Father Phleger Defrocked
Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 03:50 PM by sunnystarr
He's no longer a priest. All I can say is WOW that was fast! How will this impact any further Repug attacks in the GE?

UPDATE: David Shuster on MSNBC originally said Phleger was out of the priesthood and then a few minutes later revised his announcement to say that he was temporarily suspended.

Statement from Cardinal George
Cardinal George, keep Father Pfleger

June 3, 2008
Recommend (12)

The Rev. Michael Pfleger's work on the South Side of Chicago remains unfinished. It would be a shame if that work were cut short now because of his recent foolish words. His parish, his church and his city would be the poorer for it, less vibrant and less hopeful.

Cardinal Francis George is understandably furious with Pfleger, who was so wrong in every way when he mocked Sen. Hillary Clinton from a church pulpit two Sundays ago, all but labeling her a white supremacist. We urge the cardinal, all the same, not to retaliate by removing Pfleger from his beloved St. Sabina parish.

We know Pfleger gives the cardinal fits. He would give any boss fits. We also know that by the usual rules of the archdiocese, Pfleger should have been reassigned from St. Sabina a decade or more ago. The cardinal has been bending the rules for Pfleger for years.

But Pfleger is not the usual priest, and St. Sabina -- thanks to Pfleger -- is not the usual parish. They are, together, something so much better.

53. Thank you for that editorial. It speaks to all the good Father Pfleger has done.
Sounds like he has had his issues, one of which we saw displayed, but in the end he's done a lot of good work.

Still, I'm surprised by it.

Since you gave no link I have no idea what may have happened, except that he could have been relieved as pastor of his church by his bishop. But you cannot summarily "defrock" a priest.

26. Temporarily relieved of pastoral duties. Not defrocked.
From the Chicage Sun-Times:

The firebrand pastor of St. Sabina parish was effectively removed from his duties there Tuesday, according to a statement released by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

In the statement, Cardinal Francis George says he asked the Rev. Michael Pfleger, 59, to "take leave for a couple of weeks from his pastoral duties." The statement said Pfleger "does not believe this to be the right step at this time." "While respecting his disagreement, I have nevertheless asked him to use this opportunity to reflect on his recent statements and actions in the light of the Church's regulations for all Catholic priests," George said.

All it would mean is that he is no longer the head man at his church. It has nothing to do with his status as an ordained priest.
