Let's vet the possible VP candidates ourselves!
I'll list a name of a potential VP candidate, each in a new post. Then reply to the relevant post with any negatives you can think of, so that the discussion for each person is grouped under their name. If you think of anyone I left out, just start a new reply with the person's name in all caps.

Let's not get into any positives or discussions about who is the best choice. The point is just to get all of the negative stuff out there. Let's just tear each of them down the best we can. }(

245. In 2007 NARAL Pro-Choice America gave Senator Bayh a grade of 100
Senator Bayh supported the interests of the NARAL Pro-Choice America 75 percent in 2006.

Senator Bayh supported the interests of the NARAL Pro-Choice America 100 percent in 2005.

Senator Bayh supported the interests of the NARAL Pro-Choice America 100 percent in 2004

I don't care much for Sen. Bayh either. But his record on abortion rights looks pretty solid.

246. I stand corrected.
His record on abortion rights is mostly good.

He did get a 50% from NARAL in 2003 so I guess he's not totally pure on the issue.

We have to be able to hit McCain hard. Can't do that with a handicap like someone who was as gullible as McCain voting for that damn war.

Plus his state his too small, Yankiee from an already reliably Blue state, and he's a senator and has been in Washington since he was 29.

65. He's been really openminded about gays in the military, "knew" but didn't tell,
no issues with women in the military. He sees war and violence as a failure of diplomacy. He's pro-choice. There was a pic of him on the cover of a gay-oriented magazine in 2004. I can't remember the name of it. I've ever heard any negative stories about him and minorities or any specific groups when he was running for president before. He's been out stumping for just about any Democratic candidate if they were running against a Republican.

77. I kind of like him too, but he's still never been elected to public office.
Does he support partial-birth abortion? Affirmative action? Gun control?

When you're elected to public office, you're essentially forced to weigh in on where you stand on a lot of these issues. Nobody knows where Wesley Clark stands on these issues. The best we could get from him now is just to ask him what he thinks of these positions, but that's still very risky. Often times a candidate's personal beliefs don't mesh well with their public record.

263. He was vetted for those issues in 2004.
To the best of my memory from his website and the interviews about him, he is pro-choice. He was more conservative on PBA, citing "only if the life of the mother is at risk," but he's seems thoughtful enough to understand that it is necessary in cases of severe fetal abnormalities. He was endorsed by Michael Moore among other liberal candidates. http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/message/index.php?messageDate=2004-01-14 He is also very affirmative action-oriented from what I remember.

He got an "A" rating from the NRA, IIRC, but he also said, "if you want an assault weapon we have a uniform and two shiny pairs of boots for you in the United States Army." CNN said his position is "Close gun show loophole; ban assault weapons; use gun-buying data."

According to this website, he is a populist leaning liberal. He is plotted on the bottom on the page in the left quadrant.
http://www.ontheissues.org/Wesley_Clark.htm
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/special/president/issues/index.clark.html

True, we don't know how someone is going to vote on an issue until they are in office, but alot of these issues don't arise at a local level below state govt. HE has shown his liberal attitude towards social issues while a leader in the Army. He seemed very progressive when I was reading about him in 2004. Seemed that he really loves his country. I hope this helps.

332. Clark's position on gun control makes him unsuitable as VP
The Texas Democratic Party just affirmed that the Second Amendment guarantees an "individual right" to keep and bear arms. This does not mesh well with Clark's position on guns that have legally been in civilian hands for a hundred years.

90. McCain ran for President in 2000 you know
The McCain running for President in 2008 wouldn't recognize the McCain of 2000.

This still is a negative you know. Sure, one could argue that he defined a lot of his positions back in 2004. But he could just as easily define them now in 2008. There is always a difference between rhetoric and record though.

I'm not trying to hate on him, but this is supposed to be a vetting thread. Hillary tried to paint Obama as not being completely pro-choice earlier in the primary season, claiming he was only about big speeches. His political record backed him up and shut down the criticism immediately.

