I can't believe that Tim Russert has died. Unbelievable...
Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 09:27 PM by Blue_Roses
I've been gone all day and just got in to hear this news and I couldn't believe it.

For those of you who followed the primary returns faithfully after every state, do you remember in the last two primaries how Tim was saying maybe they should just stick to the issues and not so much of the "gotcha" moments this GE? I wish I could find that clip because when I heard him say that it was like something just washed over him. It was so refreshing to see him actually say this. I was looking forward to that from him and I was hoping he would set the bar for other journalists to "stick to the issues."

Wow...this is just stunning news.

EDITED TO ADD: I found a link to what I was asking. Here it is:

"Vigilance needed on campaign claims
Big issues, not smears, need to be the focus"

-snip-

Russert: That’s what we have to be conscious of and vigilant against, particularly at the end of the campaign as things are put out there. We’ve already had a few fake videos with different words dubbed in and people say, “This must be true because I saw it on the Internet.”

What we hope to do in this campaign is recognize there are big differences on big issues between John McCain and Barack Obama – the war in Iraq, Iran, Social Security, taxes. You don’t need to get into this other stuff. If it does surface, then I think the mainstream media has an obligation not to just instinctively put it out there without vetting it. Or, if it is something that is manufactured as a virus, report on that – who did it and why. But sometimes it’s very hard to trace it back to its original source.

1. He was a talking head with an opinion and not in our favor.
I understand it was a shock... but people die.

I've had much, much younger friends die below the age of 30 and quite frankly?

4,098 YOUNG American soldiers are dead tonight... for a LIE!! :grr:

And Russert help propagate the LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:nuke:

3. what a cold response.
while many us here will agree that Tim carried water for the GOP at times, there was still something--especially lately--that I saw in him that redefined itself.

Tim was far from evil. Give it a rest and go do something if you are gonna spew it...

11. Proof that "progressives" can be just
as insensitive, cold and unfeeling as any on the other side. Everytime a public figure dies we see the really ugly side of DU. :-(

...not that I know which ignored person it is - but every thread he/she/it posts gets the same reaction from people. Glad I can't read it.

Or don't want to....

Why they don't, after being on DU, is beyond me. :eyes:

24. You know, your posts aren't more credible the more CAPS YOU HAVE,
Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 10:09 PM by NYC Liberal
the more exclamation points you use (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), or the more smilies you use.

Also, he challenged both sides, not just one or the other. That's a good thing. Unless you think that anyone who asks tough questions of Democrats is a "hack"

2. Russert was one of the good ones - he offended and challenged both sides of the political spectrum
I will miss his perspective and his recalling of politicians prior talking points years later to bring than face to face with their previous statements.

I can't believe I heard that Timeh was gone....I always looked forward to Jason Linkins Sunday morning news pundit stories. I was not even forseeing this. I really am so sorry for Tim Russert and his family. RIP Tim. You pissed me off but I didn't want anything like this to happen......

6. I know how you feel
I've been out all day and when my husband logged on to the computer and told me Tim Russert was dead I thought he was joking. It just goes to show you never know when your time is coming. I'm not a big Tim Russert fan but my heart goes out to his family. What makes it so bad (as if it could be any worse) is that fathers day is this weekend, so sad.

17. That's what struck me, too ... and the fact that Big Russ outlived him
Here he was devoted to his dad and to his son and
he dies on the cusp of Fathers' Day ... I didn't
agree with his politics all the time but MTP WAS
appointment TV for me and I don't know who NBC
will get to replace him at this point. I just
feel terrible for his family and hope that they
take comfort in the fact that he touched the lives
of so many, myself included. RIP Tim.

14. That David Duke
interview was a thing of beauty. I just heard about this. He was a top-notch journalist. He was accused of carrying water for both sides of the aisle at times, and while I certainly didn't always agree with him, I always thought he was trying to be fair. As far as I'm concerned, he died with his integrity intact.
