Check in here if you are 100% behind Barack Obama no matter who he picks for VP!
The Clinton supporters who say they won't vote for Obama bug me, but what is even more mind-boggling to me is the Obama supporters who say they won't vote for him if he picks Clinton as his VP. Folks, we are a few hours away from getting our FIRST CHOICE AT THE TOP OF THE TICKET. Okay, I know he wasn't everyone's first choice...I know a lot of you started out supporting Kucinich, then Edwards, then Obama, or some other evolution. Maybe I am biased here because Obama was my first choice. But I am so excited that he is going to be the nominee and I can't believe anyone else who has supported him would consider not voting for him if he picks Clinton for VP. I have mixed feelings about whether or not he should...to me, it all comes down to quantifying her base of hard-core supporters. The people I met at the DNC meeting Saturday were certainly vocal, but they were no more than 1,000 people. The question is whether or not they speak for millions of people or are just a small but vocal group. Does the need to appease them outweigh the negatives she brings to the ticket? Can Obama trust her?

Those are questions that his campaign needs to ask and resolve, but at the end of the day, I'm going to be just as excited about getting to vote for Obama in November no matter who he picks for VP (within reason, obviously). If he decides that party unity can only be achieved by putting Clinton on the ticket then so be it...he's got my vote, my energy, my money, and my commitment to getting him elected no matter who he picks for VP. So who's with me?

I don't hate anybody. Nobody's wallowing here. Not everyone thinks like you do and some people are more conciliatory than others.

PS. If the shoe were on the other foot, I would also expect Hillary to choose Barack.

I pledge to contribute a dime and an ounce to cover the loss from papau ... along with the dollars and pounds I will contribute for myself if Obama chooses ANYBODY but Hillary. C'mon! She won't even congratulate him on his win and endorse his candidacy against McBush. She continues to try to destroy the party's chances in November for her own personal ambitions.

323. That is why Obama will not go there. He has this whole thing figured out.
He has been ten steps ahead of all the other campaigns and pundits throughout this whole thing. This is one savvy dude, people. He will find a way to let Hillary save face, make her supporters feel good about supporting him and get a VP that can really help support his message of honest, sweeping change without bring any baggage to the ticket.

I'm not sure how he will do all of that, but he will. He is the man.

354. I essentially feel the same way. The words I am using are "courtly and well mannered" --
although they are certain antique words about a society, even a monarchy, that does not exist much anymore. I like the way he dealt with her last evening.

They both gave wonderful speeches at the AIPAC meeting today (television). It is clear that Senator Clinton spoke in a few more specifics, but Obama, as always, wins the Best Orator award.

379. He can afford to be "Courtly"
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 01:35 PM by MindMatter
He has the votes. However, I believe it is fundamentally his nature to be well-mannered and win through persuasion and positive vibes.

Nonetheless, it helps when the Superdelegates are delivering such a clear-cut message. Basically this avalanche of SDs is a completely unambiguous message to Hillary. "Just stop. We don't want Barack to negotiate a typical political deal with you. We want to give him the space to run HIS campaign and really push for true change. That is how we will revitalize the Democratic grass roots in 50 states."

I don't know how a person can be so dense as to not get this message. But if Hillary insists, Obama will get another 120 of the undecided SDs and another 25 of Hillary's will switch to Obama. I just don't understand why she is making everybody go through this little dance.

But I will have far less enthusiasm for the process. His campaign will have signaled that it is about politics as usual after all.
Obama will have appeared to have lost control of his candidacy by letting the Clintons pick his vice-president.

The Clintons will continue to make it all about them. The Republicans will bring up more embarrassing information about
both the Clintons making the race about them as well. All of her surrogates will be lurking on the TV.

And governing with the Clinton dramas in the Whitehouse will be extremely difficult.

Yes I will vote for this ticket if it happens but with far less joy and much more concern.

35. politics is full of disappointments. If he does select Hillary, I am sure this will not be the most
disappointing thing he ever does. The same would be true of ANY OTHER politician. Once he becomes President, I am sure he will have other decisions that are FAR more disappointing. The same would be true of ANYONE else who became President

This is REAL politics in the REAL world.

AS far as winning is concerned, there are arguments both for and against the strategic advantage of Hillary on the ticket. Nonpartisan and dispassionate analysis on this matter are about evenly split.

