157. I know you're saying you see no color but you said in your title
that he's the first AA nominee and you're right. It's ok to see race, everyone does. What's not ok is discrimination, prejudice. And I don't see any here, so it's ok to celebrate both the historical fact and the fact that he's so incredibly awesome!

179. Welcome to DU! A VERY nice night for all of us, after a horribly long time wandering
in the wilderness in the freezing cold.

We made history tonight. DEMOCRATS made history tonight.

Which party put a woman on the ticket first? The Democrats - with Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro.

Which party brought us the first female Speaker of the House? The Democrats, with Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco.

Which party do ALL the African-Americans in Congress belong to? The Democrats - all the members of the Congressional Black Caucus are Dems. JC Watts is long gone - he was the lone GOP'er. That's the best they can do.

And which party has elevated the first African-American as its nominee for President of the United States? THE DEMOCRATS, with Barack Obama!!!

Yea!

One of the thrills of this campaign is to see that there are millions of people who have judged him on "the content of his character."

I wish I could hug everyone here who is not African American but the tears are all over my keyboard right now.

It's hard to describe the feelings that I have, it's very emotional.

I think of how hard all the Obama supporters have worked on this board, many far harder than I have to see Obama be the nominee.

I never imagined in my life time that an African American would ever get this close to being the President of the United States.

Some people have said that all African Americans just voted for him because of his Race.

Just the opposite. The people that I know were strong Clinton supporters. I mean strong!
It just evolved that when we saw "the content of his character" most AA voters were drawn to him.

Funny, because he promised us NOTHING, absolutely no favors, no money under the table to vote for him, no legislation that would only benefit us.

That's why we love him so much ~ he wants everybody to be color blind.
That's what we want too.

When you are a minority, sometimes your dreams don't reach as high, no matter how much education or how many materials things that you achieve. You sometimes feel that you are still, "A Raisin In The Sun."

Today the sun is shining so brightly for me.

Thank you everyone who seeks to have a Color Blind world.

149. Me too grantcart
I love all the colors of the rainbow.

Barack Obama does too.

Sometimes I listen to the "MSM" talk about red states blue states and it makes me ill.
We need to see a VOTERS MAP with everyone mixed up.

Instead they talk about HC winning the Women's vote!
That makes me so angry because I AM A WOMAN who happens to be African American,
When they talk about the "Women's Vote" they aren't talking about me!!

How dare they not count me in those numbers... I am counted as African American only, I don't have a gender in the Red/Blue Map.

Grantcart, I want you to work your Numbers Magic Map during the General and figure out how Obama can win the vote of the PEOPLE. :)

I know that Obama has a vision of how he can win with the votes of everyone -- young, old, rich, poor,
N/S/E/W.

That is what my dream would be for the November election. :patriot:

181. Grant you have been one of the nicest Obama supporters on this board..
I have read many of your responses in the last few weeks and found them to be supportive of Obama without being rude to Clinton or her supporters. I went from Kucinich to voting for Edwards, and did not chose between Obama and Clinton until late April(health care issue is important to me and I found both candidates plans lacking but I can hope for a change in his plan :)). It is indeed our differences that make this such a "fun rock to live on". It also inspires us to strive for a better world not just for us, but future generations.

:toast: to President Obama.

chatter and goodwill out there towards Obama by a mulitude and mix of people was just unreal. Not one bad or snarky comment. Two people even gave me a high five, both white!!!

This is amazing and I'm glad I'm here to witness it. I'm grateful, I'm alive to see it happen, so many that worked hard for this moment in our history, are no longer here to see it..but we shall celebrate for them as well.

I have tears too. I have been color blind my whole life. When my youngest daughter dated her AA BF in junior high school, he was terrified to meet me. She told him, "My mother taught me that people should be judged on who they are not what color they were born." It was one of the proudest moments of my life.

I am so proud of my party. On to November!!

This has been a truly groundbreaking primary season, and I can't wait to see that African American man inaugurated next January, having received the majority of the votes in this mostly white nation! 132. As an older tough non standard kind of white woman
this moment has brought me to tears and with a big smile on the side for the hope I feel right now.

