I'm walking on eggshells here, people! However, if I serve brownies to GDP - delicious fudge brownies like these:

Will that earn me brownie points?

74. Think of it as the last bit of shittiness that the disruptor gets to leave behind.
The reason for gravedancing is that the disruptors fuck the place up and people are glad to see them taken away. In the long run the place becomes less shitty.

34. Interesting. And quite hypocritical...
...considering that the tombstoned have in 99% of the cases roundly deserved it because they were disruptors, dead-end griefers and trolls.

The fact that most of those were supporters of the candidate who did not win and continued to act out EVEN AFTER they were told what would happen should the sniping, flame-baiting and passive-aggressive shilling for McCain continue seems to be what bothers you here. So you of course BEG for those who remain, are pleased with the clean-up and supported the candidate you DIDN'T want, to be tombstoned. How surprising.

Not.

Folks like Writer have nothing to worry about as he's not been a troll or worked against the presumptive nominee which goes against the rules of this site.

Want “less” grave-dancing? Tell your pals to be civil and stop with the silly, unhelpful, interparty jail-shanking.

27. You'll note that many of the long-timers are keeping a low profile
The crushing orthodoxy is rather disturbing.

One of the more telling moments of late was when Obama spoke to AIPAC: there were many threads mitigating this, explaining it, supporting it, and all that, and they stayed put. The one thread (by an Obama supporter who underlined that fact) that thought it was a bad idea was IMMEDIATELY exiled to the Mid-East forum to languish largely unseen. It was a big issue.

It's a very interesting predicament, but many choose not to enter into discussion about it for fear of being banished by the faithful. The use of the "alert" button to quash opinions that one doesn't like but that are within the spirit and letter of the rules is an abuse, but it's one that's being routinely done.

There's a huge difference between slagging the nominee to hurt the party's chances and dissenting to dangerous missteps.

The self-congratulatory echo-chamber effect is fun for those who feel powerless and lost in a sea of conservatives, but it's not going to help us win. THAT takes perspicacity, not the reveling in ignoring everything that doesn't support one's stance. The proclivity of many of the extremist Obama supporters to blithely ignore anything that doesn't fit their worldview is not just irritating, it's scary. I don't want to lose in November, and many things coming out of the mouths of the triumphalists play into the hands of our very skilled and driven enemies.

It's certainly not the home it has been for the last seven years, but like many of the stalwarts, I'm confident that things will return to a less strident and party-line enforced place than it is at the moment. Then again, who knows?

54. as a long time member, I fully agree with your post and have noticed the same.
there are about 30 or 40 long time members I know by name recognition and largely they pop up only occasionally in topic forums or the lounge. These are DUers who have been here through two brutal primary seasons and really fear getting TS'd. I sit thinking about all possible angles my point might be taken before I hit "post" these days...it's wearying and a waste of energy.

The most disgusting thing I've witnessed lately is the common meme that Kucinich cares about impeachment only as far as it will help his political aspirations. All of this "now is not the time" bullshit, that supporting impeachment efforts is contrary to Obama's campaign. Ughh.

58. I agree absolutely. It seems the ignorance of any point of view other than positive reinforcement of...
one's own is dangerous. No candidate or campaign is perfect. Discussion of campaign "missteps" is permitted yet many are "afraid to post" for fear of either "insult" or "tombstoning". Ironically, while some scream the "primary is over" and use that fact as a cudgel to beat any dissent over the head, they have no problem with rehashing the fact that many loyal DUers supported other candidates than the nominee originally. That fact is obvious even in this thread. It is very sad indeed that some do not see DU as a vehicle for the expression of complex ideas and would reduce us to the equivalent of "yes men" with nothing constructive to offer to the nominee.

65. The extremists of the Obama camp are worse than the Clarkies of old, who were worse than the Deanies
Many people are trying to be good citizens, but there are issues that bear being raised. Some of the sanctimony and blind serial ignoring of people and of pitfalls and missteps are quite startling.

Much as I consider him a dicey candidate, he's the guy, and it's our job to secure a victory. This is NOT going to be done by blind faith and giddy exuberance; the only people who will be swayed by the cult of personality and the dazzling quintessence of this person long since have been, and those who persist in that kind of approach do us no good at all.

