The primary infighting on DU ends at 12 noon ET on Wednesday, June 11.
Now that it has become apparent that Senator Clinton will leave the presidential race, the primary infighting here on Democratic Underground will end at 12:00 noon ET on Wednesday, June 11. As http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Skinner/239">promised, this gives all of you seven days to prepare yourself for the end of the primary season, and the beginning of the general election:

We understand that not everyone will be prepared to immediately put the primaries behind us. There will be some jerks on the winning side who insist on gloating. And there will be some sore losers on the other side who will want to keep attacking the nominee. Once we have a presumptive nominee, those people will have one week to get it out of their systems. We believe that a one-week transitional period is more than fair for those of you who cannot switch gears easily or quickly. After this week-long adjustment period, we're done.

At that point, the moderators and admins will step in and shut down the primary infighting. The vast majority of people on this site will be glad to be done with the primaries. Sadly, a very small number of bitter partisans will not be able to let it go, and will likely be removed from this community. Few people will miss them when they are gone.

The General Discussion: Primaries forum will be re-named and re-purposed to host discussions about the upcoming presidential election between Senator Obama and Senator McCain.

DU Administrator

213. There may be valid reasons why not to choose Hillary as VP....
...but I don't think the hard-fought primary battle is one of them. If anything, I think it's made Obama a stronger candidate and we should thank her for that. What's Gramps going to throw at Obama that Hillary hasn't already?

Thanks to Hillary, Obama has been forged in fire. Whether having Hillary as his running mate is consistent with the overall message of Obama's campaign is, I think, a fair point of discussion, but nothing that's gone on in the primaries should be, in my opinion. Hillary did us all a favor, even if it didn't seem like it at the time.

93. Hey Skinner the race isn't over until the delegates pick
the winner, the VP, and the platform at the convention. Our primary has been manipulated now our convention.

You act like Obama is the goal of all in the party. He is not. He doesn't set the goals or the platform for the people. He is a leader not a king. This whole thing is like a truck hitting a wall of manipulation.

Now there aren't even going to be pre-primary parties for the various states. Don't tell me the DNC is broke.

Now they plan a huge party for EVERYONE for one reason...Katrina discussions, etc. This is not the place for that. 5,000 people in a big party. Ya hear the speeches don't give any of your own or your party goals.

It is to silence the delegates at the convention to make it just a pep rally. That is not democracy Skinner.

If someone is posting something that you consider to be "HRC propaganda", then by responding to it you will almost certainly be helping, not hindering them.

179. The delegates are picked in every state to represent their
constituents back home. They pick the final candidate for President and VP. They vote on the party platform for the election.

One man/woman does not decide everything for us. They are there to represent us and make sure it goes forward. That's democracy and representative government.

If you followed conventions from way back you'd know that. The DNC committee does not make any final decision since they are not elected by the people. The delegates rule and have the final say for us.

Not the Super Delegates. That is just plain wrong and they are not elected.

200. if you say so
Doesn't change the fact that members of the delegate body where chosen for their candidate loyalty. They rearley vote against the nominee on his VP choice.

Supers are stupid, no doubt about that, but thats the way it is now. Only about 20% of the delegates are supers and they voted with the pledged delegate winner.

If you honestly believe that there will be some kind of revolt in the delegates, super or otherwise, your grasping at straws.

208. the constitution has nothing to do with this
the party rules state that the delegates vote on both nominee and vp.
But delegates are choosen to ensure absolute loyality.
Thats why its common knowledge that the nom picks the vp. He is the nom because he has more delegates. They will follow his vp choice just like they have 99% of the time.

There will be no revolt.

He has tried to show no favoritism over the candidates.

The rules for the nomination, that both candidates agreed to, were well established, and once Obama had the lead in the delegates and the superdelegates, it was over.

I am happy that Hillary did not immediately concede - as we can expect dirty tricks in the November elections, and it will be nice that Obama can name Hillary's precedent-setting refusal to concede as partial basis for his not conceding when the Repugs try to play their stolen election games.

And hopefully the Repugs won't try those.

14. Goodbye Humor
Part of the fun these past few months has been seeing the steam come out of everyone's ears, and seeing their indignant reactions to unintended slights, and seeing all the fireworks and bickering. Everyone loves a good fight! :)

Now it's all going to be love and unity and universal agreement on all issues. In other words, boring. What the hell will there be to talk about for the next five months when everyone is on the same page?

A good producer knows that on a reality show, you have to build in conflict to draw viewers in. I'm going to miss the entertainment of primary season. :(

67. "Everyone loves a good fight"?
That's quite a generalization there. I'm fairly certain not much of anybody was enjoying "the fight" except of course for the trolls.
As for what we'll move on to discussing there'll be McSame's shenanigans, bloops, and blunders, Congressional investigations, the further crumbling of the conservative movement, general election strategy discussions, rapid dissemination of news the MSM won't touch, the upcoming political neutering of a certain Joementum when we make gains in the Senate sufficient to turn his now-important swing vote into just another repuke vote (a personal fave I look forward to with great anticipation)...among other things.

I think you'll like it just fine.

78. You know what I mean
On the Real World, for example, it was always more fun to watch combative contestants, i.e., those of different politicals views or racial views. In conflict lies drama (and comedy).

I'm not saying that future DU won't be informative or interesting. It just won't have the same bare-knuckles, knock-down, hissy-fit-throwing tantrums. And I do think that many posters enjoyed the in-fighting. Sparring with words is always fun.

