Any thoughts on what Obama can do to pull away from Mcbush in the polls?
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 11:08 AM by RMP2008
New ABC/WP poll out and it's 49-45 among RV's and 48-42% among adults for Senator Obama.

Link is at http://www.realclearpolitics.com

These numbers are to be completely honest a bit disheartening. I was hoping for a 10-15% Obama lead by now. The fact that Senator Obama has a big lead in Ohio in a new poll just released kind of counterbalanced my depression about this poll. I'd take being up 11 in Ohio over having just a 4 point national lead any day. However, what concerns me is that if Obama is only up 4 points now, he's going to enter the fall campaign significantly behind Senator Mccain because Mccain's convention goes last and Mccain will get a big bounce out of it and start off the fall up big with Senator Obama needing like Senator Kerry and VP Gore did in 2004 and 2000 a knock-out debate performance to get back in the game.

I don't want to go through that again.

Obama needs to build up a 10-12 point lead before the convention and the VP pick. Then the VP pick/convention would get him up to maybe a 18 point national lead. The best that McBuah could hope for then is to bring the polls back into a dead heat via his convention. I'd feel very comfortable with tbat. I don't want to start off the fall campaign 7-10 points behind after the RNC, however, praying for a GOP debate debacle for the third cycle in a row. Historical examples of this is that Shrub had significant national leads after the 2000 and 2004 RNC's.

To prevent that, Senator Obama needs to build a strong lead now that the DNC and VP pick can solidfy and that the RNC won't be able to cut into. What would you advise Obama to do now to get this kind of lead that the RNC won't be able to erase?

1. He has little experience and he is black
However Obama should be able to walk all over McCain.

If he can't, well, America deserves what it gets.

2. Keep making major policy speeches
especially on the economy--how he is cutting taxes on the poor folks and hitting corporations and the rich. A comparison of who benefits from the Obama and McCain plans, like they had on CNN of all places, would be most beneficial.

Also, around here all I've seen are McCain ads on TV. I did see an Obama banner ad on my yahoo mail, though. Good targeting of the online audience, but we mustn't neglect those who only watch the boob tube.

12. And get those speeches on TV.
I'm convinced that the more Obama shows up on the rube-tube the more white suburbia is going to warm up to him and vote for change.

3. I get emails every day trying to get me involved and I would be if I wasn't
moving next month. I've already been visited twice by DNC fundraisers and I'm sure I'll be seeing more.
They are doing a LOT, that's not getting reported. Get involved, it will make you feel more positive, more
a part of it. Go to Obama's website and volunteer.

Pull a giant blown up version of that graph out on national television, and spend about 5 minutes explaining what it means to people and making sure they understand that that isn't his graph that he had his own people make up, that's an independent study of their tax plans and their effects.

Game over. McCain isn't winning the election with that "I make over $3M a year" demographic.

8. For some reason, even the brightest Americans buy into the Repug talking point
that Democrats are "tax and spend liberals." This is the one issue that Obama needs to continue to hammer away on. I simply don't understand why people keep buying into this shit when the Bush tax policies has created record deficits, not economic growth. Much of this is the media's fault because it continues to allow McSame to get away with making false assertions that Obama will raise taxes on every single American. That is simply untrue and Obama needs to continue to debunk this myth. He needs to put out ads or something on this very issue.

If we allow the Repugs to get away with continuing to perpetuate the lie of the "tax and spend liberal" and the Pelosi Premium, we are doomed. We MUST address it and address it head on. We need to somehow force the media to do its damn job!!

13. Great minds, indeed! His economic speech in Flint was fantastic, by the way.
How much of that speech did the media cover? If they did, we would have seen some very specific policy tools that Obama has presented on his tax and economic plans. I loved it when he asked people to raise their hands if they make $2 million. Everyone laughed. He should inject humor when needed and bring the conversation down to a level that is not too complicated or nuanced for the average American to understood. This has helped the Republicans win elections: the fact that they are able to get away with soundbites, not because they are honest, but because they are easy to understand. It's much easier to understand "tax and spend liberal" than it is to explain that if you are a senior and you make less than $50,000, your taxes will be cut $1,000. For some reason, the "tax and spend liberal" moniker resonates with average Americans even though that lie has been peddled by Repugs for years and yet we are in a worse economic situation.

By the way, I get my $600 rebate next week. It's such a sham, but I'll use that to pay for bills.

14. Not much
I think it's safe to remember a lot of Americans are paying no attention to the campaign right now. It's still pretty far off and the start of the summer. For a lot of people the last time they listen to the candidates was March or Feb when their state had their primary. They aren't really going to tune in again until after the conventions.

Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 12:37 PM by loyalsister
will make a huge difference. The comparison between Kennedy and Nixon was between a "bright, young man whose attractiveness brought people into future and a repellent ogre who admittedly had a good command of the facts."
Obama's appearance has "coolness" to appeal to youth and he comes across as simply a nice person to others.
Regardless in terms of appearance Obama has McCain beat and I think that debates or joint appearances should work in Obama's favor. Picking that bump up closer to the election will be the best time, IMO

He will pick up his strongest momentum when it counts.

We don't want to give them time to erase momentum or work out a strategy such as the one you are suggesting we try to negotiate here.

17. Easy, Support Big Media Consolidation
The Democrats are always getting thrashed by the MSM, particularly News Corp and Disney, because of their opposition to big media mergers. If Obama promises to appoint a pro-big media commissioner to the FCC, the Democrats will win a landslide.

19. affirmative action
another idea is for obama to make a major speech on race where he says, since he has attained the nomination for president, that we must finally become a truly color blind society and end govt affirmative action. mccain has sided with us on several major issues, gore even praised him last night on the climate. obama has to take some issue and and break out of the liberal corner he might become trapped in.

23. i disagree
mccain hasnt said anything about affirmative action and until today he opposed new drilling. he has jumped on the drilling bandwagon because a large majority now favor it. i dont see what the problem is. if it helps, it helps, if it doesnt then it just shows the idea was wrong.

and wasnt it MLK JR who said we should judge a person by the content of their character, not the color of their skin?

the question was asked how obama can pull away from mccain. so far, no one has come up with anything substantive.

25. The one thing that I can think of
is that the convention is enormously successful. That's probably the most realistic thing. Basically, the goal of this post is to brainstorm ways that we can prevent Mccain from taking the lead after the RNC and to prevent the debates from being make or break for us again.

Uhh, wtf does that have to do w/ anything.

"the question was asked how obama can pull away.."

It's an idiotic question and your suggestions are even more idiotic. He's already pulling away. He doesn't need to adopt Republican positions.

Your "concern" is noted, Einstein.

not only that, but LIBERALS support new drilling 46-37%. we are on the wrong side of public outrage on this issue. there are 2 issues i care about, getting out of iraq and stopping mccain from nominating judges, everything else to me is open for discussion. drilling would have been a great issue for obama to outflank mccain on.

if he was way ahead then every little valley would launch a thousand 'he can't close the deal' comments.

Its better that he is a little bit ahead and grows steadily than yo yo up and down.

Beyond the number is the level of enthusiasm. McCain's numbers are soft and Obama's are firm.
