Anyone who is anything but a hopeless, antisocial loser could do so much more by just walking themselves out the front door, going out into that wonderful place we call "the world," and furthering their cause by volunteering, organizing events, talking to people, or even picking up a phone and calling.

It seems to me that one of the most helpful things that happens here is the exchange of information, and they really can't disrupt that. The people here are among the most dedicated to the democratic party, so it's not as if freepers are going to sway votes by rabble-rousing -- with the minor exception of the end of the close primary race, where they *might* have swayed a few angry Hillary voters.

All in all, though, the ridiculous amount of time and effort they seem to spend trying to disrupt this place looks to me like a pathetic circle jerk that keeps them from doing anything truly useful for their party -- though I'm sure they amuse themselves with their own pseudo-cleverness, and try to convince each other that they've accomplished something.

Looks like a form of inadequacy compensation to me. Let them go at it. It must be boring and frustrating to try and support someone like McCain. They probably need something like this to amuse themselves during an election cycle without a real candidate.

Freepers stirring up mischief (or any other "tame" mischief makers for that matter) on here is one thing and that's what moderators are here to sort out and they seem to do it very well indeed, so I think Skinner has that all sorted out and has contingencies in place.

However I'm more worried about the darker people - the people who want to actually hack into the Democratic Underground website proper, take control of the site, do denial of service attacks and deprive access to this wonderful online community.

I run my old church's website - it's a small 30-50 active member church and it's not a high traffic site - heck most of the church members don't own a computer. Yet it attracts attention from people who thinks it's funny to want to post spam news messages about how to get free porn and viagra and other stuff unbecoming of a conservative christian church. It was also the subject of a denial of service attack and a site takeover. I hadn't been maintaining it properly and it got taken over by someone describing themselves as the "Muslim Hacker", with a lot of text in Turkish that I can't translate. I since updated the site, downloaded patched software and installed security updates and cleaned up the mess. Even Google captured the site being "owned" (google "jubilee holiness church").

If there are people wanting to do this to a small keep-to-themselves christian community then what kind of stuff does Skinner and the rest of the admins have to deal with when you have a site with way over 100,000 user registrations, and over 37,000,000 posts and who knows how many daily page views?

Its not people being funny. There are bots that basically locate forums of all kinds and start posting preprogrammed links/posts. Thats why a lot of sites started employing the "type what you see in the box below" kind of blocks, to (hopefully) force some human interaction.

As for the turkish hackers, its kinda related, as they basically have programs running that tests IP-adresses for weaknesses. And when they find one, they apprantly feel totally cool by hacking in and leaving their trademark front pages. It has happened to all kinds of sites.

So don't feel singled out. It wasn't personal. :)

But yeah - the pressure from stuff like that does def. not decrease when you have a popular site.

There were so many posters who seemed like "moles" that I ended up putting about 1,400 of them on "Ignore". All but 30 of them were die-hard Clinton-haters (the other 30 were extreme DLC fanatics that I put on Ignore last summer). The rest, sad to say, were the kind of Obama supporters I used to call "Obamanoids". The vast majority had fewer than 1,000 posts, and most of them probably had fewer than 500 posts.

So I'm conducting a little experiment: I just took everyone off ignore. It took about an hour and during that process I noticed several dozen had been tombstoned since I wiped their handles off my screen.

I'll be curious to see if with this fresh start there are any I'll put back on "Ignore". I suspect that may only happen with a small fraction of the 1,400 which should confirm my suspicion that most of them were freeper "moles" who came to DU to disrupt the primary discussions here, and who have since moved on.

Their privative software looks for a single IP address, ignoring
cookies. I'll admit, I have no idea how to set my computer to dynamic
IP mode. My 12 YO nephew did in a flash.