I just almost have no words to express what I am feeling. You are correct about what has impressed me about this young man, from the start when I had no clue who he was, to what I watched as he grew into this role of nominee. It was about character, a candidate that at times in my own personal life has caused me to reflect "well, this situation I am facing stinks. How would a smart and gracious guy like Obama, who I know would recognize the injustice in what I see and be just as angry, handle this better than what I've come up with?"

What a gift to be able to inspire people to be just a little better, just a bit more even handed about things. It is a quality I just haven't seen in a presidental candidate in my lifetime, how about that? And what he will say to the entire world about not where America is at right now, so much as where we hope to go with every citizen participating without regard to color. An America where we can all be the color we were born (or like me, the color I was born without!) and let it be something that we are happy about and damned proud of being, not something that targets us or makes life hard and unjust in one way or another.

I am proud of this young AA man who is wiser than his years, grateful that he ran for office, and I hope to stick around long enough that someday as an ancient woman, I can still think back to what this felt like, and smile even more about what has come to pass by then.

Special congrats to you on this moment - it is so very big.

77. It makes me feel
that all things are possible for everyone of every Race/Creed/Gender if there can be a President of the United States named Obama with a funny middle name.

And why should we care how "funny" his name is?

Who some want to think is Muslim and he is not.
And why should we care?

Who had a White Mother.
And why should be care?

Who had a father from Africa.
And why should we care?

Who had a minister that screamed and said "crazy" things.
And why should we care?

Who "misspoke" and said there were 57 states when we know he knows the real answer.
And why should we care?

He CARES DEEPLY about each one of us and he is a TEACHER that wants the best for each of his students.
He has worked night and day for this nomination and for our children to dream that all things are possible.
That we should care about ~ that is important!

when we let freedom ring.;; all of gods children black men and white men, Jews and gentiles, protestants and catholics will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old negro spiritual free at last free at last, thank god almighty we're free at last.

I have MLKs I have a dream and Vietnam war speeches on my computer and on CD. The man brings tears to my eyes and I was born in 1979. His dream was so basic, such a basic dream for an American. When will we all be able to join hands and sing free at last?????

What, a man is dreaming of unity, peace, a post-racial USA????? Mr. Obama you say...???? Will he cash the check? Will the promisory note be honored???? Are the funds insuficient? The risk he is taking, risking a bullet from a racist... what a man. He puts his people, the American people, ahead of himself......wow....

I have supported Obama since the day Edwards dropped out, having supported Kucinich first.

83. Long time coming. Freedom rings in the name of hope today. Millions more worldwide.
I am crying/laughing reading this, because I am so happy for all of us. This is a big step towards demonstrated equality from the top down. Leading by example, Barack Obama will inspire millions of children of all races, but certainly for those who share his heritage.

I'm of a mixed heritage myself, a family of Irish-Appalachian-Indian ancestry. My daughter is bi-racial just like Barack. She is 10 and Oh so amazing. On the verge of life in every way.

Same could be said for our nation. It is on the brink of making history bend towards justice! This is what we have been talking about and working for the decades. Truly, I have waited for this hour.

My baby girl made a photo of the Obama Family, put it in a 3X5 frame, placed it amongst all of our family photos. They've become honorary members of our family. We are tremendously proud and excited today, and for tomorrow. We had to dance. We will throw a party in Nov. and Jan. Yes, we will.

Long live the people who contribute and invest in the posterity of perfecting the imperfect United States of America. I hope 08!:patriot:

Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 04:03 PM by Heather MC
So black and whites can have a piece of him
he was raised on the Islands so
all the Island people can claim him
He is a wonderful family man
so all the happily married men and women can claim him
He is a great father so all the parents can claim him
Oh and all the unhappily married people who have been praying for a happier marriage can claim him
He is FINE so all the ladies and gays can claim him
He has great teeth so all the dentist can claim him
He is tall
plays ball
speaks well
I bet he smells good
And most importantly, HE WOULD NOT HAVE SENT 4085 SOLDIERS TO DIE BASED ON A LIE
Anyone who agrees with that can claim and vote for him too!!

