2. Too soon after the primaries for Obama
If Clinton doesn't get the pick (and personally I really hope she doesn't) then healing wounds would be opened afresh.

McCain will announce his VP right after the Democratic National Convention, to try and blunt Obama's post-convention bounce.

So did Gore with Lieberman and Bush with Cheney.
