12. Don't be sorry...I choose the car I drive and where I live in relation to work.
I don't complain.

I live 22.5 miles from work because I love the neighborhood and I drive a car that eats premium gas at a rate of 17MPG because I love the car. Those are my choices and I don't whine about the effects of them.

I just thought that a $50 fillup would be low for a lot of people.

44. I had a Volkswagen Passat Diesel
It got really good mileage for me. I traded it in for a used Honda Pilot. I loved driving my VW and the mileage. I don't care for the mileage of the Honda but I don't have backaches anymore from driving. It is more versatile and I can carry more people and more stuff. Costs more to operate but it works out best for me in the long run.

Raebrek!!!

I paid $4.21 per gallon here in Longview, WA a week ago, less a 10 cent per gallon Safeway discount. It was the first time I had bought gas in two months though. I live within walking distance of almost everything I need, and my car gets 30 mpg in town, 40 on the freeway.

congrats. what's your secret?

mine is public transportation for everything and heavy reliance on a bike. you'd be astonished at how much I travel. I used to commute 32 miles each way to work on my bike! bike/train on the way out to the office, and (if it was a nice day) bike all the way home. Used to have to use the car in heavy snow or rain, but now that I'm working from home I finally got rid of the car once and for all!

33. Nothing funner than getting a text picture on my cell phone
from hubs the first time he had to fill our company van up and it was more than $100.00...that was WEEKS ago....and he snapped a quick picture of the pump total and sent it to me...that sucked REALLY bad.

Now I am seeing receipts for $130.00+ fill ups...sigh...it is going to get worse too. ALL...ALL...I repeat EVERY single wholesaler we deal with informed us in writing this past week, everything we buy from every company is going up 18%....that is on top of the 8% it went up the end of April. That is 26% folks....get ready for what is coming end of June from every retail outlet, plumber, repair person, carpet sales person...you name the product, it is going up somewhere in the area of 20% in about 2 weeks....and if ANY of the product involves steel? Oh yeah its gonna hurt.

Not to mention Iowa cornfields under water...if I were a retail market analyst, I would be calling them NOW telling them Xmas will be the biggest bust ever because people will have to feed their kids and save for gas to drive to work....then I would look for two additional jobs.

I am going to stop right now....because I feel a dangerous rant coming. I see people going hungry, and not just those below the poverty line in this country....those folks will be starving. Scary times coming, and I feel weird saying that because I am not normally an alarmist, but now? Yeah, I can almost FEEL it coming.

39. I am 100% reliant on public transportation and my bike!!!
I started working from home ages ago and had kept my car. I was using it for all manner of thing, especially travel. About 5-6 months ago I dumped the auto, which was much more of an "I'm going green" thing than a gas price thing. I also generally hate having a car, live in a big city, and now use public transportation to go EVERYWHERE.

My girlfriend lives about 300 miles away from me and that's the hardest thing - but there's a bus or a train and it gets me there in one piece, without sitting in traffic, and I can do the crossword and catch up on some Zs!

I will be moving soon (to be with my girl) and we will keep one car for the two of us. I will use my bike and the bus for day to day. The car will be more of a "grocery" and errand type of thing. We'll be in a smaller city that will require a bit more driving.

When I lived in Indy, or even when I lived in relatively large towns (5000+ people), I almost never drove. Stayed in shape walking to the store and to work. Now that I live in a town of 180, I have to drive out of town to buy anything, which sucks. Looking forward to moving back to the city, so I can stop driving again.

51. When I bought my car, it could hold only $22 worth of gas.
18 gallons x $1.22/gal = $22

Now it holds $70 worth. Isn't progress amazing?:silly:

Last week, I just paid $40 for gas for the first time in AGES. Gauge read a little over half full ('empty' actually means several gallons left, FWIW).

I am going to be moving -- by rental truck -- in the next couple of months. I remember how hard it was to keep cash in my wallet when every fill-up of those 7-10 mpg trucks ran me $50-85. Now a tankfull will be worth nearly $200 -- and those rental trucks DON'T have locking gas caps. x(

Large tank (35 gallons) of regular at my local price of $4.71 per gallon = over $160.00

But of course I never let it get completely empty so a fill up is about $150.00

I'm taking it on a 600 mile round trip this weekend so we shall see.

I can go about 320 miles before I hit E. Filled up Monday and I have a 1/2 tank left now.
Think I am going to explore the light rail option into my Dallas job from my suburb since that is the trip where I use most of the gas (roughly 40 miles roundtrip 5 days a week). Should cut my fill up amount in half, at least. My employer pays for an annual light rail/bus pass so I won't have to worry about spending what used to be my gas $$ on light rail $$.

