Cindy McCain Stole Her Cookie Recipe Straight from the Hershey's Website!
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 03:08 PM by Stephanie

Oops! She did it again!

From the Family Circle "Presidential Cookie Bake-Off" - the candidates' spouses were asked for recipes for this cookie contest. Bill credited his recipe to the family cook, Michelle to the girls' godmother. And Cindy?

Originally for special occasions only, these butterscotch-chip-studded cookies are
now "an absolute must" whenever the whole family gets together, says Cindy.
The recipe came from a good friend.

Cindy McCain's Oatmeal-Butterscotch Cookies

Ingredients

3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) unsalted butter or margarine, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups rolled oats
1-2/3 cups butterscotch chips

Directions

1. Heat oven to 375 degree F.

2. In a large bowl beat the butter or margarine, granulated sugar and brown sugar together. Add the eggs and vanilla, beating well.

3. In a medium-size bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture; stir until blended. Stir in oats and butterscotch chips. Drop by tablespoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.

4. Bake at 375 degree F for 10 minutes, until the edges begin to brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Bloggers Find Something Fishy In McCain Site's 'Family Recipes'

By Michael D. Shear
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, April 16, 2008; Page A05

Ahh, the home cooking of Sen. John McCain's wife, Cindy. You can almost smell her Ahi tuna with Napa cabbage slaw or her rosemary chicken with warm spinach salad as you peruse the recipes on her husband's campaign Web site.
Or you could have, until yesterday, when that part of the site was taken down after bloggers revealed that several of the "McCain Family Recipes" were, in fact, copied word for word from the Food Network.

Cindy McCain's tuna recipe was actually developed and submitted to the Food Network by cookbook author and former "Cooking Thin" host Kathleen Daelemans. The recipe for farfalle pasta with turkey sausage, peas and mushrooms was a "quick pasta classic" from the TV show "Everyday Italian." That old McCain standby -- rosemary chicken -- was a creation of TV chef Rachael Ray and was lifted, with a few changes, from the same Food Network site.

All three were listed on a McCain Web page titled "Cindy's Recipes."

"Apparently a Web intern added Rachael Ray to our policy team without her knowing it," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds deadpanned yesterday. "He was swiftly dealt with, and the page is down for revision."

24. how many people actually create their own cookie recipes?
i'm going to give cindy a pass on this. people get baking recipes from a variety of sources - rarely does anyone know the original source. my kids would tell you that my recipe for chocolate chip cookies is the best recipe in the world, but if you looked at my hand scribbled recipe, you might notice that it is almost identical to the recipe printed on the back of a bag of nestlé chocolate chips.

32. Nah, hers was not scribbled anywhere. Look at the way the amounts are formatted.
She won't even name the "good friend" who gave her the recipe. Our Democrats both credit the source. Look at how the wording is identical except for the brand of chips and the last direction. When you are scribbling a recipe off a package you don't write all that stuff out.

You'd write 1 cup flour, 1 tsp. vanilla. Those qualifiers are revealing. It's clearly a cut and paste job.

Granulated sugar works differently from confectioner's sugar. Likewise, all-purpose flour and bread flour work differently in recipes, and you should specify which.

Did Michelle claim she made up her own recipe from scratch?

How many of us make cookies from recipes we created? I'm guessing very few. We might tweak a recipe already published somewhere, but I think few of us have the cooking know how to create one out of thin air.

This whole thing is very sexist. Neither of those women's cookie recipes should matter to anyone. We have big problems in this country- maybe you haven't noticed...

Cindy said she got hers from a "family friend." Her friend is named Hershey's Inc., apparently. I am not saying she should have created her own recipe, but to copy and paste a recipe from the Hershey's website and then say it is a family favorite gotten from a family friend is, well what would you call that, a LIE, I guess, is the correct term.

74. Because the repubs are trying their best to present Mrs. McCain as the perfect housewife
While simultaneously insinuating that Michelle Obama is some sort of America-hating anti-mom.

Does a stolen recipe matter in the grand scheme? Probably not. What does matter is the lying. This is the second time Ms. McCain has been caught lying about her culinary skills. The fact that with all her riches, she couldn't take the time to pay a professional baker to invent a unique recipe shows that team McCain, once again, JUST.DOESN'T.GET.IT.

