So I was curious about michigan |
|
I didn't pay overmuch attention to the Michigan primary, since everyone agreed it was irrelevant. I do remember hearing about the "vote uncommited" thing, and being rather impressed that such a large number of people showed up to vote for a chimera.
My question, for someone who payed more attention than I: Was there any tracking of the number of Write-in's that were tossed out? is there any even reasonably credible estimate or number on those?

1. The official estimate I heard was 30,000 Obama write-in ballots. |

The 30,000 write ins were for Obama. That's true (or as far as I'm aware based on what was presented by Mark Brewer). It was the 44% of Uncommitted which was being divided between Obama and Edwards with Obama at 33% or so votes---> These were the assumed numbers since they can't decide who were the Obama voters.
Then they based a few on exit polls as well to determine the number estimate.

17. I think they estimated a 3-1 breakdown between Obama and Edwards |
|
That was also the approximate breakdown of preference between Obama and Edwards in the exit polling.

5. LOTS of write in's but it's anecdotal evidence. |
|
Apparently there are some voter privacy issues around breaking them out and counting them precisely. I don't understand the exact reason, but it was referred to during the RBC meeting.

10. I never did understand not counting write-ins |
|
Why would a write-in not be allowed?

11. They're allowed, but only if the candidate has 'registered' |
|
as a write in candidate option. It's to allow the possibility of write in's, but to avoid 'Donald Duck' winning the nomination.

15. That seems unfortunate. |

If the people want to elect Ficus, I personally think they should be able to do so. Assuming a fair counting of the votes, we get what we deserve.

13. The MI rules are that you have to register as a write-in candidate for them to count |
|
Obama took his name off because of the candidates' pledge to not "participate or campaign" in MI or FL. FL rules would not let them remove their names (Obama, Edwards, etc. tried). If you pledge not to participate, why would you let your name be on the ballot if you could take it off? Think it is a difference between integrity and parsing.

At this point, those who are so invested in this would still be protesting it if we restored them at 100%, and gave every single Michigan delegate to Hillary. It will always be something.

14. Their position is that "uncommitted" got the votes, not Obama |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 06:01 PM by bigbrother05
Any votes plegded for Obama would be too many for the Ickes crowd.
BTW it was the MI Dem Party that proposed the delegate split. The "beauty contest" was only one factor in how they came up with their allocation.
edit to add: Heard it reported that the Obama camp had the votes on the RBC to make it a 50/50 split, but backed the MDP plan in the name of unity.