Plus, I tend to be cynical towards politics and politicians. And I sometimes like playing Devils advocate, or just plain criticizing someone when they deserve it. So if I think Obama needs criticizing, or if I want to point out a weakness in a certain strategy, I now have to bite my tongue for fear of being uncivil.

Party in-fighting replaced with taking the fights to the appropriate party, i.e., the GOP.

"Now it's all going to be love and unity and universal agreement on all issues."
If you believe that, I'd love to make a gentleman's wager that you are simply wrong-- we'll continue to find other reasons to fight amongst ourselves.

"Everyone loves a good fight!"
If that fight is directed towards the appropriate target.

"A good producer knows that on a reality show..."
Realities shows (besides sucking) do not reflect nor represent the non-fictional lives we lead-- lives filled with enough struggles; adding more fighting simply for the sake of entertainment seems rather... selfish (at best).

60. Skinner ...will more clarification of what is allowed to be said be coming?
As a poster asked up above...will Hillary bashing be permitted if there is speculation about her as VP? We know the media is going to keep pushing that as the news. It might get confusing as to whether that will ignite the Hillary flame wars as bad as they were during the campaign.

Also...is criticism of any of Obama's "picks" allowed? Last night I posted criticism about one of his VEEP Search Team because he was associated with Fannie Mae (mortgage meltdown) and felt that having that person on the search team would cause problems for Obama in the Media. Will criticism of an Obama choice be allowed if we feel the person could cause Obama problems with the media? What kind of criticism is allowed?

82. Answer
I think criticism will always be allowed, provided it is offered in the spirit of helping Obama. It's pretty easy to tell if someone is a closet RW'er getting in digs versus someone with a legit concern. I don't think DU requres mindless adherence to all things Obama.

Then again, I've only been around since last July so what do I know?

62. Personally
I'm busy researching candidates to vote for at my district convention this weekend. I want to send delegates that are diverse and progressive, and who will stand for my particular favorite issues with strength.

Oddly, all of my personal goals were met this cycle. The Primary lasted long enough to be an actual event in Oregon. Large turn out here and across the nation. Senator Obama's lexicon and message has defined itself into something I can really support, after a strong start and a rocky middle. He went from the very skeevy McClurkin events to speaking the exact words I look for out of mainstream politicians in regards to LGBT issues. He's stopped using words that really set me off, and started using words I have longed to hear. He's even correctly connected GLBT rights with the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which is to me the very heart of the fight for equality. This candidate went from being off message in a way, to being very much on message, and I think that means the campaign had open ears, and the candidate actually sees himself as a person in process, a growing and changing individual, not a set and finished mind, but an evolving mind.

I hope everyone understands that the Obama candidacy as we saw it grow and prevail, would not have been possible without an extremely excellent rival. What we as a Party just did, that can not be done without at least two very excellent players. It is a luxery to have so much talent to chose from. May our nominee Senator Barack Obama of the Great State of Illinois, home of my Father, take from his strong rival Senator Hillary Clinton of the Great State of New York, oft my summer home and residence of my alter egos, one lesson more. May he fight for the win with the determination that is Hillary's strength. May he never backdown, never. If the General is close, knock on wood, may he fight the endgame just as she has the Primary endgame, not like Kerry did it in 2004. May he fight McCain like Clinton fought him.
I learned more from my strongest professional competition than from any other person on Earth. I thank the powers of the universe for letting me have such a person to both defeat and be defeated by in turns. My rival is my whetting stone, and helps me to be ready when the real dual is engaged. Without he who took half my gigs, I'd be half the professional I have been.

65. Can you please clarify some?
I don't remember exactly how it worked in 2004. I know we're not allowed to say we're not voting for Obama (I am voting for Obama so that's not an issue.) Is criticism of the candidate allowed? If so, at what point is criticism NOT allowed? I just want to understand the rules so I don't fall on the wrong side of them.

BTW, I've basically refrained from attacking Obama since it became clear after NC that he was the presumptive, so anyone who wants to reply to this and say I'm just trying to find a loophole to keep trolling can suck it. Thanks in advance.

75. IIRC, last time VALID questions about strategy are okeydokey
but slanderous attacks (think of swiftboating) are not.

so, for example, it was okay, if I recall, for me to post saying I think Kerry was wrong to not immediately address the swiftboaters (more of a strategy issue).
But if you joined in with the swiftboaters and started sliming Kerry, then no.

90. Cool, I'm done
As long as nothing changes and Hillary's concession/endorsement goes as it's supposed to I'm ready for what's next. (Though I'm still against her as VP).

I'm actually going to try to not be here much for a few days, let things (and myself) calm down a bit.

Look for threads about breast feeding in public, circumcision, or anything in the Gun Forum or Israel/Palestine Forum. :)

But, you'll see how fun this place can be when we turn our sights on the Repubs. :toast:

I won't miss the dishonesty though. That part I didn't like.

194. Re-directing the energy is what it is about.
We have all of this energy from the primary campaign. The energy that comes from seeing your dream coming true after years of struggle. The dream of peace and honor and it was being manifest in your candidate. Your champion. But there was another champion that manifest the same dream for your friends and neighbors and even family. One champion has triumphed but the other was not vanquished, because they both have the same dream as we do. If one takes one role and the other takes another, neither is lessened. Nor is the dream of those who worked so hard for lost. It takes many hands to raise a barn. We have all won this primary season and we will all need to continue to work our asses off, each according to their ability and passion. Our deadliest foe is now our best fighter. Did you know that Harold Ickies was almost beaten to death trying to register voters in the south? We share the same dreams we have the same goals. All the leader does is chose the path we will take to reach them.