It is a petty and shallow act by petty and shallow people.

And how it's a "family favorite" when it was CLEARLY just copy and pasted from the website. Who writes out "packed light" brown sugar when they give you a recipe? Who says to mix in a "large" bowl? Cut & paste job, clearly.

Mind you, I am a completely awful cook (I messed up cole slaw, for god's sake!), so I'm not entirely qualified to make these statements...

In any case, the order of indgredients are the same, the ingredients are the same (except that there's 1/12 of a cup fewer butterscotch chips - presumably Cindy stole them from the intended recipients of the cookies), and while the directions look different, they're actually saying the exact same thing - they're only very oddly rewritten, I think in an attempt to hide the source.

My best cole slaw recipe:

Mix shredded Napa cabbage (one head), carrots (2 or 3 large), and thinly sliced red onions (one medium, or less, to your taste) in a bowl. Make a dressing by mixing Newman's Own Balsamic Salad Dressing and mayonnaise (Hellmans!) to a creamy consistency. Pour dressing over the cabbage mix, sprinkle with salt & pepper to taste, toss, and refrigerate so the flavors can blend. Delish!

Hershey is a very politically active dog. He frequently pees on bushes, and last year, he went on Daily Kos http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/2/15/15158/3455/704/302356">protesting the Hershey Company's decision to lay off workers.

I confess that the dog in my signature is not mine. I found that picture on Picassa. I want to make an Obama bandana for Hershey so I can put his picture in my signature and on my dogs for Obama products, but the bandana I ordered for him has not arrived yet.

My dad said when he got home from his trip he would try to put an Obama button on Hershey's collar and take a picture. Hershey only has one eye now, due to cancer :(, but I think it will still look cute.

If any of you have CafePress accounts, can you please go to the forums and join my call for them to add dog bandanas as a product? The one I ordered for Hershey is just plain text and it's kind of lame. If CafePress offered bandanas I could make a much cooler one for Hershey.

Hershey's recipe calls for 1 3/4 cups of butterscotch chips (which equals one 11 oz package). "McCain's" recipe only 1 2/3 cups. That's over an ounce difference! What happens to that measly ounce left in the bag? I dare say, she keeps them for herself, popping them while her servant bakes the cookies.

And then he gave the cook's recipe. The cook is serving in Iraq now, to boot. That's an honest answer. Nobody expected him to create a recipe, and nobody expected Cindy or Michelle to. But lying about it, and saying it's the family favorite?

136. I don't see a problem with it
The contest asked for their "favorite cookie recipe", not an original recipe. I love to cook and bake, but have never created an original recipe. I frequently share recipes with friends and can't even remember where many of the recipes came from.

I'm no fan of Cindy McCain, but this really is a non-issue, imo.

142. This isn't the first year of a cookiegate
"Ever since voters began telling Teresa Heinz Kerry that they didn't think much of the pumpkin spice cookie recipe her office had submitted to Family Circle's presidential cookie bake-off, an aide said, Mrs. Heinz Kerry, the wife of the about-to-be Democratic nominee, has been thinking how she could tell America the truth: the recipe isn't hers.

In an interview on National Public Radio that was broadcast yesterday, the cookies came up in conversation and in the direct, unvarnished style that people have come to expect, Mrs. Heinz Kerry said: ''Somebody at my office gave that recipe out and, in fact, I think somebody really made it on purpose to give a nasty recipe. I never made pumpkin cookies; I don't like pumpkin spice cookies.'' Ever since voters began telling Teresa Heinz Kerry that they didn't think much of the pumpkin spice cookie recipe her office had submitted to Family Circle's presidential cookie bake-off, an aide said, Mrs. Heinz Kerry, the wife of the about-to-be Democratic nominee, has been thinking how she could tell America the truth: the recipe isn't hers.

{snip}
Mrs. Heinz Kerry said: ''Somebody at my office gave that recipe out and, in fact, I think somebody really made it on purpose to give a nasty recipe. I never made pumpkin cookies; I don't like pumpkin spice cookies.''

