Blowback? Emily's List Backs Steve Cohen's (D-Memphis) Opponent
In the wake of the Emily's List action, several Cohen supporters wondered if the congressman, a supporter of presidential candidate Barack Obama, had inadvertently invited it by a recent quip comparing Obama's never-say-die rival Hillary Clinton to the maniacally determined character played by actress Glenn Close in A Fatal Attraction. Longtime boosters of the former state senator and freshman congressman know well Cohen's tendency to improvise stand-up comedy lines. Indeed, his wit is regarded as a vital part of his legislative arsenal — as well as being a potential Achilles' heel.

In the case at hand, Cohen had been quick to make an apology, conveying "great respect" for Senator Clinton and continuing, "She has waged a historic campaign which has done much to break the glass ceiling. My comments obviously do not reflect the sentiments of Senator Obama or the Obama campaign. Nor do they reflect my opinion of Senator Clinton whom I have known for years and admire.

2. We need to remind many "women's organizations" that there's no "I" in TEAM.
I just don't get it! Perhaps it was because I was raised my a father and older brothers, but NO MATTER WHAT, you "don't whine" after you've lost the game. It's really WIMPY and disgusting.

Dammit, act like the Mature Adult Women that *we all* can be proud of and JOIN THE TEAM?!?

7. see my post below
the OP makes it sound like they endorsed a Republican.

For all I know the incumbent is a DINO that I would oppose too.

I would think primary challenges for incumbents are kinda rare, but there seem to be four candidates for that seat
http://www.politics1.com/tn.htm

I hope they don't weaken themselves for the general.

5. Emily's List should be very careful what they wish for. I understand
that Sen. Obama is expected to make the case for Hillary's SD's, because there were Obama supporters threatening a primary challenge to some of her supporters. I don't think "Emily" wants to go there, because this could be very ugly, and allow for some Repuke takeovers of normally safe seats.

6. they are backing Nikki Tinker?
http://www.tinkerforcongress.com/

I don't see that as a big deal. I donated money to Leonard Boswell's opponent too. Incumbents should not think their seats belong to them, and Emily's list endorsed her in 2006 as well.

13. Also, the mission of Emily's List is to support qualified female candidates
So there's nothing unusual about what they are doing here.

11. Eh, if it's blowback, it's minor
The article says Emily's List backed Tinker against Cohen in 2006 and she got within a handful of points of beating him. So, this time he opens his yap and they decide to support their preferred candidate, who's proven to be a credible contender. Hillary may have been the impetus, but it wouldn't take much. EL already had a beef with the guy.

12. What are they talking about?
The stated mission of Emily's List:

EMILY's List members are dedicated to building a progressive America by electing pro-choice Democratic women to office. We believe in the power of women as candidates, as contributors, as campaign professionals, and as voters to bring about great change in our country.

When women are involved in the political process, our democracy is truly representative. When women make policy, the needs of women and families are not ignored. When women vote, Democrats — who share our values and priorities — win.

===

Steve Cohen is not a woman. Nikki Tinker is a woman. BLOWBACK? WTF?
