Strickland Drops Name From Veepstakes
Posted by KYLE TRYGSTAD | E-Mail This | Permalink | Email Author
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, atop many political handicappers' list of potential running mates for Barack Obama, told NPR's "All Things Considered" today that he would "absolutely not" run alongside Obama in the general election.

As ABC News reports, Strickland told NPR: "Absolutely not. If drafted I will not run, nominated I will not accept and if elected I will not serve. So, I don't know how more crystal clear I can be."

Strickland backed Hillary Clinton in the March 4 Democratic primary in Ohio, campaigning with her around the state and helping her take a 10-point victory there.

Strickland was first elected governor in 2006, winning 61 percent of the vote and becoming the first Democratic governor in the state since 1986. Strickland previously served in the House of Representatives, serving six terms in the 6th District until being elected governor.

------

They are really trying to strong-arm Obama to choose Hillary as his VP. I ain't gonna happen!

2. Okay, so strike Strickland off the list
As to whether this was an attempt to get Hillary on the ticket, it was an idiotic move if that was the case.

10. Whoever "wins" the state would be my guess
DLC governors who insist on Diebold voting are no better than Repuke governors who insist on it.

16. when has Strickland ever insisted on Diebold?
Ted Strickland was elected in 2006. Jennifer Brunner (D), SOS of Ohio was elected in 2006 and has been working to reform the mess that Ken Blackwell (R) former SOS and R candidate for Gov left in the election infrastructure in Ohio. She has been battling the Republican Legislature and Ohio Press non-stop. She also recently won the Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for her work.

I haven't heard that Strickland was working against her. If I am wrong, please provide a link.

18. No, you're right
People who know nothing about Ohio should keep their pieholes shut. Brunner's doing great things and she was elected right along with Strickland. I don't like what I saw of him with Hillary, but I believe Brunner is sincerely dedicated to cleaning up Ohio elections for everyone's sake. She got rid of every voting machine in Cuyahoga County and now we vote on paper. It was a great start.

14. I would encourage the Obama campaign to continue to
to look forward and not to the past. Obviously, Senator Obama is a superior campaigner.

Of course, we should not write off Ohio with a Dem Governor. I keep seeing these posts where it's ok to write off all these states that Senator Obama may lose -- PA, OH, MI, FL, WV, KY. But everything will be fine because we'll win CO, VA, NC, NM, AZ. And that does not even get into the uncertainty of the Upper Midwest -- IA, WI, MN.

Please feel free to slam me for being a "concern troll," at the same time, I think we should pay some attention to "The Math." I do not advise writing off Ohio because the Democratic Governor supported Senator Clinton.

Thank you for listening.

19. Strickland has already said he'll fully support Obama as nominee
now that Hillary's out. I hope he means it.

I wonder when Stephanie Tubbs Jones will finally see reality.

23. I hope so too.
But with all respect, I'm not sure what that has to do with the point of my post.

I wasn't talking about Senator Clinton, Governor Strickland, or Congresswoman Tubbs-Jones. I was talking about Senator Obama.

I find it odd that so much of the discussion still focuses on Senator Clinton rather than Senator Obama. Unless my lying eyes have deceived me yet again, Senator Obama is the nominee and he has to assemble the electoral college majority. As with the primaries, the "popular vote" does not count.

Thanks for your time.

15. He was simply restating things he already said
He already said that he wasn't interested in VP - even Hillary's.

Besides, he wouldn't fit well with Obama - b/c of his Hillary support. Senator Sherrod Brown (voted against the war, campaigned heavily against NAFTA) would fit much better for O if he was looking for an Ohioan. But, I am selfish and want to keep Senator Brown.
