I mean, I live in Western MA, how much more liberal can you get? And still I hear these dumb-ass repubs on LOCAL radio even-

Is it because of this?:

And if so, should DEMS be countering with some sort of organized call-ins as well?

1. Yeah, that's a very good reason why.
Even when Larry King had his radio show there were boiler rooms full of gop operatives waiting to jam his phone lines and fill the airwaves with rwing talking points.

2. It's the corporate advertisers and station owners.
Since deregulation, a lot of stations are owned by corporate chains, who use their stations to push a conservative message in the hopes that Repubs will lower their taxes.

Also, corporate sponsors push conservative hosts and refuse to buy time on liberal stations. Some of that may be pressure from conservative listeners, but more of it is the corporate advertisers. Remember how much trouble Air America had getting advertisers.

People like Limbaugh and O'Reilly don't cover the air waves because people want to hear them. They are everywhere because corporate radio and corporate sponsors push them, and people listen because they are the only ones on. Sure, they have a rabid fan base, but so do the liberals out there. It's the corporate fanbase that matters.

That's my theory, anyway.

4. Because showing an asshole on TV will draw an FCC fine.
Look at how they reacted to the brief showing of one booby.
;)

5. Neocons have pretty much taken over talk radio
Here in Philly we have three, count 'em THREE, conservative talk radio stations. Once in a while I listen for a minute and it gives me chills.
Liberals fell asleep on that one while the neocons moved in. Now we have outposts on satellite and internet radio.
