1. why is he preaching at a church? This should not be part of a campaign
for President. I wonder if the church could lose tax-free status?

6. I am concerned for the separation of Church and State.
Religion should not be in politics. That is what our country has stood for.

19. Oh for fuck's sake, stop this shit. How disingenuous can you possibly be? If you're
over 12 years old, you KNOW that politics, candidates, et al have been scrutinized for church/religion for decades.

Stop acting holier than thou and trying to disguise it as Concern. We know its hard, being that Hillary Lost, but it's fucking over.

4. Why would it when I've watched Dubya, Bill, Hillary, and a few other politicians in the pulpit?

And, I saw him preaching at the pulpit--that is where I got it.

And finally: I am doing nothing wrong.

9. as this is a "democratic" board
Discussion about the separation of church and state should be relevant to any discussion.

Your "concern" is improper.

13. I am deeply offended that you believe that YOUR beliefs are "true"
and mine are "suspect." I am not certain who made you the DU hall monitor, but I suggest you find something better to do.

And, in answer to your question: this is not "one incident" Obama has been courting the Evangelists lately in many ways.

15. And "evangelists" don't vote? You should just admit that you have
a personal bias, and move on. I'm not the DU Hall monitor, but I know b.s. when I see it.

23. Lots of people vote. Including racists, homophobics, and many many
others that do not share "democratic" values. His attempts to reach out to the George Bush Evangilists should be fodder on a democratic board.

You state that I have a personal bias--I see that your personal bias blinds you.

3. I wonder how difficult it will be for the Obamas to find a politically neutral, non controversial
and unoffensive church in DC or Chicago?

Inevitably, church will offend someone. Will their faith be vanilla enough to be non-confrontational?

10. The issue for me is not their church. Most politicians have a faith
and worship regularly. But, in a presidential campaign, I do not like the campaign preaching from the pulpit. I know he is attempting to gain those Evangelical voters who went with Bush in the past. But in doing so he is ignoring ME and those who have been faithful in believing that church is not a place for politics.

16. Perhaps the Problem is not Barack, Perhaps the Problem is you.
I watched Barack speak at that Church, even though the "country" was there because of the Camera's he was speaking to that congregation. I know some people don't want Barack to be the "black" Candidate, but he is, and he is the most influential black man in our countries history since Martin Luther King. People are listening to him, but he has to go to the people to make sure his message gets heard. Not every one has cable or internet. And black people do not traditionally go to Political rallies, but they do go to church.

Barack has to go talk to everyone, everywhere he can reach them. Did you complain when he spoke o the Jewish people? There are voters in Churches, the same as there are voters in stadiums. I am a strong believer in the separation of Church and State, but I don't see a conflict here. Now when he is President he makes decisions based on his faith then we have a problem. We already have a president who does that. For example, Abortion, shold not be a political issue, but it is made one not because of politics but because of religion. The same s true with stem cell research.

You may not like that he was speaking in a church Sunday, but I think his NOT speaking in churches is ignoring a huge block of people. It's hard to be all inclusive and not piss some people off, so instead of getting upset, just accept that voters are everywhere and Barack has to go where the voters are. So if you don't want to meet him in a church, just be patient, he will come to a you at some point, in a venue you will be most comfortable.

18. Excellent and "rational" post. Thanks Heather. Unfortunately, some
can't wait to pounce on anything Obama does because he wasn't their 1st choice. He wasn't mine either, but I sucked it up, and got behind the nominee. If people are looking for a reason not to vote for Obama, they should just be honest about that, and post elsewhere.

24. How offensive.
I am talking about Church and state, and you are suggesting my post has something to do with racism.

Very offensive.

In reaching to the George Bush evangilists, he may be isolating those who do not share those values that have been spouted for the last 7 years. Values like homophobia, racism, the constitution, right to life, etc.
