When Bill Clinton dies, the news media will put the Lewinsky |
|
story in the lead paragraph. They will do this because he is a public man and his public life is fair to be reported as well as critiqued. This will happen with the sure knowledge that Chelsea Clinton will invariably be exposed to the reliving of the impeachment controversy. Russert is a public man as well. The NBC memorials have not limited themselves to discussions of his strong family life and personal relationships. They have included heavy doses of praise for his fairness and accuracy. There are many of us who believe that this is an extremely erroneous description. We are entitled to express our opinions. And just like the news people who will lead Clinton's obituary with references to his scandals, we, who are critics of Russert, are not obligated to observe a waiting period to present critical comments about a public man who wielded significant influence on US policy and journalistic mores.

4. The press hated Nixon but were very respectful when he died. |
|
The press were pretty fond of Big Dawg and likely still are.
Thanks for your concern, but I don't think it's necessary.

edit to add - they had been downsized & corporatized by then. Many were looking to getting ahead in the corporation, not getting a story. I was always amazed by Nixon's resurrection to the status of elder statesman by the press. Took me a long time to realize why.

5. No, they'll focus on what a gifted politician he was, and what he accomplished |
|
in the WH. They will only talk about it in vague terms -- "he was a flawed man with a big heart and a brilliant mind".
And, despite my problems with Bill, I will also not be bringing up the "stuff" on the day he dies (which hopefully will be WAY WAY WAY off in the future when he is a very old man).

10. I don't feel the least bit bad about my post although yours |

may have been better. We both were adding some perspective about the timing of critical comments. Some people get it, some don't. For those that think that the coverage of Nixon was devoid of Watergate references, I would suggest they go to the WAPO archives and note that in the first graph is a reference to his resignation in disgrace. Anybody that thinks that Bill's impeachment won't be in the lead has a more optimistic view of the media than I have.
