The War is Over: Hillary Clinton, Harriet Christian, and Hiroo Onoda
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 12:59 PM by atufal1c
Ever hear the stories of the Japanese soldiers that never surrendered after WWII?

Lt. Hiroo Onoda was one of them. He entered the war at the very end of 1945 at 23 years old and was sent to a small mountainous island in the Phillipines. There he was told to NEVER give up until his superior officers came for him. Sometime soon after, he ended up, along with a few other soldiers, isolated and in hiding.

And when the war ended, they never knew.

Onoda first saw a leaflet that claimed the war was over in October 1945. When another cell had killed a cow, they found a leaflet left behind by the islanders which read: "The war ended on August 15. Come down from the mountains!

He thought it was an Allied trick.

Leaflet after leaflet was dropped. Newspapers were left. Photographs and letters from relatives were dropped. Friends and relatives spoke out over loudspeakers. There was always something suspicious, so they never believed that the war had really ended.

This went on for oh, 20 years.

Finally,in 1974, after being found by a student Japanese student named, Suzuki (who had told his friends that he was going to search for "Lt. Onoda, a panda, and the Abominable Snowman"), Lt. Onoda was convinced to surrender.

Suzuki traveled back to Japan and found Onoda's former commander, Major Taniguchi, who had become a bookseller. On March 9, 1974, Suzuki and Taniguchi met Onoda at a preappointed place and Major Taniguchi read the orders that stated all combat activity was to be ceased.

Soldiers like Onoda took their "Never Quit, Never Surrender" orders seriously. So seriously that they kept fighting long after the battle was lost. So much so that they ignored all of the signs.

Hillary Clinton has issued similar orders to some of her supporters. She's warned them to ignore the signs. So those orders will need to be rescinded by Hillary herself. She will have to go into the caves and hills and (Manhattan) islands and take her supporters by the hand and tell them to lay down their arms.

A Harriet Christian would be a great place to start. I believe that the most valuable thing Hillary Clinton could do for the Obama campaign would be to go and knock on Harriet Christian's door. And tell her the war is over.

4. Apparently, Sir, These Are the Actual 'Orders' From The Campaign
This has been sent as a mass e-mail by Sen. Clinton's campaign, according to numerous reports from forum members.

I wanted you to be one of the first to know: on Saturday, I will hold an event in Washington D.C. to thank everyone who has supported my campaign. Over the course of the last 16 months, I have been privileged and touched to witness the incredible dedication and sacrifice of so many people working for our campaign. Every minute you put into helping us win, every dollar you gave to keep up the fight meant more to me than I can ever possibly tell you.

On Saturday, I will extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy. This has been a long and hard-fought campaign, but as I have always said, my differences with Senator Obama are small compared to the differences we have with Senator McCain and the Republicans.

I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party's nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise.

When I decided to run for president, I knew exactly why I was getting into this race: to work hard every day for the millions of Americans who need a voice in the White House.

I made you -- and everyone who supported me -- a promise: to stand up for our shared values and to never back down. I'm going to keep that promise today, tomorrow, and for the rest of my life.

I will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise.

I know as I continue my lifelong work for a stronger America and a better world, I will turn to you for the support, the strength, and the commitment that you have shown me in the past 16 months. And I will always keep faith with the issues and causes that are important to you.

In the past few days, you have shown that support once again with hundreds of thousands of messages to the campaign, and again, I am touched by your thoughtfulness and kindness.

I can never possibly express my gratitude, so let me say simply, thank you.

6. Yes, but those aren't the ORIGINAL orders! :)

And I personally would like to see more praise of Obama. Maybe she says that he's not sexist. Or that he didn't play the race card. Or that he didn't, along with the DNC, rig the election.

I commend her for her support. She has made clear that Obama is better than the alternative.

But I want her to actually go to Harriet Christian's house and convince her to support Obama. I don't mean metaphorically, I mean Harriet's house. In Manhattan.

She can do that, if she wants.

I understand it might not happen.

But it would be worth more than her dropping a million leaflets that say, "I will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise."

That sounds a little tepid to me.

5. Well that might work if Harriet Christian was an actual person
But I got the impression that she (as well as the gym teacher with the instant purple bruises) were actors in a Rovian style video Astroturfing. And Harriet (or whomever she is) certainly is getting her 15 minutes out of it.

7. Damning, if true. I'd love to know for sure.
I admit she seemed almost perfect.

8. Soichi Yokoi
Another Japanese soldier who never got the word, or was unwilling to accept it. Amazing discipline some folks possess, no?

9. Yep. Why hasn't anyone sent Hillary to get Harriet before the Repubs do?

That's what I'd like to know.
