Last Divisive Topic: Leibovich NY Times says Clintons maintain an enemies' list
Whether you can believe it or not, here is an article that says guess what folks the reprisals are long from being felt.

Several names and entities are common among various list makers. The lineup invariably begins with A-list members like Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico; Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, the House Democratic whip; Gregory B. Craig, Mr. Clinton’s lawyer in his impeachment and trial; David Axelrod, Mr. Obama’s chief strategist; Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri; and several Kennedys. Some members of the Democratic Party’s rules committee, the state of Iowa and the caucus system in general are also near the top.

The news media have already focused on some list entries, including the online gossip purveyor Matt Drudge (who had the nerve to show up at Mrs. Clinton’s departure speech on Saturday), Todd S. Purdum of Vanity Fair (the author of a recent profile of Mr. Clinton) and the cable network MSNBC (whose hosts Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are charter list members, Clinton associates said).

I heard one television commentator say there is one rule in Obama Land: NO DRAMA.

How do you think this list ranks in terms of no drama?

9. presumably "disloyalty", given proximity to Richardson, Clyburn, Craig et al.
The Drudge Report warms to the Clinton camp, or is it vice versa?

WASHINGTON: As Senator Barack Obama prepared to give a major speech on Iraq one morning a few weeks ago, a flashing-red siren alert went up on the Drudge Report Web site. It read, "Queen of the Quarter: Hillary Crushes Obama in Surprise Fund-Raising Surge," and, "$27 Million, Sources Tell Drudge Report."

Within minutes, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's fund-raising success was injected via Drudge into the day's political news on the Internet and cable television. It did not halt coverage of Obama's speech or his criticism of her vote to authorize the war in 2002, but along the front lines of the campaign - the hourly, intensely fought effort to capture the news cycle or deny ownership of it to the other side - it was a telling assault.

Clinton's aides declined to discuss how the Drudge Report got access to her latest fund-raising figures nearly 20 minutes before the official announcement went to supporters. But it was a prime example of a development that has surprised much of the political world: Clinton is learning to play nice with the Drudge Report and the powerful, elusive and conservative-leaning man behind it.

4. aw, Claire McCaskill ? I love her.

I mean, I'm not saying that I necessarily believe there is a "list", but they did seem to a hyper sense of loyalty being the number one priority.

haha...it's so funny thinking that someone like Harold Ickes or Mark Penn has a "burn book" for the Clinton campaign, like in the movie Mean Girls. Hell, if there was a "burn book" circulated by Clinton staffers, can you imagine all of the great shit they would be writing about Mark Penn?

17. I am not selling anything.
And yes, it is obvious and inevitable that Hillary Clinton is going to have a major role in the Obama administration.

Duh.

19. do you have magical powers?
It seems the last time Hillary boosters insisted she was "inevitable" it didn't turn out too well, so you'll have to forgive my skepticism regarding your ability to foresee the future.

20. A few
Obama wants to win.

To do that he is going to need to appease Hillary (or her supporters) with an appointment or a place on the ticket.

Duh.

24. since Obama wants to win, he might avoid tethering himself to an anchor
I can't know if Hillary won't be VP/Secretary of Something, but I'd be lying if I (or anyone else) said I knew for sure. "Obvious and inevitable" is either an attempt at humor or self-deception on your part.

10. Can you imagine what a negotiation/conversation for Obama will be like when he talks to Bill/Hill?
*If you cut Bill Richardson off at his knees, then and only then will I campaign for you!*

I'd like to say they are so much more classy than that, but SD who knew they were going to support Obama sat on the fence for 2 months out of deference to this notion of loyalty.

I read a few articles that told them hold off, let her finish the campaign (if I remembered the source I'd post the link). So I started thinking, she knee capped him and stirred up the crowd more knowing she didn't have the support. I'm sure some of the SD were undecided, but based on Chuck on MSNBC, he said they were undeclared/not undecided.

Edited on Wed Jun-11-08 09:09 AM by lisa58
...but I'm sure there are hard-feelings all around with certain people they thought they could count on.

I think it is also interesting that the insiders didn't like people within the campaign - which might be why they lost the loyalty of people outside the campaign.

23. Old news, but there's one good thing about the status of that list now...
..and that's that being on it won't carry the same repercussions it used to, as they've lost a great deal of power over the party to Obama. His decision to keep Dean in and make several moves to telegraph his being in charge shows just how big the power shift is. They'll still have some keep pockets on their side, but even those will go to Obama and others now that the Clintons' power is on the wane.
