Gore Endorsement Of Obama Grabs Big Headlines In Michigan

Gore Endorsement Of Obama Grabs Big Headlines In Michigan

By Greg Sargent - June 17, 2008, 10:06AM

The Gore event yesterday gives Obama exactly the headlines he wanted today in the Detroit papers...

Obama has edged into a lead in http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/polltracker/mipres/">polls of the crucial state, now that he's started to campaign there in earnest.

2. Gore gave a terrific speech last night! He sounded excited, determined and strong.
Thank you, Al Gore!
Every time I see him, especially in a purely political setting, I think, "This is the man who was elected President
of the United States and had it stolen from under his feet."

Still unbelievable, all these years later.

4. Seeing Gore was a HUGE surprise...
I had no clue he was going to be there because I was pratically in line all day. When he came out, I was screaming rather heavily. Pretty much everyone went nuts.

It was a small chant in our section saying "You were robbed!". There was one lone protester outside. She was a pro-lifer with some pretty vile posters.

All in all, it was an amazing experience. Great fiery speech by Granholm, AMAZING speech by Gore and an electrifying speech by President Obama.

15. It was so great to see the reaction
of the people that were not expecting to see Gore. We had a couple of women near us that I though were going to need oxygen. I heard the announcement right before I left my house, but I figured a lot of people would already be in line and might not hear it. It was obvious from the noise in the Joe that many people were surprised. Fiery, amazing, electrifying--I agree with all your adjectives.

And welcome to DU! :hi:

6. Wow - that's great! Most papers focused on Tiger's win today...
I was disappointed at the lack of coverage re Gore and Obama.

14. He is so much more closely identified with environmentalism now...
and, as per the folks that keep electing John Dingall, it's not so popular or important among a lot of independent and cross-over voters.

13. The Detroit News never seems to disappoint its corporatist. right-wing roots.
It's always remarkable to me how two newspapers with such close ties can so perpetually reflect differing editorial political perspectives. The News is consistent in always injecting snark ... "vows" "revival" "dazzle" "stoked" ... I guess they like the metaphor of a Tent Evangelist ... the Traveling Preacher. The Free Press is virtually unalloyed in its reportage, using terms that reflect the positive attitudes of the attendees and majority of its readership.

Traditionally, the News was the afternooon paper and the Free Press was the morning paper. The News was the mouthpiece of the automaker management while the Free Press was more allied with organized labor (UAW).
