North Carolina Poll: McIdiot (45) Obama (41)
Raleigh, NC – After solidifying the Democratic nomination for President, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has pulled to within four points of Republican nominee Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in North Carolina according to the Civitas Institute’s June DecisionMaker poll results released today.

Among all voters, Sen. McCain leads Sen. Obama 45-41, a net pickup of one point over last month’s poll which had McCain leading 44-39. Libertarian Party nominee Bob Barr, included for the first time in this month’s poll, received two percent support. Twelve percent were undecided.

“Both Senator McCain and Senator Obama improved their numbers over last month by solidifying the support of their party’s base voters,” said Francis DeLuca, Executive Director of the Civitas Institute. “Obama increased his support among Democrats by five percent, while McCain increased his support among Republicans by three percent.”

Obama is still struggling to connect with white voters, garnering only 31% of their votes, although that is an improvement over May’s poll which had him at 27% among whites. Obama is receiving 87% of support of African-American voters.

Previous Civitas Poll results:
February – McCain 46, Obama 36
April – McCain 48, Obama 39
May – McCain 44, Obama 39

5. It's not a tossup if there is HIGH black, Hispanic, and YOUNG voters!
NC demographics this year are not the same as it was in 2000 or 2004. The Research Triangle will show up and the youngsters will surprise all of us.

OBAMA WILL WIN NORTH CAROLINA!! Mark my words! :)

10. I think there is a good chance
but I always hesitate because my first campaign experience was working for Harvey Gantt against Jesse Helms in 1990. I know the demographics have changed a bunch since then, but that experience scarred me.

4. The campaign is working hard. This state is a tough nut to crack, believe me!
Clinton lost here both times, ya know....

Please move here and join the growing progressive community.
Someone needs to take my place. ;-)

I will have the pleasure of taking on the red state of GA this fall. Sigh.

9. Yes I believe it.
Older AA military veterans for example.

I work with Customs Officers and there are several who were in the military for 20 years and are completely 'brained washed' about everything military and support the most macho candidate regardless of party.

87% of any demographic group is huge.

11. Nope! My uncle was in Air Force 26 yrs and has always voted Republican..
HOWEVER he is not this time! He is going to vote for Obama. Oh and my uncle is African American. I argued with my uncle non-stop about Bush! I could not believe he would defend him. However, even he gave up on Bush. He said that man has ruined this country. I felt like telling him that he helped him do it by voting for him!

16. yes there are many more like your uncle but there are still
some 'dead enders'. The really sad things about these guys is that they go out of their way to bash Obama in front of their colleagues.

Obviously Obama is going to do very very well with AA in North Carolina but given the relatively high number of older veterans you cannot expect it to be over 90%.

14. I have military family in NC and my brother was there in the Army. They tell me...
that very few are voting for McSame even though there is some military brainwashing, and there are some black conservatives who are religious fundamentalists who's only concern is gay marriage who will vote for Repugs on that one issue. But I find it hard to believe that here we have a viable black candidate for which a good percentage of black voters will ignore and opt for McSame instead? Also, many blacks in the military--even though some officers typically vote Repug--are disillusioned with Iraq and don't agree with an attack on Iran, will not support McSame.

If the political conditions were different for any other election year, then I would agree with these polls. But I refuse to believe that the election is this close. There's an issue with how the surveys are conducted that cannot account for data selection errors and other statistical blunders. The polls also don't factor in the influence of new voters, turnout, or the Bob Barr-Ron Paul factor.

McSame has many more problems than Obama, but these polls are only focusing on the challenges that Obama faces. Why is that? I think it is because the pollsters want to keep this race going and want to keep it close.

I'm not suggesting that it's going to be easy, but I do find it interesting that the media is loathed to address McSame's shortcomings and there is a concerted effort to demoralize Democratic voters.

We have work to do but I still don't think this election is as close as they are painting it out to be.

12. Does anyone ever poll Tennessee?
I haven't found a poll in months and, despite the fact that Obama is doing well in the rest of the South, all the EC maps keep showing TN firmly in red.

Looking at the figures coming out of NC, VA and GA, I'm betting TN is a bit less red than they're taking for granted.

13. "struggling to connect with white voters"?
Noooooooooo.

He's struggling to connect with Confederate sympathizer white voters. As in the ones who'll never vote for . . . "them" . . . even if it means they remain jobless, their kids die in useless oil invasions, gas stays at 4 bucks a gallon and America never progresses.

People who DON'T still think it's 1956 (or 1856, for that matter) see the next President.
