Just a cheery hi and wondering what the word is from Puerto Rico. (BTW, isn't it time the place became a state?)
Hope all is well!

|
In 1967, 1991, 1993 and 1998. The 1991 did not count because it was a yes or no vote and did not included Independence or the current commonwealth. It is not about paying taxes but losing their identity as a nation, their culture, their language, et al. They would be losing more than a few bucks if you ask me. In essence, it isn't about money.

I wish it was a latte, but I can't afford one right now. It's overcast and rainy, but that's kind of normal. I lived most of my life in North Texas-too hot for me there now. San Diego is so beautiful-you are lucky to live in such a great place.

It is great for drinking coffee and reading a good book-absolutely! Where I come from is so hot and dry-it really makes me appreciate where I live now. I love Seattle-it is an awesome place. My Uncle Frank lived most of his life in San Diego-his house was near the beach-he always loved it so much there. My mother has been there many times and always talked about "Old Town" and a Mexican restaurant there-I can't remember the name but I've seen it on the Food Channel.

The only drawbacks are the traffic problems and the expense. Probably not too much different than San Diego prices I would think. If I had the choice though, I would live in San Diego because of the sun and the beaches. That must be so awesome. :)

Of course we've hit June gloom right now: the marine layer sticks around a good part of the day and keeps the air temp cool but the sky grey. Still, it's a change. Then July and August come and kick our asses with the heat. But that's where living near the beach is nice. Our microclimate here is cooler and I can walk down to the beach and walk in the water.

38. Five things to watch in Puerto Rico..... |
|
Five things to watch in Puerto Rico
............
SAN JUAN, P.R. – New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is counting on a big win in today’s Democratic presidential primary, one day after a party ruling left her presidential campaign on the ropes.
A landslide victory would bolster Clinton’s argument to superdelegates that she has received more votes than Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and is better equipped to win important Latino votes in a general election matchup with presumptive Republican nominee John McCain.
Puerto Rico hasn’t seemed particularly excited by all presidential campaign attention it has received in recent weeks but the island, a semi-autonomous territory of the United States, takes its politics seriously. Local elections draw upwards of 80 percent of its 2.3 million registered voters. But the debates – and even the parties – are largely based on disagreements about whether the island should continue as a commonwealth, become a state or an independent nation.
That political engagement has seldom extended to mainland-based campaigns because, while Puerto Rico will send 63 delegates to the Democratic convention, it has no electoral votes in the general election. Democrats have traditionally held presidential caucuses here and were intending to do the same this year until it began to appear the Clinton-Obama race would still be unsettled by the time Puerto Rico’s turn came.
Though many observers are predicting a modest turnout around 500,000 voters today, there’s not a lot of precedent for a contest like this—and that leaves plenty of unknowns.
Here are five things insiders will be watching Sunday:
The second wave of voters Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Puerto Rico is in the Atlantic Time Zone, but since it does not observe Daylight Savings Time, it’s clocks match East Coast time right now.) ........more..

Got a good filtration system and the robot does a good job of cleaning it.
Every two days go by with a pool skimmer.
Its salt water so it takes less chlorine and chemicals.
Its much less of a pain in the ass than I thought it would be.
Also cut all the trees in my yard down before putting it in so there aren't that many leaves to fall into it.

86. Let me rephrase that. |
|
Sloppy wording on my part, so apologies for that. Yes, people born in Puerto Rico have statutory citizenship under 8 U.S.C. 1402, but must still undergo the naturalization process for constitutionally guaranteed citizenship.
Notwithstanding, Puerto Rico is not a state, nor is it part of the contiguous U.S. U.S. citizens in Washington D.C. have no such barrier to their citizenship, yet are still taxed (which I believe PR citizens are not) and have no representation in Congress. It's a hideous situation, and it needs to be addressed.
Until you've been in a situation where you had serious need to contact a member of congress to advocate on your behalf and literally been hung up on and/or told that no one will listen to you, I don't think you'll fully understand how appalling that lack of representation really is.

The population of DC is larger than some states. You deserve at least 2 Senators and 1 House Rep.
However the GOP will block it because those are guarenteed democrats and they'll always be able to block it becuase it would require a constitutional amendment.

106. Yep. And in the meantime, congress will continue to use DC as its political plaything. |
|
Most people aren't aware of the way congress (primarily republicans) play around with DC's funding and laws as a purely political tool. The most galling instance of this was when DC overwhelmingly passed a medical marijuana initiative about ten years ago (when I lived there), and Bob Barr moved to effectively block all federal funding for the city unless and until the vote was nullified. It's maddening.
And now this libertarian convert wants to run for president and talk about state's rights? Spare me.

|
a "Commisionado Residente" or Resident Commissioner who votes at the Committee level but has no vote in the House.
I don't know why people say that Puerto Ricans do not pay Federal Taxes when in fact my father used to pay both Federal and local taxes. Federal employees or those who do business with the federal government, Soldiers, Puerto Rico-based corporations that intend to send funds to the U.S., etc. also pay federal income taxes. When the cutoff point for income taxation is lower than that of the IRS than Puertoricans pay local taxes only. But of course the income per capita is around the $19,000 so not very many people is in need to pay federal taxes. It is not that they don't want to pay taxes. In the end is convenent for Congress that they don't pay taxes so they don't have to listen to them.

politics in Puerto Rico are very passionate and passion gets on the way of making decisions for the good of their citizens. Funds are mismanaged by using those funds to bring about more power and influence to a candidate/political party and not for the good of the people. There are two parties that rules government. When one get in power it mismanages funds and then when the other comes around it have to "try" fixing the mess they are in. They are in this cycle right now where they are trying to pay for the corrupt acts of the party that was in power 8 years ago. So there, there's never the finances or the time to change the status cause they are busy fixing the local economy. It is VERY complicated, it is like American politics in steroids.

But in the end, politics is about itself and the people get nothing? Well, not too different from here these days. Politics becomes entertainment and not about getting things done.

"Politics is the national sport". But I would say it is like watching a "Telenovela" were the actors are over-the-top. There are voices of reason but those who aren't, the fundamentalists always manage to take over. Darwinian politics where the strongest (which is normally a bully) will always survive.

|
Although I really believe that is true in US politics as well. I was reading an old book by P.G. Wodehouse (the guy who wrote the Jeeves the valet series) and one of his humorous books, from about 1905-1910(?) talks about the Irish gangs in New York being hired by a candidate to beat up the supporters of opposition candidate. I think things may have gotten more slick since then, but it's the same Darwinian principle.

they still exist to a lesser degree. Not as bad anymore.
There was in the 60's and 70's what was called the "Turbas Republicanas" aka Puerto Rican freepers known to beat up people around the poll areas and help steal elections. They used to work as operatives at the polls and take the boxes with fresh ballots and trash them. Plenty of ballots were found at rivers and dumpters. They also helped suppress the pro-independence movement to the point that today people are still scared of becoming an Independent nation.

It's all the same, isn't it. We're taught to have such faith in our political institutions but they really are just frail things when compared with our genetic inheritance.

Clinton will do well in PR, she's the only Dem candidate who has strong support from the Hispanic community.
Interesting things in the blogosphere today. I'd post some links, but don't want to encourage the Obama trolls. You know where to look!

DU GDP has been the most readable, informative, and often entertaining board I've found. Many of you offer the most thoughtful and well-reasoned posts anywhere, bar none. Not surprisingly, there has been a bit of tension lately but I'm noticing more and more reconciliation and respect, and that makes me very happy.
Thank you all!
