MSNBC trashing MoveOn's new ad and shamelessly supporting McCain's 100 yr occupation of Iraq.
Chuckie Todd is even now calling the MoveOn ad shameless and saying it will backfire. Guess he's from the same planet as John McCain to think you can occupy a country for 10 years--let alone 100--without casualties.

I am so sick of the media defending John McCain on this. Mika was the first to jump on the ad and defend McCain, altho Joe said using McCain's "100 yrs. in Iraq" was perfectly legitimate in politics.

2. No, it was a crappy, wrong-thinking ad...

Nobody likes to see infants being used. When you already like the message, it might not bother you as much. But the point of an ad is to sway people who are on the fence.

Moveon.org tends to beat people over the head with a hammer. There may be a time to do that, but this is too early. They should have waited for the Republicans to launch the first smear ad of the season and *then* responded. As Obama said, "When they pull out a knife, we pull out a gun."

That ad will not convince anyone of anything. It can only annoy people who are not already decided.

I don't think there will be a whole lot of "backlash," as the commentators said there might be, but there will be some. What's worse is that it sets the republicans up to launch a smear and say, "They did it first, we're just defending ourselves in kind."

Mostly, it was just a big waste of money. And yes, the production quality of the ad really did suck.

I hope these 527 groups get it together better than this. I'd rather see Obama win *with* them instead of in spite of them.

7. Don't always like MoveOn ads, but if McCain is elected, this baby could be forced to serve
in a 100 year occupation of Iraq--an occupation in which there are no casualities. How naive is that!

Using the baby did not offend me. John McCain's endless occupation of Iraq is what offends me.

John Ridley first said the ad was powerful, then felt obligated to trash it with his fellow Morning Jokesters who have knowingly and eagerly set the table for the Republicans to trash it.

13. I totally disagree
Not only did I like the ad, I feel the same way. Only difference is it's my grandsons. I will not let this war have them, even if I have to move to another country to save them. They will not be used by some insane politician as killing machines.

19. Yes, but the ad isn't aimed at you...

...You're already on-board, like most of the people posting here, who are loving this ad.

The fact that it appeals to people who are so against the war is an indicator that it's missing the mark of people who are on the fence. It appeals to people who are already angry about the war. But the true target audience -- people who aren't already going to vote for Obama, will not see it in the same light.

Anyway, I can see that lots of people disagree with me on this. We'll see how the ad gets received when it plays. I don't think it will be a very big deal, but I don't think it will help Obama. I'd love to be proven wrong.

4. The criticism was leveled at 1) The poor production quality 2) The use of an infant in
the ad ("John McCain, you can't have Alex") and 3) The premise that McCain said we'd be in Iraq for 100 years.

5. I'd also add the "over-the-top" tag line...

Waving the baby in front of the camera and saying, "Well, John McCain, you can't have him."

Again, while I agree with the sentiment, the implication is that John McCain is trying to steal your babies. It feels good to people who stand firm against the war, but it is not a persuasive way to get votes from people who are on the fence. It's off-putting, and the real message will be lost.

Waving babies around to make your point is just not a great idea in general.

8. I just watched the ad again, and she didn't wave the baby in front of the camera.. LOL.. this is
typical of what the MSM does. I kept hearing them say "waving the baby around" on teevee, and even tho I watched the damned ad, I had it in my mind that the woman had actually waved the baby in front of the camera !!

Say something enough, it becomes true. Wow, they're good at what they do.. disinform.

11. John Ridley first said this poorly produced ad was powerful before he got the message from his
fellow Morning Jokesters to trash it.

The MoveOn ad may well not have been professionally produced. MoveOn invites anyone to make an ad and email it in.

The ad does not offend me. John McCain's endless occupation of Iraq is what offends me.

14. Interesting about Ridley... sheesh.. they DO coordinate their "framing" don't they? I heard
Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell BOTH say off the cuff remarks during the Russert coverage about how Russert would call them in and they'd discuss "how to frame things" for the day, what stories to push, etc. I wonder who is framing now..

6. Here is the ad

Not Alex

The media can stir up a fake controversy by harping on it. Feigned outrage = backfire.

It's no surprise that they are falling all over themselves to protect McCain's honor when he is the one who proposed staying in Iraq for 100 years. Funny, they said nothing about McCain's 3 a.m. ad.

9. Thanks for posting this link. I watched again.. and the more I see it, the more I like it.. I think
it's backlash against the shills on Morning Ho telling me I shouldn't like it. :-)

10. Dickhead Joe likened the ad to a movie where a bad guy used a baby to catch a bullet.
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 08:15 AM by sparosnare
That whole segment was terrible; I think it was indicative of the MSMs hatred of MoveOn rather than the actual content of the ad.

On a better note; Todd commented that the Republicans can't raise money for their independent action groups. Ha.

16. I like this ad. It is obviously non professional, but it is the fact that it is not professional
that makes its strength. Assuming that the woman is actually the mother of the kid, I find it a powerful ad.

17. haha, now Contessa Brewer is going all Negative Nancy on the Gore endorement,
and trying to sell that Gore reminding people "what might have been" had he been elected instead of George Bush, runs counter to Obama's message of looking foward.

18. They're corporate GE whores. Defending war is what they're paid to do.
MSNGE employs a lot of young faces. And I'm betting those young faces have babies like Alex at home. Maybe those shilling for war want to offer their babies to McCain. If not, they should STFU.

20. how could they call it shameless yet the 3am telephone ads were fair game in their book? What I
like about the ad is that it was explicit. All of us who have children worry about this if McCain were to become president. Chuck Todd is showing his true colors.
