Media Matters: Tweety Matthews asks, Is Obama "too University of Chicago or too South Side Chicago"?

Matthews: Is Obama "too University of Chicago or too South Side Chicago" for working-class voters?

Having previously questioned whether Sen. Barack Obama can "connect with regular people" or if he appeals "only" to African-Americans and the well-educated, MSNBC's Chris Matthews asked if Obama is "too University of Chicago or too South Side Chicago" for working-class voters. Matthews made his comments after MSNBC senior campaign correspondent Tucker Carlson asserted that "the working-class voters of West Virginia and Kentucky, and their counterparts in a bunch of states, including Ohio and Pennsylvania" are "the voters you need to watch and he (Obama) needs to win."

During the June 10 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, Carlson said that "a number of Hillary supporters" will "go to Obama as a group. Because in the end, they have nothing in common with John McCain. Those aren't the voters the Obama people have to be worried about. It's the working-class voters of West Virginia and Kentucky, and their counterparts in a bunch of states, including Ohio and Pennsylvania, who didn't vote for Obama for other reasons. That's the problem. Because they're not ideologues, and they're not going to vote for the Democrat axiomatically. And, in fact, a lot of them said they're not voting for Obama, period. So those are the voters you need to watch and he needs to win." Matthews then asked, "Is there anything he can do in terms of, is he too University of Chicago or too South Side Chicago for those people? Which way is he going too far?"

Discussing Obama on the April 1 edition of Hardball, Matthews asked Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO): "Let me ask you about how he -- how's he connect with regular people? Does he? Or does he only appeal to people who come from the African-American community and from the people who have college or advanced degrees?"...

4. Obama is too poor *and* too rich!
Apparently "blacks and eggheads" outnumber "normal Americans," given the current opinion polling.

7. South side of Chicago *IS* working class
It doesn't get much more blue-collar than the south side of Chicago.

8. Yeah, but they're black. Oh, and Polish, Irish, and Greek, but they don't count either.
Only Appalachian Scots-Irish count. Those are the real Americans.

11. yea I'm a real American!!!
Funny thing though, I don't think any of us are real Americans. I think we are "United Staters". ;)

Okay, my sister is of this descent, has a high school education (her husband has less formal education)and they like Barack Obama and really like Michelle Obama, who is more South Side than Barack is. The difference is that although they are not as open as I am to other ethnic groups, they are not racist.

They want someone who understands the working man/woman in the WH and they think the Obamas are the one that do that. They never bought Hillary as that, and although they give Bill credit for balancing the budget, did not want them in the WH again because of what went on the last time they were there. They also did not think she was electable because the repubs would use that to attack her over and over again. She called and asked me if I trusted Barack, and I told her that I did but they had already came to their decision on their own. My trust only made her one that talked my other sister into voting for him.

These arguements pushed by the MSM are full of holes and will not hold water unless people give them the power to make their own predictions come true. JMHO

9. If a "regular person" bit tweety in the ass
he'd never be able to tell.

Amazingly he thinks all "regular people" resemble either the dukes of hazard, the beverly hillbillies, or archie bunker.

Regular people cannot have skins darker than tweety or the can't be regular.

12. Today he said Obama was from a Third World background
I think he's said that before too. I can't get mad at Tweety these days. I'm used to him now and I think he's funny.

14. I think he's funny too...in a twisted way. He's just such a one man traveling circus!
Does anyone really consider him relevent? Yeah, I've heard him describe Obama's background as having an "exotic lifestyle"

15. He just asked someone, "what scares you... too liberal or that he's black"?
Or something to that effect. It's too bad he believes this is just honest discussion of the issues.
