Is Obama Screwed When He Picks VP? Media Narrative Will be About Him Not Picking Hillary |
|
And not about his actual running mate. The media was obsessed when she said she was "open to being VP", even becoming more discussed than Obama actually winning the nomination.

2. If he picks Hillary, she stays the focus throughout the campaign. Picking her |
|
would be a sign of weakness, and would lead to further weakness.

Because even though the media will bitch and moan about it I doubt they have the same power they did four years ago, to me it seems like people are trusting the newsbox less and less these days.

5. He's just going to have to take it |
|
just like he took/wright/bitter-gate/michelle-obama attacks. But if you notice those aren't running 24/7 anymore and people get bored/shift focus to something else. So yes it will get attention, but it'll eventually come to a "what's done is done" and democrats can either respect his V.P.choice or actively go against the party. Either way we have to (and I think will) worry less about that and more on presenting/supporting the ideas of his campaign

8. Or make a purely symbolic in your face choice... |
|
...like he could select a frozen zygote. Yeah, I know, but what if it's been FROZEN FOR 35 years?
Then it MIGHT qualify for VP.
Just think about it...
Obama/FrozenFetus 08 : If you vote against this ticket, you will be responsible for the FrozenFetus getting flushed...
And it would scream out "limitless potential"... And no one is going to attack FrozenFetus. That'd be almost like smacking around a baby. So you could issue endless attacks, signed off on by FF, and expect almost zero retaliation.

7. The media is going to act stupid... |
|
...and fabricate stories out of whole cloth no matter who he picks.
It could be Obama/Jesus vs McCain/Judas and the media would make McCain out to be a messiah because he's giving Judas a second chance at a political career. The media narrative, if allowed to "write itself" is going to be sophmoric and low-brow, no matter the selections.
Bank on that, and let's plow ahead anyway.

10. Probably. I've said before that her surrogates are hyping the idea |
|
to maximize the negative reaction from whatever subset of her supporters are building up hope that she gets the 'consolation prize', even though those surrogates understand that she probably will not.
I don't know how they explain that. Either they're willing to foster the divide in the party, or they're ignorant of basic good sense about supporting Obama's choice.
Either way, the media will flog it on cue: "Why didn't he pick her?" "Will this doom his chances in November? Oh NOES!".
He needs to make the best choice (which in my opinion is definitely not Hillary) and brace for the next wave of Hillary supporter disappointment, however residual that may be. And like everything else the media has drummed up against him, he'll weather it.

He is at least a month away from picking a VP candidate. Certainly people will have other things to obsess about between now and then.

13. it can be alleviated by putting Hillary into another role, maybe she'll work with Elizabeth? |

And they can release ads about healthcare? Or form a healthcare panel.

16. See, that's ANOTHER benefit to him choosing Brian Schweitzer. |
|
Schweitzer is the farthest thing from a "politician" you'll ever find.
If Obama picks anybody else, there'll be Clinton talk.
If Obama picks Schweitzer:
1) The media will be so busy talking about how different Schweitzer is that it'll be all about him, not Clinton.
2) Schweitzer is so different that nobody will second-guess Obama's decision by comparisons to Clinton. If there are 10 different kinds of pie and you order the apple pie, people start debating which kind of pie is the best. If you order a blueberry muffin, there's no pie debate...people start talking about the differences between pie and muffins.
Unless somebody is really hung up on the "experience" issue (I think KOS is right when he says that going with a very experienced VP could backfire and highlight Obama's perceived inexperience) I have yet to see one negative of an Obama/Schweitzer ticket.

17. She swallows up all the campaign air... if he wants to win, she cannot be the choice... |
|
The VP has to defer to the P.
The VP should NOT be the focus of the media coverage. The P should.
After he picks someone else (and he WILL pick someone else), there will be about a week where the MSM laments the fact that they can't cover the Clintons anymore with a bunch of polls and stories about disgruntled Clinton supporters....
...and then the media narrative moves on.
I think he'll wait until mid-August to make the choice..... by which time, 80% of the Clinton supporters will have "moved on".

19. You can't expect anything different coming from the msm news outlets.. |
|
I mean seriously, in the last hour, thirty minutes was devoted to watching a water spout off the Florida coase, you know, the important news....
I guess we have to be thankful for the little time we are allowed on prime time live to discuss the real issues that concern us all...