91. Yes, but bi-racial includes the identified heritage such as African/Irish.
My daughter is bi-racially African/Indian with some Irish thrown in. Dreams of my Father goes into the national cultural shift that will come from embracing our mixed heritage, but celebrate the victories of those people who have had to overcome suffering from inequality and injustice, to rise up into action for advancement. Very progressive!

I agree with you here:
And most importantly, HE WOULD NOT HAVE SENT 4085 SOLDIERS TO DIE BASED ON A LIEText

Looks like our families share much in common, and I celebrate right along with you. Our kids can directly identify with the POTUS. That has never happened before and it is something that we have struggled with in our own lives. Positive roll models to inspire us and lead the future generations. No matter who we are, or where we come from. Human potential is awesome.

164. I'm much more glad
To see a biracial president than a black one. Not because I think that neither ones are the victims of racism, but simply that the extreme hate that some people turn toward biracial children is much less reported in the media and much more ignored than racism against a person of one race.

A nurse told my aunt that she had to pick "either white or black" at the hospital for her baby. That is just ridiculous. And even worse, it was a black nurse. I think it really says something much more that we are about to have a biracial pres. than merely a black one, considering a biracial pres faces racism from both races.

180. I would be just as much glad if Barack was black as night. It's his character I am voting for.
I just mentioned it because of my bi-racial daughter is able to identify with Barack in that aspect. I know way too many people of all kinds face prejudice and inequality for no valid reason.

I get what you are saying about being hit with racism from both sides. Barack is uniquely qualified to speak out and help us heal these long standing divides so that our nation can move toward demonstrated equality. Regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, class, creed, or non-creed.

Yes, it is true in many States they do not allow births to be recorded as bi-racial. I think there are some States that do allow it now. It is ridiculous, no matter what color the nurse was. I'm sure she was just doing her job. That law should change for sure.

In my lifetime.. I am privileged to see this.
The healing this will give to our scarred history is incredible.

I am so proud to have voted for him.

When I look at the faces of the people attending his rallies and speeches,
they are transformed by hope.

Oh, make fun of it all you want,
but there has never been a presidential candidate in the past century
to do this for this nation.

NO matter what happens, the moment is now.
It's for all of us, and it reveals that we have come such a long way.

Congratulations and blessings to you and your family, SEnator Obama.

89. I am a very proud and happy American today
Some of you may know me as a Morrissey freak. Read these lyrics from "America Is Not The World." I'm hoping that America will have something to say to him in November!

America your head's too big, Because America, Your belly's too big
And I love you, I just wish you'd stay where you is
In America, The land of the free, they said, And of opportunity, In a just and a truthful way
But where the president, Is never black, female or gay, And until that day
You've got nothing to say to me, To help me believe
In America, It brought you the hamburger, Well America you know where, You can shove your hamburger
And don't you wonder, Why in Estonia they say, Hey you, Big fat pig
You fat pig, You fat pig
Steely Blue eyes with no love in them, Scan The World,
And a humourless smile, With no warmth within, Greets the world
And I, I have got nothing, To offer you
No-no-no-no-no
Just this heart deep and true, Which you say you don't need
See with your eyes, Touch with your hands, please, Hear through your ears, Know in your soul, please
For haven't you me with you now?
And I love you, I love you, I love you, And I love you, I love you, I love you

96. Pardon me for getting deep for just a second,
But I truly wish my grandfather was alive to see this. My grandfather had a brother lynched in Florida when he was a child. After they killed him, they went and found my great-grandmother and told her that they'd killed her son because "no n*gger should be that pretty."

My grandad was a 21 years old when he graduated from high school because when he was growing up, black kids could only go to school 3 months out of the year. The rest of the time, they had to work in the fields. He not only finished high school anyway, he joined the army afterwards and then went on to graduate from COLLEGE. Morehouse College in Atlanta to be exact. He was 36 when he graduated, but he graduated nonetheless. And even with his college degree and his service to our country, he was still only allowed to hold certain jobs at certain places and only allowed to go so far within those jobs.