68. I paid $125 a couple days ago to put gas in my Chevy pickup
which is what I drive most of the time because I need it for business. It's got a 34 gallon tank on it, and the tank wasn't even empty when I filled it. Just for business alone, I have to spend between $125 and $225 per week now on gas. Not good.

Gas prices in my area are averaging about $4.27 today for regular. It now costs me a little over a dollar to drive 4 miles with my truck.

70. We haven't bought gas for 2 weeks now. Husband takes light rail
and I work at home on the computer (when I'm not here on DU, dammit). And the son who lives at home while in grad school is in DC this summer for an internship. My other son lives close to his work and doesn't even have a car.

73. Driving 55 really has saved me gas.
Yeah, people pass me but I don't care.
I paid $4.38/gallon this morning for the lowest level gas.

74. I slowed down too
and it really makes a difference. The gas lasts a lot longer.

I just stay in the right hand lane and watch the big 4 wheel drive pickups and SUV's scream by me at like 80 plus mph and 13 mpg if their lucky!

Those things are dinosaurs now. Their resale value is in the toilet. People will be owing much more on these gas hogs than their worth. just like the housing crisis eh?

Wait till it hits 6 bucks a gallon, soon I bet. People will seriously be hurting then.

75. I just think, "OK, speed on, I'll pay 60 cents less a gallon than you!"
I was skeptical when I heard the difference between 55 and 75 mph is about 60 cents - but it has really helped much more than I ever imagined.

76. A simple device should be required on all vehicles.
My Volvo had it and my Prius has it now.

A realtime MPG readout. A proactive president and congress would include this device along with higher fuel economy standards and all the rest, like NOT holding light trucks and SUVs to a lower or standard.

Sure, it would make it harder for dealers to sell guzzlers after a test drive (imagine the conversations as prospective buyers compare actual to EPA mileage figures!)

High speeds and air resistance:
Resistance increases with the square of the speed, which explains the physics of driving slower.

I've done tests with the Pruis over long runs on flat straight roads at constant speeds and developed a formula for MPG for my car:

MPH + MPG = 110 (at speeds between 50 and 70)

50 MPH gets 60 MPG
60 MPH gets 50 MPG
70 MPH gets 40 MPG

My lifetime average MPG is 39.5. My best MPG after using one tank of gas was 51 MPG. I don't hypermile and do around 80 on most freeways here in California.

78. Do you pump/glide?
For those times you're not on cruise control, lift your foot from the accelerator, then gently re-apply. This will give you a few more mpg's as it allows the battery to assist more, even at speed. Lots of info at http://john1701a.com

I'm getting between 47-50mpg average per tank. My 05 Prius will be hitting 80k this month. :) :) :)

80. I have read about pump/glide and tried it...
...with great results! I'll have to see how successful it is on long Interstate-5 trips between San Jose and LA for example.
It's also something I can do "around town" as long as traffic isn't too thick.
Much of my driving is SF Bay area with too much traffic and drama for me to be able to do anything but stay safe!

Love the Prius, except that I find the seats uncomfortable.

86. Depends on the model car you have, but...
I would guess that one could be added to any car, but different units needed depending upon model.

A quick Googling of "MPG meter" lead to:

http://www.porcine.com/gps/mpg/mpg.html

and

http://www.linear-logic.com/

Try searching for "trip computer", too.

And great idea, please post any good products you might find for us all to consider getting for our cars, or for the cars of our loved ones!

87. Here are some interesting links that help you figure your real MPG:
http://www.kiplinger.com/magazine/archives/2007/03/drivetime.html
http://www.kiplinger.com/tools/gas_mileage/

They are obviously averages based upon your model and its specifications, but it's still a lot more accurate than the government's mpg quotes. Unfortunately it only works for the last two year's models, but it still gives you an idea.

I found this meter too: http://www.kohlermpg.com/
It says it works with any car or truck!

81. Boaters are hurting too.
Just like SUVs, I'm seeing lots of boats going up for sale around these parts in the San Joaquin - Sacramento Delta.

Marinas mark up fuel by a considerable amount. Try $7.50/ gallon.

Trailered boats can fill up at ordinary stations, but that's only good for a few hours.

At 6 gallons per hour for a small boat and worse as they get bigger, even little outings are costly.

I sold my 17 foot power boat last summer.

I'm building a solar boat based on a SeaCycle platform. Two 165 watt panels, two 120 ah gel cells, one 65 lb thrust motor. Have all parts, need to assemble. Quiet cruising ahead!

88. Almost $40, I think, and that was a month ago!
The last time I filled up was about a month ago, when we went to West Virginia to campaign for Obama. Fortunately I still have about a half a tank left...hoping to only have to fill up one more time this summer, unless I go on a road trip somewhere to campaign.