41. I would vote for him. He can keep her in the old office building
I am sure that the VP used to have an office in that building next to the WH. I think it is called the Executive Office building. I seem to re-call that Bill moved Gore into the WH. Frankly I think the newness of Obama does not go with the oldness of Clinton. I just want the Clinton/Bush group to be gone.

In addition to winning (which frankly, I think her candidacy hurts more than helps), this man has to govern with her as VP and that would be a total disaster.

But I live with 3 strong Hillary supporters who would defect if she wasn't on the ticket. I trust Obama's judgement, and I know that he choose a VP based on whats best for the country. A combined ticket will rile up some fundies, but it also goes a long way towards unity...and theres a lot of positive ways to spin that.

Although I might not agree with a certain choice of VP, I will fully support his decision and judgement. Obama has proven time and time again that he can surprise us and exceed all expectations. It may be that he can form a powerful, sincere alliance with Clinton and pull off the so-called Dream Ticket.

228. I don't understand people buying into the "inexperience" meme
you had a Bush for over seven years-who it seems had very little experience--the Governor of Texas has less authority than some other states, oh except who they decide to kill-they get to appoint, I believe, two departments-labor and housing. So, how many blathering heads on the boob tube emphasized *'s experience, especially in foreign policy? As I understand, they were more worried if he was a "down home, aw-shucks boy" that you would just love to have a beer with. Of course, how many knew he could be an obnoxious drunk? Now, everyone is worried about experience--here, let me have a good laugh!!!!

Okay, done with rant--I'm voting the Big O and whoever he choses for VP--okay, maybe not with Darth Cheney, K. Rove, Rice, Vlad the Impaler, Sauron, Hannity, O'Lielly or Limpballs.:hi:

155. What would Molly say?
Molly Ivins would probably be busy at this very moment putting the final touches on her latest column.

"Why I will not support Hillary Clinton for vice-president."

Hillary Clinton knew better than to claim Molly Ivins would have endorsed her. But she did claim Ann Richards would have.

I suspect both Molly and Ann would have written in Kinky Friedman rather than vote for her. For president. Or vice-president.

Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 08:28 PM by bertman
Lies, inuendo, trying to change the rules. Saying one thing then turning around and doing the exact opposite. She has exemplified the virtues of George W. Bush.

No frickin way I want her one heartbeat away from the Presidency. She has shown her true colors. She's a win-at-any-cost corporate power monger.

American needs NEW, OPEN LEADERSHIP not more of the Bushit we've been experiencing for going on eight, long years.

I have supported Obama with money and volunteering, but I will not vote for him if he selects her. That would totally trash the spirit of CHANGE and HOPE he has inspired in me.

And, last but not least, it would be the ultimate sign that he is a closet corporatist and not an agent of change.

201. Well, that's politics
She wanted to win and gave it her best shot. I personally would hope for another VP choice. HOWEVER, sitting on the sidelines and watching McCain win would be a tragedy of historic proportions. The Ralph Nader all-or-none mentality has gotten us nowhere except to get Bush within striking distance of successfully stealing the 2000 election. I would hope that most of us have learned that lesson by now. Obama and Clinton are close enough on the major issues (the war, health care) to be compatible, and if Obama chooses Hillary, he still retains my wholehearted support.

My worst fear if he picks Hillary is that the Repugs will claim the young President is being controlled by a Machiavellian power behind the throne. And they would know how that could work, since Darth Cheney has had that role for the last eight years.

Here is an excellent reason to have Hillary Clinton as VP - think of all the powers that Cheney has invested in the office of VP. Now think of the Repugs' reaction if Hillary will be the one to inherit those powers. I'm just saying - it would be a delicious irony.

It's really Obama's choice, and having Hillary Clinton on the ticket would not diminish my support one iota. We can't afford to take our eye off the ball this time, and that means ensuring that come January we witness President Barack Obama sworn in addition to electing an effective Democratic majority to Congress with which to undo the shameful record of the past 8 years. A "pass" would be a misguided vote for Bush III, something I certainly would not want on my conscience!

223. From "Change" to "More of the Same?"
He ran on Change...basically saying "I can bring change; Clinton is more of the same - voted for the war, part of the old politics, etc."

So how could he then pick her as VP? It would be seen as 'politics as usual' - pick your VP candidate based on getting votes, not on character or the issues.

Plus it's rewarding the behavior of her campaign after he 'stole' the nomination from them.

Cabinet post? Maybe. But not the heir apparent.