As far as I was concerned, the sun didn't shine until that man woke up in the mornings. He died in 2003. If you had told him that there would be a black man who could possibly be president of this country, he would have looked at you like you'd lost your mind. I sincerely regret that he is not here to see this. So many times, I've wondered what he'd have to say about this election.

I am very, very proud of Obama.

stories like this illustrate what the "slavery is over get over it" crowd doesn't get:

our scars are still fresh; these things happened RECENTLY, as far as the history of mankind is concerned-

and if we still feel some growing pains, and we can't "get over it" fast enough for u, then please go fuck yourself-

excuse my french (u speak french, right?)

97. Why do you see no color? Obama is an African American man
Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 04:35 PM by Gman
to "see no color" is to deny this. White people full of guilt and trying to overcompensate often say that. In fact for a white person to say they "see no color" is to demean the AA person you are talking to as if to say, "You're not anything to me." YOu may be white, Obama is Black, someone else is something else.

Obama is likely to be the nominee and who just so happens to be an African-American.

Don't treat people of color that way. Obama isn't ashamed to be Black. You shouldn't be ashamed to see that he is Black.

Jeez, why do I have to teach these Obama surrogates these things?

I've grew up hearing people say..."Its never going to be a black president in our lifetime.." (i'm a 24 y/o black male for the record) and its incredible that we together as a nation could witness history. To see so many people come together and support someone who just a year ago was told.."America isn't ready for your kind..." get this close is just blowing my mind.

I'm probably making no sense whatsoever...but i'm just too excited. :)

133. As A White Guy from a Pennsylvania Blue Collar Family, I Am Having
a Peak Experience with the prospect of having a Black person about to become the presumptive candidate of the political party that I have been part of all my adult life. I am old enough to remember John Kennedy being elected - as an Irish-Catholic that was huge in our neighborhood. For the history of this nation this is Bigger! If Hilary, or any woman were in the same position, it would be Bigger than Kennedy. This is bigger than Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics, Bigger than Jackie Robinson, Bigger than Thergood Marshall on the Supreme Court. But, Barack Obama, as he has said, stand on the shoulders of all who came before him - who resisted and fought and died against the evil treatment of black people enslaved and impoverished in the United States of America, the segregated neighborhoods, miserable housing conditions, separate schools, and purposely limited access to the ladders of success - jobs, lending, medical care on and on. Black people have been treated so miserably in this country (and many other countries)that for any Black American to rise above, not accept it, not internalize the racism totally, to say, "I am a person equal to all others - I matter, I deserve as a human being to be treated with dignity and respect." To have the audacity to say, Yes, I too can be President - then go out and boldly without apology do the grinding work to make it happen, rallying many people of all backgrounds with his words and organizational abilities - gives me goose bumps. I love that Chris Matthews and his guests are speaking to this. I saw the tears in his eyes trying to express his sentiment and get the network to focus on this momentous event in our history as a nation, rather than focusing on what Hilary is doing or not. This is Chris at his best, showing our better angels! I will cry tonight, or whenever Barack Obama declares his claim on the Nomination for the Democratic Party for President of the United States of America!

135. I can't understand the racism in here!
I don't get it. Shouldn't we be happy that a person who was consistantly right on the Iraq war won the nomination and we have a great chance of bringing all of our troops home from around the world? All of this "I'm so happy an African American won" makes me cringe to my core. We are supposed to be color blind. On this day of MLK's speech we still haven't learned. His dream wasn't "I dream a black man can become president". It was that we are judged on the content of our charecter not the color of our skin. Let's be glad a person of charecter won.

Peace.

