Right plays ‘Kill the Witch’ with Barack Obama’s wife
From the article:

"REPUBLICANS believe that they have found a key to defeating Barack Obama by contrasting his wife Michelle, potentially America’s first black first lady, with Cindy, wife of John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee."

..."By contrast, Cindy McCain, 54, has been portrayed as a conventional adoring spouse in the mould of Nancy Reagan, whose eyes were devotedly fixed on President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s."

Article here - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article4138123.ece

Even the photos they chose to illustrate the two women are telling. Cindy McCain looks subdued (if slightly cross-eyed) while Michelle O. looks like she's MC'ing a block party.

Other DU'ers have their respective themes, but this one of the Republicans (with help from the media) trying their hardest to castigate Michelle for the crimes of being smart and independent while giving the thumbs up to Cindy for being quiet (and blonde on top of that) is one that I keep returning to. I don't think Republicans realize that there are lots of people of color in this country who won't stand for this and when you combine them with the number of white people who won't stand for it either, the chances of this being a losing strategy become that much greater.

1. Just cast McCain and the GOP as angry wife beaters. See what happens.

2. They better check Cindy's past before they go there
Especially the part about stealing drugs from a charity she was volunteering for. Also maybe they better got the whole story about John's first wife after Cindy started having an affair with him

8. That's the thing I don't get
Also maybe they better got the whole story about John's first wife after Cindy started having an affair with him

Somehow to some people, it is better to have a shrinking violet who's also a homewrecker (with help from the cheating husband of course) and quite a possibly a THIEF than to have a smart, capable woman who doesn't suffer fools lightly. I don't get it.

What in the world was Michelle THINKING when she became educated and chose to be a professional woman? How dare she not starve herself and focus only on her appearance so that she could snag a rich or potentially powerful husband? That woman's priorities are just alll screwed up!

3. Yeah, right...
Michelle is a self made woman, studious, degreed, very smart and obviously an accomplished woman.
CINDY LOU (that's right, look it up) is an heiress to a beer fortune.
I want to see this happen.

4. It will backfire
I really don't think close to half of America's women, including Republicans, aspire to some antiquated stereotype of a devoted, silly wife without her own opinions in grown-up company. At best that will play well with the fundies that wouldn't have voted for Obama anyway.

10. I would love to agree

But sometimes I wonder. The Republicans must believe that this level of attack will benefit them in some way. I can't understand how they came to this conclusion, but they obviously have.

For all we know, there may be millions of jealous, "bitter" women and their respective men-folk who are put off by women who've lived their lives by their own terms and had phenomenal success in the process. I've not heard of these untapped masses, but the Republicans must have because other-wise, this line of attack makes absolutely no sense at all.

5. lets see...
Michelle Obama is honest, a loving spouse, self-made, charming, and intelligent. Cindy Lou is a brain-dead former rodeo cheerleader, a thief, a recovering drug addict, a distrustful woman who made her fiance sign a pre-nuptial contract, a lazy heiress, and has the personality of a dead fish.

What was that Republican "kill the witch" plan again?

9. I don't think we should be too hard on Cindy...

...she has experience with special needs children. She probably spends hours every night explaining the big words to her husband.

11. They could be wrong
Michelle is a first wife and they have small children.

Madame McLame is a second wife who definitely hails from the elite.

That's worse than Paris Hilton. At least Paris did a little time behind bars for her offense. :eyes:

15. Michelle, like First Lady Hillary, will be forced into a sexist role by America
The same sexism that contributed to Clinton's defeat (and I am and have been an Obama supporter; that's why I said "contributed" rather than "led") will force Michelle to do what Hillary did in 1992: Win a bakeoff (Hillary won against Barbara Bush).

The US is still pretty backwards in a lot of ways. That's why Obama is running as a centrist.

16. People who were in favor of the attacks on
Hillary should NOT be complaining right now. Since when is it okay to
call one woman a witch and not to call another woman a witch? Since when?!?

We feminists TOLD YOU SO! An attack on a WOMAN is an attack on a WOMAN!
Attacking Michelle is just plain wrong.

See there!! I was a Hillary supporter and because I believe all should be
treated equally I condemn all attacks on Michelle Obama. It is just plain wrong.

People here need to insist on JUSTICE for every person or they look a lot like
hypocrites.
