And it was his remembering when John Kennedy came to Buffalo and how his father took him out to see Kennedy. It was a very touching story, because I don't think there has been a president since who's inspired so many people to do so much. I've always believed Kennedy was the last real president and what I would give to go back to that time and stand on the parade route. The feeling it must have been for my grandparents watching an Irish Roman Catholic so close to the presidency. Then I realize, I'm living it, but with a new face. Barack Obama is John Kennedy. He's drawing the crowds, he's inspiring millions of Americans and he's blazing his own trail, just like Kennedy did nearly 50 years ago.

Listening to Russert and his father talk about seeing Kennedy and the glee on their faces as they do it warms my heart. Because I know that's how so many Americans felt, including many in my family. For the first time ever, One of Us had a real chance at the presidency. And now, for a different group of Americans, they're re-living what my ancestors lived through so many years ago. It truly is an amazing and historical moment we're living in and I'm just so grateful to be here and to know, 50 years from now, I'll be talking about it with my grandkids. And hopefully with the same glee and excitement as Big Russ and Tim whenever they discussed John Kennedy's trip to Buffalo and his trailblazing campaign.

3. Joe Klein, god help me, said something great about just that
The last time I saw Tim on television was the night that Barack Obama secured the nomination — and he was, appropriately, telling a Big Russ story, about his dad nailing a John F. Kennedy sign on the side of the house in 1960. Tim asked, "'Why are we for Kennedy?' And my dad said, 'Because he's one of us.' And that's the big question Barack Obama is facing," he concluded, "Will Americans accept him as 'One of us.'" I remember thinking, "Ahh, Tim. We're getting old. Maybe Big Russ and my parents — and you and I — wonder if someone named Barack Obama is 'one of us,' but not our kids." I figured I'd mention it to him next time we talked. Now there won't be a next time. Time

6. I just saw the last 30 minutes of Bobby - I will try to catch it again.
I remember about 4 years ago I saw a documentary on Bobby Kennedy and when it went off all I could think to myself was "we were robbed of a great President ..."

5. I enjoyed that story too.......
and I also believe Kennedy was the last truly great President! He was a great inspiration to many and that's part of why he was such a good President.

7. Was it Russert who made the quip on Obama's last primary victory
to the effect "Wouldn't it be great to be teaching in an inner city classroom tomorrow morning and see the looks on the kids faces?"

Jon Stewart made fun of the remark (But then that is Stewart's job -- to poke fun)

But I thought it a preceptive remark.

9. He wanted to be teaching American history
or political science. It hit me where I lived. I wouldn't have thought of it, but I think he was right. It would have been an amazing place to be.
