We are looking at a realignment of the party
It is coming, folks.

We are trading our racist mouth-breathers for disaffected Republicans and Independents.

Not people who want to move the party to the right -- people who are waking up and recognizing that the right is wrong and are willing to give lefty liberalism a chance.

I went from right of right to left of left -- and apparently there is a very long line behind me here of late. A long line of people who have realized that they have been lied to -- and are pissed about it. At least I still am.

This is going to be an exciting time.

I for one am looking forward to the maps changing.

Anyone with me?

7. I read the remarks- she won't be missed
But I hardly think there are a huge number of those. Most Hillary supporters will support the Nominee in November. The other choice is just to scary.

Sorry if I got a bit defensive there.

10. Not a problem. My apologies if I was making it sound like I was talking about ALL supporters
I am specifically referring to the "I'm voting McCain" asshats who care so much about healthcare and the well being of our troops that they will vote for 4 more years of the same old same old.

There are a lot of pissed off Republicans.

My gamble is that we are bringing in more disaffected THINKING people than we are going to lose the Harriet Christians of this nation.

One can only hope.

It is time--no well past time--that the citizens of this country take their collective heads out of their collective asses and face some very hard realizations.

42. Hopefully they are a vocal minority, but there were a lot of people like her at the meeting Saturday
It really felt like a hostile environment...my mom and I sat at one of the pubs eating lunch and we were surrounded by Clinton supporters and it felt uncomfortable...it didn't feel like we were members of the same party or even the same country. We tried to talk to a few of them but they were pretty hostile.

I for one am looking forward to it.

The only thing worse than an ex-smoker is an ex-Republican who feels lied to. Centrist/DINO is not an option.

We have to get them in office, and then keep them focused on the agenda. It doesn't end in November.

20. That'll be a true sea change, if so.
In the past, it's been deeply frustrating to see the numbers on individual issues, which Americans overwhelmingly poll as liberal, but when asked to identify as a political type, the numbers for liberal or democrat shrink to much lower numbers. Liberal never should have been made a dirty word--and I hope smart republicans are finally figuring that out.

28. Economic populism is the movement of the times
It's why we have been picking up seats in the Southeast. People here are remembering FDR, remembering that he did good things for the nation and for the region. I think an Obama presidency with FDR-esque policies will do a world of good towards rooting out persistent racism as well. If struggling rural whites see a black man who helps them out, it could spark a massive change.

The GOP will undergo a realignment as well if McCain loses. My bet is that the Ron Paul people will end up in control... It's kind of what happened with us. We didn't get the Naderites, exactly, but the concept behind the Nader "movement" was what led to the Dean movement. I think the GOP will drop social wedge issues in a few years and embrace the Paulites.

Write it down. Between the economic populist surge in the South and the likely Paulite takeover of the GOP, we could be looking at the South turning blue before the Mountain West.

40. I'm right there with ya
I think many people have woke up during the reign of King George and his republican party. I remember all the high paying jobs in the Clinton years. Everyone was doing pretty good.

Since the rethugs took over the rich and big business has done well. Of course the republicans have done all they could to oppress the working class and have declared war on the middle class.

Its just what they do. Anyone who works for a paycheck and votes republican might as well put a gun to his head. Because they are committing economic suicide.

GOBAMA!

54. Umm, If Hillary and Obama are the same politically, which you say further down the thread,
then shouldn't he be reaching out to the Left of the Party instead of the Right? If they're both DLC, then there's no need to reach out to Clinton voters specifically. Rational ones will realize that they have the same policies and beliefs and come to support Obama anyway, and irrational ones probably can't be reached anyway.

50. The Dean Revolution
Y'all remember he started this train early in the 2004 campaign. All the other Democrats were being cautious and trying to kowtow to the right wing. Then Dean and the grassroots and the net got the progressive idea back into gear. And even though Dean screamed, Kerry picked up his platform, with Dean as an enthusiastic surrogate all the way. Kerry lost, but Dean pushed Democrats to grow a little spine and challenged enough to win in '06. And now, finally, progressive Democrats are standing proud, winning primaries and caucuses in states they had no business thinking about, running a good race and challenging the rest of the party to raise its game, Democrats are registering new voters like mad, and now will be fighting for 50 states in November.

Props to Gov. Dean.
