2. I'm guessing a woman
Kay Bailey Hutchison seems the most obvious.

She'd rather be governor of Texas though.

7. The only reason for that that I can see is that Kaine is a Catholic and a soft anti-abortionist.
('Soft' because he favours bans on late-term abortions, but has said he'd veto any bill to totally ban abortion in Virginia.)

swinging to McCain. He's firmly in the Dem column.

22. WSJ must have made a mistake.
Kaine was an early Obama supporter and has been mentioned as a possible VP pick for Obama, not McCain.

6. Let it be Mittens!1!!1!
Because, you know, McCain really needs to make sure he's got Utah in the bag.

This does kind of tell you how slim the field really is. But what about Liddy Dole? Or Huckabee? Or Lieberman? Or that pathetic little fuck from S. Carolina, what's-his-name?

32. it would be politically possible for Sen. McCain to chose any pro-choice V.P.
that rules out Joe Lieberman

And Sen. Lieberman as much as I despise him -- on most domestic issues is fairly consistently moderately liberal. He is kind of the inverse of Sen. Hagel.

That'll piss off the faithful if some turncoat-traitor who left the GOP becomes the VP nominee. :-)

swings both ways.

Whether either are true or not, the rethugs won't allow an unmarried VP on the ticket.

12. They are missing a lot of more likely candidates
As other have said, McCain might choose a woman. If that is the case, look for Palin from Alaska.

Others not mentioned:
Rob Portman - puts Ohio in the McCain column
Tom Ridge - possible puts Penn. in play.
Chris Cox - if McCain goes nuts and thinks he can take California

17. I thought about him, but what does he bring to the ticket?
MN doesn't have that many electoral votes when compared to Ohio or Penn.

While he'll appeal to McCain's base, there are other candidates that do the same thing and put states with more EC votes in play.

Also, I think Chris Cox is originally from MN, so he might also put MN in play.

Also, Ridge is apparently a no go because he is pro choice.

27. I'll put my money down on Pawlety
I think stubborn ole' McCain will pick someone who he feels is similar to him. I think he will resist pressure to appoint an archconversative like Brownback. My bet is Gov. Pawlety. 2nd choice is Romney, who has proven to be a loyal campaigner for McCain.

Most of the polls show Florida as a red state this year, so I am not sure Crist is needed.

28. Brownback looks the most Republicany....
Jindal: Never in his life, not for the xenophobic GOP.

Romney: Perhaps, but his hair is a little too pretty for the prettyhairophobic GOP.

Crist: I think it's just this picture, but he looks very weak, almost ill in this photo. If that was a Dem candidate, the GOPers would immediately wonder if he has AIDS.

Kaine: Is this what he looks like all the time? He looks like he's about 1/4 way through the Hulk transformation...close to Shrekish.

Wonder why I'm focusing on looks? Because appearances seem to drive so many of the GOP voters.

McCain can get away looking McCainish because He's A Goddamned War Hero.

It will be interesting who McCain drags along with him to defeat. I think Romney would be the best for the GOP because it would set Romney up for a strong run in 2012.

JMO, your mileage may vary.