162. Not Racism to Address Race! It is Racist to mistreat people as
let than human, or less than other people because of their race. Republicans like to say that is it racist to refer to another person's race. Yes, it more important to vote for the candidates with the best policies - stop the war, end corporate welfare, move the country to a green society not dependent on oil, provide health care for all, etc. AND, it is historical, given the history of the USA that a Black person, or as I said, it would be, and is fantastically historical and wonderful that a woman almost got the nomination. I am proud to be a life-long Democrat, because we have since the days of the 1920's - 1930's (but not so much before that) fought for the rights of working people for women to get to vote, the the 40 hours workweek, for Social Security, and eventually for the rights of black Americans in the '50's and 60's and for environmental justice and green energy, etc. We see it and we fight for it, including all of the Democratic candidates - some better than others. But, how wonderful and inspiring it is that the Democrats have ad the courage to stand behind a woman with over 17 million votes and a black man with over 17 million votes in a primary election season! Martin Luther King never meant to ignore who a person is, what their color may be! What he so eloquently and bravely spoke for was that we can walk hand in hand as equals respecting who we are as a person and as a people. Chris Matthews read the commentary from Bishop Desmond Tutu, the black minister who fought along side Nelson Mandela to free the people of South Africa from the racist apparthied system that dehumanized the vast majority black population as well as the whites who enforced it. Bishop Tutu acknowledged with amazement how it could be that of all the majority white nations on earth, the United States of America's democratic voters have gotten behind a black person to be nominated as President. He surmissed that only in America can that occur right now. What hope this historical event brings to people around the world who look to the US for inspiration and leadership. After the last seven years, the US needs to be seen for the people we really are, as exemplified by what we fight for as Democrats.

Peace to all.

I was a Kucinich supporter, and differ on some issues (I more strongly oppose the death penalty, for example: I'm indifferent to whether they deserve it or not but am against for moral and other reasons, and I REALLY want single payer health care) but Obama should be pretty liberal as President.

And this milestone is a very nice thing! Either way we would have had a nice milestone.

I remember hearing the stories about the freedom riders being beaten in the south. The three young kids murdered for helping blacks. All the deaths, lynchings..the little girls blown up at church, Medgar Evers shot down in his driveway. MLK at the hotel.

So many terrible things, so much racial hatred. I never thought I'd live to see the day a black American would win the nomination of a major political party. And it just happened!

Now I hope I live to see the day that Obama takes the oath of office and becomes the next President of the United States!

Maybe there is a little more hope in this world tonight. Maybe, just maybe we can leave the past behind and look towards the future. I hope so.:)

185. Why? It should be a big story because of what he plans to do.
Geez.

199. Why does your response not surprise me?
Why am I not surprised to see a few negative comments from Hillary fans in here? Can you just not help yourself?

Throughout the entire campaign, we've been told how great it is that we finally have a strong female contender, and most Hillary fans were ecstatic about the possibility of a female president. And I do not fault them for that. So why is it wrong for Obama supporters to be excited about the possibility of an African-American president?

186. I think his nomination is HUGE, regardless of color, frankly.
what his nomination represents is the success of grass roots organizing over fatcat corporation funding.

191. A "Washington Outsider" (relatively) who has an uncanny political savvy
His Presidency will be remarkable in more ways than one, that's for sure.

196. I have mixed feelings on the importance of his being the 1st..

I'm a white female who fully believes in the need for reparations and affirmative action....however..

I think it really shows alot that the people of this country are moving ahead in race relations..... I think that the central message of the Civil Rights Movement was that African Americans and people of other races should stand equal and be judged on their deeds and character.... I struggle with affirmative action plans because I do believe African Americans do need a leg up to catch up when they have been kept down for centuries.

I am finally glad that we have a candidate that does not engage in ad hominem negative campaigns ... but engages in a campaign of progress and hope...

I think this whole first woman or first African American viable candidate thing has gotten people to lose sight of what is important. I think Hillary was not the right candidate because of her campaign and her experience, when a viable woman becomes a candidate again, I would like for her to win on her own merits not that she is a woman.

it is historic in the sense that we are moving forward but the real progress should be what Obama and a Democratic Controlled Congress can accomplish.