Other than that, I really, really like the man. He's brilliant, speaks multiple languages, doesn't have homophobia, treats women and minorities well, understands economics, running large organizations, foreign policy, warfare, the military, etc. He looks great and has a wonderful smile. 97. FYI.....for anyone interested
http://www.rapidfire-silverbullets.com/2006/12/wes_clark_and_the_soa_schools.html

Wes Clark and the SOA (Schools of Americas)

Some would wish to saddle Wes Clark with the total ridiculous credit for being the sole supporter and abater of the SOA based on his one year stint in 1996-97 as CICEUR, then it would be fair and appropos that he then be also given all of the credit for all of the positive changes in Latin America in them being more to the left than even America currently (more leftists have been elected and govern there than ever before!). In fact, 1996 was the year many revelations were made on the SOA and the year that changes were requested and later granted. if we're gonna go way out there, might as well be all emcompassing in everyway imaginable!

Do these same people know that Clark did not institute the SOA (which was established back in the 40s)? Do they know that it is congress that funds it? Do they know that it was while Wes Clark was CIC that reforms were done there? Do they know that the worse abuse in Latin America by those who may have graduated from the SOA occurred in the '60, '70 and '80s way before Clark's time? Do they know that Wes Clark is not responsible for the SOA and has stated that if anyone can point to abuses there, if he were President, he would shut it down? Do all of the "left" anti SOA peeps know that maybe what they should also concentrate on are the human abuses going on in China and in Iraq and many other p, as opposed to this old Red Herring always pulled out and slammed into Wes Clark's face as though he really is more responsible for its existence than all those folks in the senate, the house and the executive branch....while Wes Clark never had a vote? They must not know any of these things, otherwise same folks would be busy writing their senators and congressional representatives telling them to defund the school.

259. My main complaint
is that he is a real believer in American foreign policy and engagement and much of the Clinton approach who sees how Bush has been incompetent corrupt or ruined things but not called into question the whole wonkish ball of wax. That will not hurt him at all on the campaign trail but will add a big voice in cabinet meetings to the danger zone.

Voice sounds like George Bush. Seasoned but bluntly fearless speaker. Hasn't been tripped up yet by media, but will he know how to adapt to the VP political role and its innate powerlessness?

Enemies in the military. The Bosnian air raids.

This is a great post BTW in that it so far has the magic of not creating DU hatreds or fodder for the GOP or descend into the personal life dirt.

It is changing my mind on a lot of choices. Clark is looking very good(or in the spirit of the post, the least bad?) and I'd rather he be VP than Secretary of State. Need more on Kane.

He was a loose cannon as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO and was actually relieved of duty early due to some serious breech of military protocol. His temper rivals that of McCain. We're vetting - so there you go.

174. I originally included Clinton and almost included Edwards and Kerry
But then I thought better of it and edited the Clinton post to list all of those people. I don't think any of them are very likely and they have all been prominent presidential candidates so we all know a lot about them.

I didn't want the thread to turn into a rehash of past primary grudges. I wanted to foster a new round of negativism so that new grudges can emerge.

I kid of course. The point is, I don't know very much about a lot of these people and I'm sure others are in the same position. You hear about somebody who sounds perfect and then you find out that they once donated money to NAMBLA or something. I thought it might be useful to get all of the bad stuff out there in the open and organized on one central thread.

That his control of the voting machine company then didn't have something to do with him getting elected.

Even if he isn't involved with cheating, just having that bad halo over his head is bad enough.

If you're talking about someone who's been those trying to examine how bad they are like Brad Friedman, or Clint Curtis, then I might feel that it would be a plus. Not sure that I'd be ready to declare them as VP candidates though.

I think Hagel would be far better as Secretary of Defense, coupled with Dennis Kucinich as Secretary of Peace. That would be a decent "bipartisan" combo to handle future conflicts, and we wouldn't have a Republican next in line to the presidency, which frankly scares me.

114. So, specifically his record is...
That he has voted against the so-called "partial birth" abortions, which doesn't concern me so much considering so many Dems were essentially forced to.

I find Kaine's abortion position to be his biggest drawback, and the biggest issue I have with it is this, he supports parental consent laws. But he is also against (and I believe has stopped state funding for) abstinence-only sexual education. That's a plus.

But it doesn't seem that he's made his "philosophical" pro-life position into much of a political issue and I'm sure that he'll be more than happy to jump on board Obama's pro-choice platform.

Edited on Thu Jun-12-08 06:11 AM by terrya
For some, that would be a deal breaker to just stay home in November. And quite honestly, I wouldn't blame them.

Nunn as VP would make a mockery out of everything positive Obama has said about LGBT Americans.