I think Clinton would be a strategic error for the GE, but clearly his strategic vision for the elections thus far proves that he needs no second-guessing in that department. If he picks Clinton, I'll trust that he knows what he is doing.

Past the election? VP performs traditional VP roles, not a Cheney-style eminence grise, so who the VP is doesn't much matter to me. I would think Clinton would prefer to develop her power and status in the Senate to that, but perhaps not.

I think Obama is all right, but he seems to me to be a rock star candidate, with too little experience to do the job - a nice guy, but not quite ready yet. America does love her American Idols. I started out with Kucinich, then Edwards, while keeping a half a hope that Gore would run. Then I moved to Hillary, and I still like her. But it's time to do everything we can to get the Republicans out, so I'm going to find an Obama bumper sticker to sit beside my Worst. President. Ever. sticker. It's time to move on.

I had stated that I would reluctantly vote for Clinton if she were the nominee.

The compelling logic is that I will also vote for Obama if Hillary Clinton is the Vice-presidential nominee.

I'll go better than that. I respect Obama enough that I won't try to influence his choice. He can better weigh the options without supporters like me jumping up and down on the scales trying to influence him one way or another.

271. To say my peace.....
I don't post a lot on this forum. I read a lot and love hearing the opinions of other people here. This is something that is very important to me that I need to say.

I don't care who Obama takes as a VP. I don't. As a matter of fact, I couldn't CARE LESS who he takes as a VP as long as it isn't someone as bad as John McCain. I will be honest with you, if McCain wins...I am moving to Canada. I am 100% serious about that. If John McCain wins this next election then everything I stand for as a human being will be turned on it's end. That man will prove that this country has sold it's soul to the GOP and we have learned NOTHING. Not a damn thing.

I have been an Obama voter from day 1, but even if Hillary had won...I would have swallowed my pride and followed her. Why? Because NO ONE is worse for the job than McCain. NO ONE. And NO ONE would be worse for our country than John 'Moneybags' McCain.

And you could say "yeah, it's easy to say that...Obama won." Yeah...but this is something I decided a long time ago. I will not allow our country to go through more of this senseless war, having our rights taken away from us.... I mean...think about it. do you really want to lose the right to chose? or how about even more of our privacy?

Think about it.

I trust his judgment entirely, and will be behind him 100%.

But I hope that he doesn't choose Hillary. Hillary would be good only for getting the democrats back together and insuring a win against the republicans. But after the race, then what? I don't trust Hillary. And I don't want to gamble it.

But if Obama sees something that I don't see then, I'm all for it.

I hope that Obama doesn't succumb to peer pressure and choose Hillary as his VP.

290. Al Gore reprise? ;-)
I know it probably couldn't happen in a million years...but the more I think about it, the more it seems to make sense in every way but one. The VP role is the role of a policy surrogate; a specialist who practices in a few specific areas that fit within or enhance the administration (our present administration obviously notwithstanding). Wouldn't it be cool if Al Gore reprised his role as VP and led the environmental policy (among other things) for the Obama administration? Don't know about y'all, but that would really excite me. This is the one area where I still feel Obama is not speaking strongly enough. I want an Apollo moon-mission equivalent commitment to reforming our national energy policy, a hydro-electric superhighway from NY to LA within the next 10 years, a massive investment in new energy infrastructure and the complete abandonment of oil for personal transport...all of which could be done easily when you consider the money we have wasted "investing" in war. Al Gore could lead that effort as part of the Obama adminstration and claim the glory while serving his nation again.

sigh...but I know...it's ridiculous...because people would piss on Gore for moving sideways instead of moving up. That's the thing I hate most about politics...the peer pressure to always obtain more and more power.

I'm okay with Hillary as Secretary of Health and Human Services. But not VP...I think any Clinton presence in the White House would be a major distraction to Obama's administration. Not that I would vote against Obama, but I would be really shocked if he picked her.

294. I'll vote/support him no matter who his running mate, but I think it would be a HUGE mistake to pick
Hillary as his running mate. While it should be a cake walk to beat the Republicans after 8 years of Bush disaster, but I don't think the general election is going to be quite so easy. I think that McCain and the Republicans are going to pull out National Security and Terrorism and military experience as being the big issues and I think that the only weakness that Obama has is that he has no military experience, so therefore he needs a running mate who does. For this very reason I think that he needs to choose someone like Sen. Jim Webb, a former Marine, former Republican, former Sec. of the Navy and has a son fighting in Iraq...and he represents a southern state, something that wouldn't hurt his ticket either.

