Barack Obama on the threshold of history

Barack Obama stands at the gateway of history as a black man preparing to carry his party’s standard into battle in November’s presidential election.

Tonight, he is expected to reach the “magic number” of delegates — 2,118 — and effectively clinch the Democratic nomination.

Hillary Clinton, his rival in an epic and often bitter struggle, was facing the end of her own historically charged effort to become America’s first woman president.

Early exit poll results from the two states suggested a split decision, with Mrs Clinton leading in South Dakota and Mr Obama on course for victory in Montana.
