So, my brother pulls up to the gas pump in his Ford Focus and a guy
in a huge SUV with a "W" sticker on it was pumping gas on the other side. My brother looks at him and says, "I bet you have fun gassing up that big sonofabitch vehicle."

The guy retorts, "Fuck you."

My brother laughs, and says, "No. Apparently, fuck YOU!"

Quite a contrast from a gas station story i read here at DU a few weeks ago, where a guy with a Bush bumper sticker actually apologized to the OP and said he had not gotten around to tearing the sticker off his car.

8. No kidding...
...if I couldn't pull off that "W", I'd chisel it off with a screwdriver. If the
screwdriver couldn't chisel off the "W", I'm smash my bumper with a tire iron. And if
the tire iron left any remaining bits of "W", I'd set the car on fire and drive it
over a cliff into the ocean.

And if that mocking bird don't sing...

if people are still driving around in Hummers. We have probably the cheapest gas in the world outside the Middle East. Europe has paid much more for many years, and what do they drive? Small, fuel efficient cars.

79. Bollocks
The people driving hummers can afford it. Most of us hard working (don't go there) people
that need to drive are getting hammered. The cost of transporting goods is going to eat our lunch real soon too.

No, we do not need gas to be higher prices than it is now. It needs to go back down and the
Democrat that wins in November will need to get it back down.

Dumbest post ever.

I am the farthest thing from a so-called 'elitist' that you can find, but I can still fill the tank on my Suburban.

Kinda hard to get to work with all my stuff without it.

Work.

Blue-collar type work.

Truck driving kind of work.

Don't meet too many of those 'elitists' out here on the road, though, we're all scratching and clawing just trying to earn enough money to stay in business.

And compared to spending $1480.00 to fill up my tanks with diesel every third day, putting in $120 of gas once a month in my 11 year-old Suburban is a screaming bargain.

44. It's funny how all of us who drive "big" vehicles get lumped into the same class
I drive a new Toyota pickup which admittedly doesn't get stellar gas mileage, but it's a necessity where I live and the work that I do aside from a day job.

You see, I try to drive my wifes car when I can to my office - its a Camry Hybrid and gets excellent gas mileage. But with her being a working professional as well, it's not always feasible. So I have to drive pickup to the office for the 15 mile journey. I have to drive a pickup because we also farm on the side - organic, natural farming - cattle, corn, and other assorted vegetables. It would be tough to get anything done on the farm with a Prius or even my wife's Camry.

But for some people, they just assume that since I drive a pickup that I must be some kind of knuckle-dragging Republican and get a kick out of how much it costs for me to fill-up. I assume if they want to keep buying their all-natural foods at the local or chain natural foods market, they had better get off of their high horse and stop assuming things that they have no clue about.

I'm one of those uneducated, smelly, dirty, ignorant mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging evuuuul truckers everyone loves to hate.

But if all of us sat home for say, just ten days, the economy of this nation wouldn't grind to a halt.

It would come to a dead stop, instantly.

But it's always nice to be painted with a broad brush. You can almost see the 'smug'.

That's how you win over people.

You know, the people that disagree with you.

The ones whose votes Obama would dearly love to have.

54. Your brother ever yell at a Vette driver filling his tank?
What about a Mustang GT, or Mazda RX-8? Or any high performance two-seat sports car or sedan? Beemers get crappy mileage, so do the high-end Mercedes.

Many of those not only get crappy mileage, and have a lousy passenger-mile to fuel economy ratio because of limited seatig capacity.

Why limit himself to SUV's? There are lots of strangers driving all kinds of vehicles that have poor fuel economy to yell at.

And, at the time, my Suburban was probably the largest passenger vehicle GM made, leather interior, the works, so, yeah, it probably compares to the Escalade.

But if a stranger tells to me to go fuck myself, he better take two steps back first.

To publicly insult strangers.

That is NO WAY to win people over to our side; it only makes them dig in their heels.

Look at the obverse side of this, the guy in the SUV is telling his friends, family, and co-workers that some lefty commie creep told him to go fuck himself, while he was minding his own business.

He might be a thoughtful guy, ready to change sides, re-thinking his political position, and something like this happens.

60. The point of the damned story was that the guy still had a W
sticker, and that he had W to thank for the gas prices. I didn't really think it mattered to the story what kind of fucking SUV he was driving. Apparently, I was mistaken.

How many blue-collar people who need their gasguzzlers for work drive around with a W sticker on the back of the vehicle? It was more a point of who the guy voted for, and what he got for his vote than about why he needed his fucking Cadillac.

58. I, for one, appreciate all that you do
I can appreciate the work that you do. I also know that you get very little recognition for the time and hard work that goes into keeping our economy functioning and providing everyone with their necessities and even "whims".

I spent 6 years in college and came out with two degrees, but I still farm on the side because its something that's been in my family for generations. It isn't a great source of income and sometimes you operate at a loss, but it's rewarding in its own way and provides an abundance of healthy foods to our region.

I get a few looks on occasion from others when they see my Obama sticker on my truck, but more often than not, I get a lot of good feedback and a few "that's my guy too" from other pickup driving people around town, at the co-op, or at the stockyard. So word of warning to those who like to paint with broad strokes - be careful who you want to judge with your smug sense of superiority. A lot of these people are first time Democratic voters or people who haven't voted in a long while.

He SLAMMED a BUSHBOT and his W sticker. Jeez. Defensive much?

RV, whose dad and brother drove/drive trucks FOREVER and knows about hauling shit (logging business as well as a wrecker service too) so don't jump on my ass about my 'elitist' ways. W. WWWWWWWWW sticker was the point of this OP.

My business depends on truckers just like you, and I raise a glass to you guys. Everyone loves to slam the truckers. But if they stayed home, we would be in a *real* bad way. Stuff has to get moved around.

47. Whatever.
My brother is actually quite compassionate toward the poor. Works with AIDS hospice, works with emotionally disturbed children who have been taken from their homes by Social Services, etc.

Way to judge a whole person by one story when you weren't there, and don't know him.

Have a nice day.

50. Funny, I had a similar exchange with a conservative friend recently:
He was bragging about his new Lincoln Navagator, and saying how it probably wasn't the best choice of gas mileage, but he didn't care... I told him that next time I see him filling up at the gas station, I'll wave as I drive by in my Prius. He told me he'd wave back - with one finger.

52. In Europe, Ford sells cars that do 50 mpg on the highway
Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 08:06 AM by Apollo11
Like this European Ford Fusion (not to be confused with the US Ford Fusion)

This car is smaller than you think. Only 161 inches long from bumper to bumper.

The most economical engine is the 90 HP common-rail diesel with manual transmission.

But then again, in Europe diesel costs as much as $8.50 per gallon. Gasoline $9.30 (with tax).

Read all about it: www.ford.co.uk/ie/fusion

Every damned time I have a conversation with a W voter who drives their big ass SUV to their "sit on their butt in front of a computer job" about gas, and they bring up the "supply and demand" bullshit, I ask them, "And, why the hell is demand so high? Could it be because of assholes like you that think you deserve to use more gas than you need?"

Still, I had to drive 200 miles yesterday, and it only used half a tank. That's not too bad. Personally, I think SUV's are useless unless you have to haul a lot of stuff or a lot of people.

Them: How's the mileage?

Me: 28-35, depending on the time of year.

Them: Oh. That's a lot higher than me.

Me: Yep. I had to save up longer, but it's been more than worth it.