I think that he should make Hillary his first nominee for Supreme Court when he has the chance for an appointment....I think that the legacy that Hillary could leave and build as a Supreme would be far more than as POTUS.....

I think Obama would be making a HUGE mistake in choosing her....I hope he doesn't fall to the pressure that will be coming from the Clinton camp...

If that is Hillary, so be it. She might hurt him by being part of the old school Dem party leadership or may help him by bringing in the voters she got in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, etc. Too early to tell right now. I think Obama deserves some time to think about it and he should not be forced to pick her but I don't think its a horrible choice to pick her either.

307. Was a Senator Clinton supporter, The nominee WILL have my support.
Senator Obama, as our candidate will definitely have my support with or without Senator Clinton on his ticket, and I've been a Clinton supporter ever since DK dropped out. My main concern is that the next president have the ,D after their name. I just hope the Senator Obama camp is as right as they think they are about his electability now, because if he does loose the general to Bush3.0.. I'm gonna be one exceptionally unhappy camper.

Hell, now that I think about it.. to some extent I can't loose now..

If Senator Obama wins the presidency I can celebrate a great victory.

If he looses to Bush3.0, I'll be pissed to no end, but at least I'll have bragging rights here that Hillary should have been the candidate to take him on.

There are no bragging rights attached to hypothetical general election campaigns that never existed. There's no reason to assume Clinton would win victory either.

I know I'm going to be disappointed with him somewhere down the road....I still have a bit of a trust problem with him re: GLBT issues. But around here, that's irrelevant, so I guess that's some whining on my part.

But, be that as it may...I am completely, solidly, behind Barack Obama as the nominee.

SORRY.... I EXPECT THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, MR OBAMA, TO BE A BRIGHT MAN, THE MAN WE SAW ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL----

IF THE ONLY WAY HE CAN UNITE THE PARTY IS TO CAPITULATE.... THEN WHAT CAN WE EXPECT WHEN HE GOES TO TALK TO OUR ENEMIES ?

TIME FOR THE MAN TO STAND UP AND BE STRONG.... THE ONE THING HE SHOULD LEARN FROM HILLARY, HOW TO FIGHT!!!!!!

It is POSSIBLE he could make a VP pick so damn stupid I would lose faith in his judgement but pretty frickin' unlikely. It would have to be a "reach across the aisle to Inhofe or Coburn" type of idiocy.

Don't think that's too likely so pretty much 100%!

353. Michelle vs. Lady Di on dresses
Michelle will also be a great example for the women in America as a Help-Meet. Hillary stood by her man, and her biblical ground is what kept the two of the together and strong. But regardless of what some may say about Michelle's dressing, she represents class and sophistication, just as Lady Di did. Mold your girls at a young age to be debutants, to be marketable, to speak correctly and clearly. Teach your young men to be gentlemen, to not wear saggy clothing, to be resourceful, confident not cocky. Enroll children in debate team classes, chess, golf and science fairs and journalism, Toastmasters, mentor programs, etc. The Obama couple will need the children of the future to be ready to lead.

355. If you're willing to throw away your beliefs and ideology out of pure bitterness and spite,
then we can probably do without you, even if it means the election.

This was Hillary's election to loose and she did. Once her supporters step back and realize that, they will hopefully get mad at her for botching this, and not at Obama for not botching his.

Once it's over (for real, an actual concession), and once people have had a chance to cool off, all this "I'd rather vote for a Republican than for Obama" mania coming from democrats will die down (I'm still not convinced it exists outside of the worlds of CNN and Faux News peddle). One day, hopefully closer to now than to election day, McCain will do or say something stupid (this shouldn't be a campaign strategy, but it's bound to happen) and that person will all of a sudden realize that they have everything in common with Obama (who's positions are near lock-step with Clinton) and nothing in common with McCain.

361. I've been working against Hillary from the beginning
not because I have some sort of irrational hatred of Hillary (it's perfectly rational ;) ) but because I believe she is emblematic of the go-along to get-along attitude that has hurt democrats for the past 16 years and has earned us media consolidation, the war in Iraq and welfare reform (among other things).

I'm sorry I like Obama and everything. I think he will be quite a good president, but I didn't vote for Obama I voted against Hillary. Because she voted for the WAR. I will be quite disappointed if she is given the vice-presidential nod.
