McCain campaign spends big ad dollars in Michigan
Sen. John McCain has been popping up all around Michigan every day for the last two weeks. His Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama has made two trips to the state in the past month with a third planned on Monday when he comes to Detroit.

How does McCain do it?

Ah, the magic of television.

The Arizona senator has been airing two commercials statewide since May 28 -- an ad buy that costs an estimated $500,000 a week, said Rich Robinson, executive director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, a group that tracks campaign spending in the state. They are the first salvos in what likely will be a long battle

"The fact that he is spending money now with relatively scarce resources is certainly a good indication of how important Michigan is to him," Robinson said.

The ads highlight some of McCain's economic policies and his desire to keep the country safe from terrorists.

-snip-

Even though McCain has appealed to some Michigan independents and Democrats in the past, he has problems here, too, said Ed Sarpolus, a political pollster who works for the Michigan Education Association.

"During the primary, he said, 'face it, the jobs aren't coming back,' " Sarpolus said. "And that hurt him here. So the Democrats are going to stay on the economy message."

1. He only wishes.
The only way he DOES bring it into play, primary clusterfuck notwithstanding, is if Willard Romney is his VP--and that will cause him to shed some other states.

2. I hope McCain pends a LOT of money in Michigan.
That would be less money available to him in Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He needs a couple of those states plus Michigan to get close to 270.
