Coulter: McCain a "Lickspittle" Unworthy of "Kissing Bush's Behind"

Read More: 2008 Presidential Election, Ann Coulter, Barack Obama, John McCain, Rush Limbaugh, Media News

In her newest syndicated column, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter calls the U.S. occupation in Iraq "a stunning success," awards President Bush the status of "moral giant," and trashes Sen. John McCain as one of "the weakest members of the herd."

Since 2001, right-wing pundits have increasingly used offensive and violent rhetoric to humiliate Democratic Party candidates and politicians and to undermine political debate of important issues. Coulter's attack on Sen. McCain confirms a rising trend of right-wing pundits using this tactic of humiliation and violent language to brand Sen. McCain a danger to the safety and well-being of the country.

Coulter's column was penned in reaction to the Democratic Party's argument that a McCain presidency would be tantamount to a third term of the Bush administration. Rather than defending Sen. McCain in the face of Democratic Party criticism, however, Coulter praises Bush as "a great President," then lashes out at both liberals and Sen. McCain as "lickspittles" not "worthy of kissing Bush's behind."

Coulter leaves her readers to do the final step of calling sen. McCain a 'liberal' through her oft-used propaganda technique of guilt-by-association. In this case, the final paragraph of her column makes it virtually impossible for readers to miss the larger associated she wants them to draw:

There is not a liberal in this country worthy of kissing Bush's rear end, but the weakest members of the herd run from Bush. Compared to the lickspittles denying and attacking him, Bush is a moral giant -- if that's not damning with faint praise. John McCain should be so lucky as to be running for Bush's third term. Then he might have a chance. (link)

Sen. McCain is going to lose the election, Coulter is arguing, because his lack of praising Bush makes him a liberal.

Beyond the critique of McCain, Coulter's column is a bellwether of how right-wing pundits plan to use their influential media platforms to drive political debate up to the general election.

10. He's something giant, all right, but it certainly isn't moral.
Kinda like if you took a mountain of cowshit and sculpted a human out of it that bore a remarkable resemblance to a chimpanzee...

38. Interesting story about Coulter....
After Bill Clinton left office, Coulter was basically out of work. So she ended up courting the confederacy nutballs, giving speeches on the pro-confederacy agenda at really small venues in southern states, and some of these pro-confederacy people were really ugly bigots.

I wrote a column about her and her new line of work, and after it was published I got a telephone call from a progessor at a college in South Carolina. Apparently, she and this professor were very chummy, and he called me up to let me know that my criticism of Coulter was way out of line, that she was a fair-and-balanced, patriotic Amercan, yada-yada-yada, libel and slander, yadda yadda yadda....

I looked up the professor's bio at the college, and he was actually a law professor. He has written some pro-confederacy papers, too.

I actually felt kind of sorry for her at that point. She had fallen so far, and now her champion was a law professor from a small college, who was obviously trying to intimidate me.

32. Last time I looked, moral giants don't mock a condemned person's plea for mercy
For the life of me, I don't understand why Gore and then Kerry didn't run the image of Bush mocking Karla Fay Tucker's plea for clemency into the ground during their campaigns.

I think regardless of how you feel about the death penalty, the idea of a leader mocking someone during a live TV interview would be a turn-off. Hell, even Pat Robertson asked Bush to change the punishment to life w/o parole.

and I bet the GOP isn't bothered one little bit by this attempt to make their candidate seem palatable to the average Joe.

33. She's calling McCain a Liberal. I think she was given order (as per usual)
to paint him thus. So he will look better to a centrist voter. See she is separating MCCain from Bush with this column. Which is exactly what McCain has been trying to do for the last week.

36. TAKE NOTE: this will be a strategy that SERVES McCain, while appearing not to
He needs Bushites to call him out in order to get distance. Do not be fooled by AC's spew. She's towing the party line--FOR McCAIN--every time she says he's not at all like Bush.

39. Coulter, Right Wingie-Dingies Writing Their Alibis For Losing 2008
I can't help but wonder if the Coulter creature and other right wingie-dingies are writing their alibis for the GOP getting clobbered in the 2008, the alibi being that John McCain and the Republican ticket lost "because they weren't conservative enough."

I confess mixed feelings about such rationalizing. On the one hand, I have little but contempt for most of the "product" generated by most of today's "conservative" authors. On the other hand, I'm hoping that enough of the surviving Republican big shots take Coulter's screed at face value in 2010, 2011, and 2012 to drag the GOP even further to the right; I'd love to see the Far Right dragging the Republicans through multiple stompings.
