Michelle Obama in for 'Very Ugly Stuff', She's the New Woman Conservatives Love to Hate
....A Beautiful 'lady'

The conservative National Review recently showed a stern-faced Michelle Obama on its cover, under the headline, "Mrs. Grievance." The Tennessee Republican Party questioned her patriotism.

Michelle Obama has become a favorite target for critics, drawing many to compare her arrival on the national stage to Hillary Clinton's after she infuriated conservatives when she said, "I could have stayed home and baked cookies."

It's likely to get worse.

"It's going to be very ugly stuff," Democratic strategist Tad Devine said. "They're going to try to depict her as someone who is angry, outside the mainstream and not proud to be an American."

How did a 44-year-old Harvard Law School graduate become so demonized? One reason is the increasingly viral quality of the Internet.

"In an environment now that is increasingly polarizing and nasty, charges can be made, often unsubstantiated charges through the Web," said Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the Rothenberg Political Report. "We're in an environment now where being a first lady is a lot tougher job than it used to be."

Google "Michelle Obama" and the term "whitey" and you'll find conservative bloggers claiming a video shows her using the racially tinged term at Trinity Church. No tape has ever surfaced. But the claim helped prompt the Obama campaign to launch its own Web site, FighttheSmears.com.

Much of the criticism stems from Michelle Obama's artless statement early in the campaign that, "For the first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of my country."

Even John McCain, who was himself the target of a malicious smear campaign in the 2000 primary that claimed he had fathered an illegitimate child, when asked about attacks on her, said, "I've never met her, Mrs. Obama, she's a talented and a very effective person."

On "Good Morning America" recently, candidate Obama offered this warning: "These folks should lay off my wife, all right?"

The candidate was expected to offer a very different view of his wife, and his family, in a Father's Day speech in Chicago today, with wife Michelle at his side.

1. This just proves the republicans have nothing to offer
All they can do is personal attack, smear, rumor, that is all that is left to them.. headed for the trash heap of history till they can actually come up with something.. IMHO

5. And no courage to take on DEM candidates directly. Gutless creatures who go after spouses
Fucking pathetic wanna-bee bullies with no substance trying to hurt feelings and intimidate others to just not participate in the public arena.

They hate it when a DEM candidate actually dares to speak honestly. Honest appraisal of our situation exposes the GOP candidates for what they are: puppets of those who really do hate America and who really are destroying it, from the boardrooms.

11. No, not necessarily.
People believe all kinds of crap the press tells them, especially about presidents' wives because their hands are tied in defending themselves. Sometimes, fighting back just draws more attention to the crazy criticism.

It's a 'no-win' for many of them once the press turns on them.

23. Hillary Clinton herself needs to defend Michelle Obama.
Every Democrat - men and women - need to defend Michelle and everyone else attacked by the right-wing smear machine.

It's time for Americans to stand up and say that they won't listen to these lies anymore.

17. Yes, I would certainly hope
That she doesn't have to suffer the same indignities that Senator Clinton had to put up with. That would be tragic beyond belief. We have to hope that people (both men and women, because it has been my experience that women can be as cruel to other women as men, maybe even moreso) would rise above petty misogyny and realize greatness when they see it, no matter what the sex of the great one.
But, (sigh) that may not happen for a long time. I fear we have a long way to go as a country, in accepting women. Would that it were not so!

7. republicans don't realize the tide has turned
Nobody wants to read, hear about, or see these smears anymore. I predict republicans will continue with their ugly tactics but they will be all by themselves when they find the rest of the country pays them no mind.

22. The problem is that they pass their venom via emails and newsletters.
When they are using those routes, the only bulwark is a counter from someone that has access to the truth and the gumption to push back. Anyone that gets/sees such crap and doesn't respond is giving them a pass to continue.

Obama's effort will help on the macro level, but unless it comes from someone "in the loop", most will go on believing their "friend's" message.

13. Race and gender is going to be really big this time
Of course, it's always been part of their arsenal, but now it's the full kit. They've got nothing else to run on. Can't run on the wreckage and ruin they've caused. This will be an ugly, ugly season.

However, Michelle is as big as her husband, and she makes him look reedy. Plus, she really knows how to throw those looks. I'd like to see how many pundits manage to get fresh with her in person without going wobbly.

18. So many do.
And not just the GOP. I think it safe to assume that most people hate strong women. Don't you think so? I mean, think of all the hateful things said about Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, and others?
Tsk. It is just a crying shame, that is what it is. A crying shame.

Uh cough, cough: Pickles...

Seriously, who pays these guys? Couldn't he find the energy to make the very simple observation that Republican stepford wives get it easy while stronger more accomplished first ladies are attacked relentlessly by these pussy Republicans.

On top of that, she is tall, attractive, and intelligent.

She's a threat. Watch the sexism fly.
