Gloria Steinem Supporting Obama
Posted by TOM BEVAN | E-Mail This | Permalink | Email Author
This is a fairly good sign for Obama, and one most people probably didn't see coming - at least not this quickly:

The feminist icon whose writings inspired thousands of American women to a passionate support of Hillary Clinton said yesterday she was not at all crushed by Hillary's loss and believes her race has "absolutely" been good for women. But she now not only supports Democratic nominee Barack Obama, she'll volunteer for him, too.
"I think she changed forever our understanding of the possibilities of leadership," Gloria Steinem said of Hillary in a Herald interview after a morning appearance here. "She showed such courage in the face of a media that was trying constantly to get her out of the race and all the misogyny . . . She put up with that with grace. She enlarged my vision."

Steinem also said she'd be happy in an America where Nancy Pelosi remains speaker of the House, Hillary runs the Senate and Barack Obama is president.

12. Gloria is a feminist icon
Here's the wikipedia entry:

Gloria Marie Steinem (born March 25, 1934) is an American feminist icon, journalist and women's rights advocate. She is the founder and original publisher of Ms. magazine, and was an influential co-convener of the National Women's Political Caucus.

I clicked on your profile to see if there was some indication of your age. Maybe Gloria Steinem is before your time but she was, and still is, a major guiding light of feminism.

Who's Hal Sparks?

25. Please,
do educate yourself. Gloria Steinem's influence in the sphere of women's rights and the feminist movement cannot be overstated. I am saddened if you are truly unaware of her stature and historical significance. Senator Clinton stands on her shoulders, make no mistake.

like the DFL gal here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=6288231&mesg_id=6288231 but make sure you read post 26. A few loose cannons, again, are trying to speak for a whole movement. It's disgusting.

But since this thread is about Gloria, thank you Gloria!

39. I should not take issue with the expression "grace" but I think that is a lie
It is good if the feminists choose to come without a whole lot of hand holding. As a woman, I realize I'm being very cynical in saying it like that. But keep in mind, the way these organizations ganged up on NARAL for jumping ship the day of Edwards' endorsement. There is strength in unity, but there is also death in thoughtless uniformity.

But grace is not the right word for how Clinton handled the media fair and unfair scrutiny. Definitions 16 and 19 make more sense than Steinam's construction.

As an AA woman, I feel like she sold me down the river. The more I watched Stephanie Tubbs Jones defend her, the worse her fall from grace felt. But for the racial tint, I could easily have seen myself and Jones' shoes. It is disturbing that she was that close to being a favorite and lost it.
