AP Breaking News: DNC bans lobbyist money; Dean remains as chair
WASHINGTON - Acting swiftly as his party's presumed presidential nominee, Barack Obama is keeping Howard Dean at the helm of the Democratic National Committee, while bringing in one of his top strategists to oversee the party's operations.

The campaign also announced that the DNC will no longer accept donations from lobbyists and political action committees, to comply with Obama's campaign policy. Party officials say they expect the DNC's staff to quickly expand to run an aggressive general election campaign.

3. That's great!
Obama is starting out on the right foot. Even many republicans are upset with all the problems we have in this country, and how much influence lobbyist money has on our government.

the moneyed continue to rule.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

14. I'm afraid it is.
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 01:24 PM by Benhurst
It would be good news if it weren't, and I would appreciate a link if you have source saying that it has.

The latest I have on bundling is discouraging, and I've never seen it refuted.

After eight years of the Bush Crime Family, I can live with business as usual; but I still resent smoke and mirrors, no matter who's putting on the show.

:hi:

But eliminating bundling is the key to getting the corporate and moneyed interests out of politics. A once and future lobbyist who working for a corporation and can bundle tens of thousands of Dollars from "individuals" working for a corporation and deliver it to a campaign is no better than a lobbyist who delivers a single check. Bush's campaign with its "Pioneers" was a master of the technique. All perfectly legal; but giving the major players influence no individual citizen has any hope of matching.

See: http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/04/22/681 /

" '(Obama) gets an asterisk that says he is trying to be different,' Weissman said. 'But overall, the same wealthy interests are funding his campaign as are funding other candidates, whether or not they are lobbyists.'"

16. We funded Obama ...

The people have funded Obama, so we own Obama. His views are not THAT different from Hillary. But when push comes to shove, every politician knows who funds them. THAT is why I trust Obama and not Hillary.

17. Meta as fuck.
It puts McAngrypants in a very difficult position--if he doesn't follow suit it makes him look even more in the pockets of special interests, but if he does he cuts himself off from a massive source of fundraising that he desperately needs...remember, McCain's fundraising ability sucks ass.

25. It's a beautiful marriage.
We'll have the fund raising prowess and grass roots organizing of the Obama campaign combined with the 50 state strategy and ability to reach out to activists of Dean. This should boost the DNC coffers substantially and help us put into play some of these formerly red states that are now borderline.

The banning of lobbyist and PAC money by the DNC is brilliant. John McCain has been trying to use a wedge of needed to accept public financing against Obama. Obama can point out that John McCain is circumventing campaign finance by using the RNC which will have to accept money from PACs and lobbyists to be competitive. Obama and the DNC will also be able to point out that the majority of our donations are from small donors while John McCain's are from large corporate types. He'll be able to throw the lobbyist/PAC issue along with large corporate donors in John McCain's face when he tries to tout moving to public financing.

Like Benhurst pointed out, the moneyed will find a way around this but what's important is the intent of the DNC.

33. Nothing short of a revolution
It is understood that political candidates cannot move forward unless they have money from a limited few sources. Terry McAuliffe pretty much set us on this path.

Are you saying now that the Dean is now representing the Democratic wing of the Democratic party?

You mean a REAL change we can believe in?

He really meant that?

I believe I might be witnessing pigs flying. Does this mean that the grassroots are turning out challenges for seats throughout the country?
