux primaries in those states.

If they don't, what shoddy excuse could she use to buoy her supporters and keep them in the fight until "anything might happen" has a chance to happen. The committee hearing was simply a platform for outrage and rabble rousing. And they used it rather effectively. What Clinton supporter will bail on her now?

Rachel Maddow said it. I agreed with it the moment the words came out of her mouth. HRC is going to convention. And she'll get there by whatever means is necessary - no matter what harm it causes to the party, to the voters, to Sen. Obama, and to herself.

Why let truth and justice and doing the right thing get in the way of winning?
