Do we ever see any of those people interviewed outside, and identified as Democratic or anti war activists? Or do we just see a clip covering the interruptions?

I strongly suspect this is an operation by the GOP to try to paint McCain as standing up to these ne'er do wells who disrupt his speeches. He's practically a corpse when he gives speeches, and they need something other than his droning on to spice them up for TV news. I'm calling this one a dirty tricks operation by the GOP until it's proven otherwise.
