support Obama. It's so crazy Mr. Writer.... there's no reason to mock the idea people look at an individual and are inspired by him. He's not a charmer. He seems aloof....but he is THE PERSON for OUR TIMES. Call it what you will.....but after the Bush years anyone is going to look good. Add in all of the features of Obama (heritage, storyline, intellect) and it's no doubt why people are truly moved by not just him but what kind of positive shift in our country he represents.

16. I can understand why Obama is winning this nomination and why he's earned all this adoration. |
|
This is the logical answer to seven years of malaise and waking up to yet another day without good news. We've all been lodged in our homes pleading, "Oh please oh please oh please. Give me something to hold onto. Please make me feel joy in the world again. I need to feel happy for once! Just once!" And Obama delivered that. With words. We've been abused for so long that we'll follow the shiniest beam of light out of the cave - regardless of where it leads.
And this is why I have been skeptical of all of this. The mob agreeing on something is still a mob.
BTW: It's MRS. Writer. :)

21. thanks for the clarification Mrs. Writer |
|
:)
I guess it's easy to see why Obama's audience skews younger. I'm 39, and I still find myself willing to suspend disbelief if only because I see there's meat there. He has a fantastic array of allies within the Democratic establishment who want to help him succeed.
Will he lead us somewhere catastrophic? No. I happen to know that even the most ridiculous president I've had the displeasure of witnessing could not take us to the point of destruction as a nation. Yes, Bush has damaged us and there is much work to do.
But as I read Obama's own words long before he could have seriously thought he had a chance at the presidency...I see a self reflective man. I see someone who witnessed enough varied circumstances of this world to be cautious and at the same time decisive.
He is a quick learner too which always helps in that job.
I'm glad he's exciting so many people. The people have the power and have become too complacent or cynical to realize it.

25. I'm cynical, but it's because I have LEARNED. |
|
I'm young (I'll be 33 on Monday, actually). But boy have I learned never to trust a smiling person who speaks kind words to me. The product is never as shiny as the packaging, and in this marketing-driven country I can't see how a politician is any different.
But one thing I'll say about Obama... (pssst... let me share a secret with you) The fact that he's in our generation is very reassuring. And I'm glad of it.

30. Well it's not that we're trying to bump them off or anything! |
|
But it's nice that we might lean more Ramones than Stones, know what I mean?
Here's another secret (psssst...) I don't think Obama is an idealist. Not by any stretch of the imagination. But I think he needs to use idealist language in this political environment. I think he's just as cynical as many of us. But what the older folks (and maybe some of the younger folks) don't understand is that if we are to actually fix anything we are going to have to cast aside pretense and actually get to work. Enough with the grandstanding bullshit and the need to highlight one's own grandiose accomplishments. "I AM A BABY BOOMER AND I HAVE CHANGED THE WORLD!" will not be replaced with "DUDE, LOOK AT ALL THE SHIT I'VE DONE! I ROCK!" Sorry. It's just going to get done. That's it. And that's a good thing, imho.

|
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 12:20 AM by ruby slippers
Barack Obama says in his book, "In His Words" on page 53 regarding "generational conflict" the following.
"I think that older folks hang on too long and stay in the way. I think that if a young person feels they can do a better job than somebody in the next generation, sometimes it's necessary to go ahead and run, and keep in mind that usually folks don't give up power too easily. It has to be wrested from them." ---Black Collegian, October 2006.
BTW, I'm 56 and of Hillary's generation, but I'm with Barack!
