If McCain campaigned on a believable promise to work for the interests of most women and African Americans (fat chance), he'd get a majority of our vote. Even if he never says "women" or "African American" when speaking of our interests.

If he doesn't (and he won't), it won't matter if he adds so many tokens to his campaign that it sounds like a city bus when you shake it. Not even if he gets a sex change operation and promises to spend the rest of his life in blackface will he win the support of a majority of women and African Americans.

The media of course (as well as the Marc Penns of this world) fixate on identity. It ain't identity. It's whether I (and many others) can pay our bills, live in peace, and have the opportunity for human happiness.