It's astounding that Nunn is even being considered.

I normally wouldn't include family members in the vetting process, but this one was a little disturbing.

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-op-klein30mar30,0,2240882.story

""Don't Drop the Soap," a board game created by the son of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas. The game "is simply intended for entertainment," said Nicole Corcoran, the governor's spokeswoman. What, after all, could be more entertaining then trying to "avoid being cornered by the Aryans in the shower room" (one of the goals of the game, according to its promotional material)?"

If her son gets anywhere near the media, it won't be pretty.

75. The Earl of Stirling likes her...
'Caroline Kennedy, on the other hand, would be a totally fantastic choice. She is both an outside Washington "change we can believe in" person, yet one linked to the Kennedy Camelot years. She is, in fact, the last of the Camelot children after her brother John's death. She would appeal to women, to young people, to working class voters (the "bread and butter" of the Kennedy political machines for over 40 years), to Catholics, to Jews (her husband Edwin is Jewish), to all of those of us 50 and above who remember the Camelot years. Caroline is a well educated attorney and editor with an American background linked to both far better times and to a America that has traditional high moral standards. She is Jack and Jackie's daughter and heir.

Her selection would be a totally fantastic choice that would electrify the coming election.'

on (a) it's also interesting to know whether they were silent/fudgy on IWR and Iraq, or what, and on (b) it needs to be the KINDS of foreign policy experience (eg Richardson, Graham, Boxer, Biden) that don't merely provide an argument in their favor, but actually CLAM THE MEDIA SNARKS UP.

General Norman Schwarzkopf was responsible for the military actions taken in the Horn of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Schwarzkopf was very worried about his plans to defeat Saddam’s military force. At this time, Saddam’s forces were ranked the world’s fourth largest army to the United States armed forces that were ranked seventh. The General wrote the President saying that every bit of information he received would be the most accurate, even if it was bad news. This was due to the history of the false information given to the President during Vietnam in an effort to please the President. The false information resulted in disastrous decisions during Vietnam, and Schwarzkopf did not want a repeat of this. He also gave frequent press conferences, and was nicknamed "Stormin' Norman." After the war, Schwarzkopf was made an honorary private first class in the French Foreign Legion. He was the first and the only American to be honored with this. A few of the other medals he has received are Defense Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.

251. Rep. Adam Smith (Washington)
If Barak is about change and doing things differently, why not a new face?

Interesting Blog here:

http://bluenc.com/obama-veepstakes-(been-sitting-on-this-for-a-while)

Dark Horse: Sen. Chuck Hagel (NE), Mayor Michael Bloomberg (NY), Rep. Adam Smith (WA)
These are my long-shot picks. One Republican, one Independent who used to be a Democrat before he used to be a Republican, and one guy you’ve probably never heard of (yeah he’s not that Adam Smith). Hagel would certainly feed well into a message of new politics and have crossover appeal; he’s also had a lot of nice things to say about Obama recently. Bloomberg also has a lot of independent appeal (and billions of his own money to spread that appeal) but is still questionable. However I think the one that emerges here is Adam Smith. An early Obama backer and effective surrogate he’s shown he can handle himself well with the media. An effective campaigner he was able to turn a Republican district into a safe Democratic seat. As a long serving member of the House he has served on the Foreign Affairs and Armed Services Committee and is chair of the Subcommittee on Unconventional Threats (which might be handy if your administration was facing an unconventional threat like say…terrorism). This is a solid background on Foreign Policy that compliments Obama’s rather than overshadowing it. And what says “new politics” quite like picking someone that’s completely off the radar of the mainstream media?
Bracket Winner: Rep. Adam Smith

278. A SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS SO FAR
Edited on Thu Jun-12-08 03:02 PM by ContinentalOp
Here's a summary of the results so far. I tried to leave out stuff about people's voices, funny sounding names, or questions of style and just focus on their votes, statements, and verifiable facts from their past. I also left out some of the more strategy-oriented stuff like "doesn't add anything to the ticket" or "can't have two minorities." I also left out vague stuff that didn't cite a specific example (DLCer, DINO, warmonger, etc).

Let me know if you see any problems or omissions and I'll edit them.

Of course, he was the one who said that "The Vice Presidency isn't worth a pitcher of warm piss", so that could disqualify him. That and the fact that he's been dead for several decades.
