My grandmother believed in change.

She kept quarters, 50-cent pieces and dollar pieces separately in brown Cremora jars all around the house. Most of the jars contained quarters.

As a kid I was fascinated by counting. On my visits to grandma, I would grab a jar and dump out the coins. I'd line them up in stacks of fours, then count each dollar stack as I put them back in the jar.

Back then a Twin pop and a 7-ounce soda cost 10 cents each. A bag of Wise potato chips (full of chips not air) cost 15 cents. I loved to count but the value of those jars was not lost on me. "Grandma! There's $125.00 in this jar!

I could not see through those dark plastic jars, so opening one and finding 50-cent or dollar pieces was a special treat. This was "the big change."

The little change added up to a lot. The big change, seen less often, added up to a lot more.

We're in a change election. Change you can believe in. Change, change, change, change, change.

So here I am...now a grandmother myself...still stacking and counting the change.
