GE, the corporate media owner, who called reporters on the carpet for not attacking Gore enough.

Wow, we'd really be turning the page. How many decades ago was he in politics?

Every campaign leaks information favorable to their campaign to the press.

Even if this wasn't a genuine leak, leaks happen in every campaign.

Obama is no different.

Bullshit list just to create some talking point...

...Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota...said Obama’s team wanted his impressions about the people on the list, including the respect they command and their “standing with their colleagues.” He termed their discussion “wide-ranging.”

Well, if the Senator not only felt comfortable not only to talking to CNN but with using his name, IS it really a leak? Maybe Hillary put him up to it--he's listed as http://progressiveindependent.com/shalom/activism/dlcpods2.htm">a DLC member!

Clinton had a large voting block that strongly supports her (women, blue collar Democrats, hispanics, etc.) Warner likely turns Virgina blue, & Strickland turns Ohio blue...

Chris Dodd, Sam Nunn? - W----H----Y???? (neither delivers any state or helps w/a voting block)

In 2000, Liebermann was running for the Connecticut Senate seat while on the ticket w/Gore, so Mark Warner could run for the VA. senate seat...And hoping & assuming Obama wins, the VA. governor would appoint a successor, & I think there would be a special election in 2010..Any VA. residents confirm that?...I don't think Warner's replacement would be able to serve the entire 6 years....

Are we being punked?

Obama veep vetting team looks at retired military

Senator says former military leaders being considered for Obama's running mate

NEDRA PICKLER and MARY CLARE JALONICK
AP News

Jun 10, 2008 12:00 EST

snip//

The vetters have been holding meetings with several Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill to get their input. Conrad met with Holder and Johnson.

"I sensed from this meeting that they are still very much building the list and at the same time evaluating possibilities," Conrad said. "It's very clear they have reached no conclusions, not even tentative conclusions."

Many former military leaders have been involved in the 2008 Democratic presidential campaign. Some of Obama's most prominent campaign advisers have been Gen. Tony McPeak, who was Air Force chief of staff during Operation Desert Storm; Maj. Gen. Scott Gration, who flew repeated combat missions and has worked with Obama on a range of military issues since before he began his presidential campaign; and Richard Danzig, who was secretary of the Navy under President Clinton.

He might also look at some of former rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's top military advisers in a gesture of unity, retired generals who include Hugh Shelton, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; or Wesley Clark, who led the war in Kosovo and ran in the presidential primary four years ago. Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, who served as Navy secretary under President Reagan, has also been frequently mentioned as a possible running mate.

43. That's a little different than the way AP radio news reported it.
They quoted Conrad as saying that Team Obama was looking at three categories: Current elected officials, former elected officials, and former military officials, with no names mentioned.

Now, of course, that leaves the list wide open. "Former military official" could be Wes Clark, or Tony Zinni, or McPeak, or a dozen others.

Vice President Danzig? Well that presents a different mental picture altogether.......

55. Notice a couple of things
Conrad (the only one named as having spoken to the press) made a non-statement statement.

Senator Kent Conrad tells CNN Obama's vetters discussed 20 names, including some that are “outside the box.”

He said some are “top officials now,” others are “former lawmakers” and others are “former top military leaders.”

20 names? Thank you, very informational, a not very short short list.

SOme are outside the box - what a suprise! Everybody expected only the most conventional candidates to be considered, and now we know that's not the case.

As to the three categories, that kind of covers almost everybody i the realm of possibility, doesn't it? Maybe the "former top military leaders" part is a tiny, tiny bit of actual information, but with all the talk of how O needs national security back-up and Clark's name being mentioned all over the place, I doub that too many people were surprised to hear it.

My point is that Conrad said absolutely NOTHING, which is exactly what he had to do.

The list of names... I don't know, there is no info whatsoever as to where it comes from. I have no idea how this works, but I think it is a safe assumption to think that if names were mentioned (and they probably were), they were only mentioned to the congress people themselves, and not to their staffers, and I just cannot see Pelosi or Reid ro Durbin or whoever might have been in the talks, shooting their mouths to the press.

My conclusion: have fun with the speculations, but remember what Obama said the other day about the VP choice, and take all "leaks" with a mountain of salt.

56. Please, not Nunn. He was too much of a collaborator with Reagan, to my memory.
And Id on't think picking someone who's been around forever helps the change platform. Nunn is the quintessential Washington insider.

68. Big ol' red herring...
This just gives the press some red meat to chew while the vetting team is making their REAL choice. Obama himself said that the next thing we'd hear from him on the issue is the name of the person they've selected.

is much more important than who IS on it.

Warner because I think he's the best choice, and Nunn because Carter keeps hinting at him!

78. I hope the actual list is better
IMO, these are good choices:

Clinton
Sebelius
Warner (but the Senate seat might be a problem - if he helps the ticket, the positives outweigh the negatives)
Kaine

these are possible but questionable:

Webb
Biden
Dodd
Strickland

think these should be out:

Kerry
Edwards (better as Presidential candidate)
Nelson

think these are outright clunkers:

Nunn
Daschle
Bayh

Don't know about:

Reed

likely to be the ones being considered, IMHO.

100. Yep, me too. And since the Obama campaign does NOT leak,
I'm guessing this is more of a way to know who is not really in the running than anything. Especially since Edwards and Strickland have already said no emphatically.

I think Edwards would do it if he really thought the dems couldn't win without him, though.

87. eh. A lot of people say they wouldn't want to be VP
I don't think it really means anything. He'd make a good VP though if Obama felt he was helpful and talked him into it.