Mrs. Heinz Kerry had originally submitted a recipe called Yummy Wonders, but, according to Family Circle, its test kitchen said the recipe did not work. When the magazine called her press office and asked if there had been a mistake, the press office sent the pumpkin cookie recipe without consulting her, said her press secretary, Marla Romash."

Cookie sabotage!

Bank on it. But for Cindy? Who cares (yawn) that she lied (sigh) and got an intern (wouldn't you?) to copy and paste a recipe from a website (again! so who cares, so what!) and then described it as a "family favorite" from a "family friend" (a friend named Hershey's, Inc.!) (get a life!) (Republicans STEAL, that's what they DO, why bother reporting it???) in the magazine (who reads magazines!).

White House recipe for success Sun Jun 15, 4:02 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The heat is on, and the stakes are high, with the potential first ladies' bake-off underway and organizer Family Circle magazine looking to see which way the cookie is going to crumble.

In the past four presidential elections, readers of the magazine have successfully predicted who would be America's next first lady by favoring her recipe in the magazine's competition.

Something with chocolate has melted the hearts of readers in the last four elections. So both Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain might be taking a risk by eschewing everyone's favorite treat.

Instead, Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic Illinois Senator Barack Obama, has put forward a recipe for shortbread cookies with zest of lemon and orange, and a cheeky kick of almond liqueur Amaretto.

The recipe comes courtesy of Mama Kaye, the godmother of both her daughters, Sasha and Malia.

Cindy McCain, who earlier this year had to apologize for plagiarizing a recipe for passion fruit mousse from Food Network, went for oatmeal butterscotch cookies.

They are "an absolute must whenever the whole family gets together," says the multi-millionaire heiress to a large beer distribution firm, married to Republican presidential hopeful John McCain.

Readers can vote online at the magazine's website with the results to be published in mid-October, just ahead of the November 4 elections.

At the end of the week, Cindy McCain's recipe seemed to be slicing through the competition, with one online reader complaining that he had had to go out specially to buy Amaretto so his wife could bake Michelle Obama's treats.

If history is anything to go by, Obama might be in for a rough ride. In 2004, Teresa Heinz Kerry's pumpkin spice cookies failed to beat off the competition from Laura Bush's oatmeal chocolate chunk cookies.

221. If she came across as a slightly more glamorous Peggy Bundy, I'd agree.
But she's not a Peggy, she's a Marcie. She's a Marcie married to a Gladys Kravitz.

226. That's kind of what came to mind
It's sort of lowdown in an amusing way. If Family Circle asked me for my secret cookie recipe, it'd be: 1.) open frozen cookie dough package 2.) cut dough into slices 3.) bake until cookies turn black & begin to smoke (you're welcome to steal that recipe, by the way). That'd be too embarrassing to submit, though. At least Cindy McCain had the gumption & nerve to copy something from the back of the chocolate chips bag. You know the woman has never baked homemade cookies in her life.

220. Bless her heart, you know this isn't the real way she makes cookies.
The actual Cindy McCain method of baking cookies is to snap her fingers and shout "Concepción, go bake me some cookies!" Probably not the sort of thing they want to put in print.

The woman is more than a drug addict:

"But Cindy McCain wasn't just addicted to pain pills. She was investigated federally for stealing pain pills from a medical charity she headed and for having prescriptions filled in the names of the charity's employees."

234. Good point from miles120 there...
"There's something more important here than copyright infringement (although as an artist, I'm pretty sensitive about that.) The McCain's just don't get the idea of open information: all of his gaffes, her plagiarized recipes, past statements, freakshow opinions of endorsers, and past issue statements are readily accessible to anyone with a web browser. It's obvious that neither of them realizes where the world is today.

Hey, if John McCain can't grasp the idea of the internet, how is he going to lead us into the future? Gee, maybe he doesn't understand the current state of international relations, either."

Or indoor stoves for that matter.
She just orders takeout.

As in "Take me out, you old goat!"

Or "Take out is not McDonalds, you old goat!"

Or "Take your head out of your ass, old man, this is not take out! These are from the damned commissary up at Capitol Hill, aren't they?"

LoL
