As a Missourian Democrat, I'd oppose Claire McCaskill for VP! |
|
First off, I'm not saying Barack Obama is interested in offering her. But based on the fact that most media sources note she is one of the closest people to Senator Obama, and shes been a very vocal backer of his for some time now. CNN's political ticker had an article about McCaskill and whether she'd accept VP if offered. She danced around it.
I have met Senator McCaskill several times in her bid in 2004 to become Governor, which she lost to Matt Blunt, and in 2006 against Jim Talent.
And I've followed her career thus far in the Senate with interest as a Democrat who supported her in both races.
I've been disappointed thus far in the centrist image she's tried to gain since becoming a Senator, and she's done nothing to prove thus far she would follow in the same footsteps of Senator Obama with a really progressive agenda for our country.
She's a talented Senator, I just haven't seen her give this state what we thought we'd get by outting Senator Talent....and thank god we did.
If Obama wants a woman on the ticket, I like the sound of Kathleen Sebelius or Hillary Clinton!
Not Claire McCaskill.

1. We cannot afford to have two relatively unknown |
|
people on the ticket.
Obama came from nowhere and energized many. His running mate has to be someone with a solid track record in his/her field, preferably the military or foreign affairs.

3. I'm against McCaskill on the ticket, but I dont think Obama is unknown anymore |
|
I actually think the more unknown person in this campaign is John McCain.

6. That'd be my main misgiving. |
|
I think her state auditor/fiscal pragmatist perspective is something sorely needed in the executive branch and complements Obama's idealism nicely.
It does give some legs to stupid experience arguments, but it may be worth risking it because no matter who's the veep they'll concoct some fake reason the person is inadequate.

5. Me, too! She's voted to enable this administration on too many |
|
issues.
But her vote in support of granting immunity to the telecom companies really pi$$ed me off!

7. I didn't like her vote for retroactive immunity for phone companies.. |
|
...which gave our private data to the Bush Admin.
I'm also disappointed that she talked about investigating war profiteering when she was running for the US Senate, but I haven't heard much about her doing anything about that since then.

8. I don't think you folks in Missouri realize what a big deal it is |
|
to have a woman Senator with a D after her name in a red state who unseated a sitting Repu. Some of the Dems here in TN criticize Gov. Bredesen for governing from the middle but he's been successful. I wish we had a Senator with a D.

10. Trust me, I get the significance. |
|
Speaking as someone who voted to put her there, her voting record pisses me off.

11. A big deal, yes. Doesn't mean she's a good Senator or qualified for VP. |
|
Sorry. At this point, I hope she gets the boot by the Democratic party when she goes for re-election against a HOPEFULLY progressive candidate. Unless she changes her voting record and centrist rhetoric pretty quickily.

15. You make a very good point |
|
I tend to give centrist or conservative-leaning Dems in red states a little bit of leeway because their first priority is to represent the constituents of the states they come from. If they go off and do what they want, they find themselves out of a job when the two or six years are up.
I gave John Edwards some slack here, since he had to work from the middle when he represented North Carolina. After he left office, he had much more freedom.

9. As a fellow Missourian I concur |
|
I am not that fond of her as Senator. I have sent her many a not complaining about her votes. I once stated that had I wanted a Republican Senator I could have voted for Jim Talent.
I am sure I am on her Senatorial ignore list at this point.

13. I doubt that Sen. Boxer as the V.P. nominee is even remotely plausible |
|
Nothing against her or her record which is for the most part very impressive.
It just seems completely implausible to me that they would chose someone whose imagery epitomizes the San Francisco (actually Marin County) latte liberal coming from a state that is now considered a safe Democratic state. (nothing against California latte liberals either)
I'm quite certain they will be looking for a V.P. nominee who comes from a "toss up" state who would help the Democrats increase their viability in small towns and rural areas, among working class white voters and would have appeal in the West, the Southwest, the South and border states.

14. I posted a thread asking about Sen. Boxer's chances for VP - |
|
I admire her, she seems cool, collected, never flustered, she speaks her mind and she's feisty.
Anyway, everybody jumped on me about. EVERYBODY liked her too, but they thought she'd bring down Sen. Obama's chances of winning the election.