There seems to be more of an air of rationality creeping in of late, but that may just be my inherent optimism clouding things again.

The most ridiculous instance I had of late was having a satirical song thread instantly locked because the Mod said it was impossible to ignore alerts, and those who disliked the spirit of the thread wanted to shout it out of existence. I feel for the Mod in that instance: it must have been tiresome to have to endure a tsunami of rage because some spaz posted a cheeky bit of ridicule. (That's actually sincere: I don't think the Mod really wanted to kill it, he/she was just plagued by shrieks of indignation from the self-proclaimed virtue phalanx, and short of wanting to appease them with my cyberscalp, did me the favor of merely letting it wash away.)

Still, it was a mighty fun little song...

And let me remind you that you don't have to be a Clinton supporter to incur their anger and become a target.

53. that's just really sad but it's kinda true...
these days, all you need for a granite cookie is to type something that sets off an angry mob, BAM you get enough alerts, and you're out.

It's not the fault of the mods. They are only doing their jobs, but the truth of the matter is there are enough clever people here of all opinions that you can successfully argue that SOME point, each and every one of us:

1. Has not "supported" the nominee in some way (maybe we just didn't like the color of his tie one day; that's enough to set some off)

2. Has been a "racist" or a "sexist" or a "troll" or a "neofeminist" or a "paleofeminist" or a "misogynist" or a "corporatist" or a "treehugger" or an "elitist" you get the point...

3. That the ONLY reason we have anything contrary to prevalent opinion is because "our nominee" didn't win, which is DU Codespeak for "you are a bunch of Hillarybot sore losers" even if Clinton was NOT our top choice!

4. The only OTHER reason we have anything contrary to some notion of status quo opinion is because we are rehashing "primary wars" or are "baiting"

5. are so eeeevil and wrong that we apparently think puppy stomping is a fun Saturday night!

THINK before you PM your entire friends list and get the ALERT button all fired up, PLEASE. Ask yourself, how would I treat this person in real life? If you can imagine having a friendship with this person, IE, you're on the same page about most things but there is just that one little issue you are passionately at odds about, don't alert on every post that rubs you the wrong way. Now, if you couldn't stand to be in the same room as that person for 5 minutes, alert away.

It is my opinion that anything truly heinous and disgusting should stand on its own so that people can see that your opinion of that person is correct. The only posts I alert on are from obvious trolls/Freepers. The rare occasion that I alert on a full member is when that member has gotten abusive with posters in a discussion, but I never alert purely because I disagree.

i've never seen anyone tombstoned without them really going off the deep end
with something fairly over the top, either in one post, or series of posts before it happens.

the idea that someone here for 5 years would get banned simply for saying they didn't like the way the nominee did X is ridiculous, that's not what's been happening.

Tell me, what do you think is more offensive and more damaging to the Democratic Party overall, as an attack on a Democratic leader?

Suggesting Obama suffers from hubris, and calling him "Saint Obama"? (I haven't seen him called that, btw, but I'll take your word for it.)

Or accusing a former president and a former First Lady and current US senator of being homicidal, and calling them creatures from the black lagoon?

Seriously, what do you consider the nastier comments?

the rules against re-fighting the primaries only go one way it seems. It's so fucking insane that if somebody attacks Clinton and I defend her, a posse jumps on ME for trying to re-fight the primaries.

There's no rule against defending democrats. In fact, there are rules against ATTACKING democrats, but they're ignored.

I had one asshole say I was going to be banned because I had a Clinton avatar - an avatar provided by the administrators.

56. Agreed. If they won't move forward, get them outta the way. If they can't do that,
it's time to make them.

47. Since you're offering... could you bring me a glass of milk too? Yum!
I don't care about the trolls - that is up to the mods. I just alert when I see them and that's all you can do. There are still a couple stumbling about, but many of the worst offenders are gone.

57. You know what goes really good with (special) brownies?
Red wine. Preferably merlot.

Man, no one would get tombstoned around here if we had (special) brownies and red, red wine for everyone.
