Should Cindy McCain's Brain Damage Be A Campaign Issue?
By palmbeachmaven - February 24, 2008, 2:16PM

I don't know whether Americans care if the First Lady is mentally disabled - that's a question for McCain's pollsters.
What I want to know is why McCain would even subject his poor wife to the rigors of a presidential campaign and worldwide scrutiny in the first place. The question speaks directly to McCain's personal cruelty and unbridled ambition.

Although the true extent of the brain damage has not been publicly disclosed, Cindy McCain's 2004 stroke is not a secret.

In a very flattering September 2007 interview in <i>More</i>, Paul Alexander wrote about the stroke damage:

"In conversation, she will occasionally have trouble remembering certain facts, especially from the recent past, and if you look closely you realize she cannot make her right hand into a complete fist, which has affected her handwriting, if not her ability to grasp a gearshift knob. "It's not bad," she says, describing the damage to her hand. "I can function. I have short-term memory loss. I can remember all the major details of my life, but I sometimes can't remember what happened last week."

I suspect that John McCain, viewed his wife's stroke more in terms of how it would affect his bid for the presidency than else.

From a January 2005 Larry King show:

"MCCAIN: I was the one at home that everyone came to to program their computers, fix their phones, do anything electrical, technical, anything on the computer. I can't get near it now. I'm overwhelmed by it.

And it's weird for me. And I might also say, I suffer from migraines also. And your last caller that called in -- and I just had an episode about a week and a half ago, where I didn't know, I thought I was having another stroke. It was a different kind of...

KING: Has the senator been very sympathetic?

MCCAIN: Yes. And I -- please don't -- let me explain that. He was very confused in the beginning. He didn't -- like everyone in the family, how could it happen to my wife? I'm 18 years older than she is. It doesn't happen to someone that's younger than you are. So on his behalf, I think he's trying to understand all this. It's a lot for him to take in."

In October 2007, Cindy McCain was hobbling around South Carolina as the result of a fall down in a Phoenix grocery store. Was her fall caused by her brain damage? Is the question any of our business?

Inevitably, the issue of the extent of Cindy McCain's brain damage will enter the public arena. So far, Mrs McCain has only had to field softballs lobbed at her by sympathetic journalists. Can the McCain campaign limit her public appearances to three-minute soundbites until November? I don' think so, not in today's political environment.

Some wag is bound to suggest a debate between Michelle and Cindy. And the jokes and parodies are bound to get a lot meaner from there.

Why, Senator McCain, would you do this to your wife?

I have to agree. My father is a stroke survivor so I DO have a measure of empathy for her. I know first hand how difficult and what a struggle it is to come back 'to life' after a stroke.

But that said, "Game on!" If it were Hillary, Tipper, or Teresa - the NeoCons would be having a field day.

And she's (Cindy) the one who poked at Michelle Obama. So game on.

30. Oddly, the same thugs turned their poison against her and her family, too.
She's had a tough life, if you don't count the mansions and the jillion dollar inheritance and the trust funds and the instant access to all the best social circles. Addiction is a tough thing to overcome and she's managed to do so with great success, apparently. I applaud her spirit and her will power in doing so. I also find the story of how and why they adopted their daughter to be inspirational. They had extra love to give in their home and they gave it freely.

These aren't bad people. The bad people who hate them also hated the wives of all our candidates for equally feckless reasons. I won't join that company. She deserves our sympathy, no our ire. She doesn't deserve to the live in the White House, but she's not exactly Nancy Reagan, either.

33. I hear what you
are saying when you try and round out the view that many have of Cindy-

But just as judging her on her wealth or appearance is pretty....shallow- so is giving kudos to her AND John for Bridgette's adoption, at face value- or should I say based on the story they are playing the media with.

If you really look at the facts, Cindy was addicted when the adoption was happening. She didn't just bring one child back from India, she brought 2- and only kept Bridgette, who's cleft palate they claim meant she would die- which isn't borne out by facts- Cindy impulsively decided, for the FAMILY that she was going to bring the poor damaged little baby home- without really thinking things through or discussing such an important decision with her husband at the very least???

Most average people would never have been able to adopt under the circumstances that she did- her wealth and connections gave her power that some very wonderful potential adoptive families will never have access to. Bridgette seems to have grown and matured into a healthy young woman- which is wonderful, but that doesn't change the facts- Or validate the way in which a vulnerable child was treated with such recklessness.-

I don't like the way people make fun of superficial aspects of others. But I don't like the way the McCain's have used Bridgette-as their 'we're good do-bee's poster child- either. I believe they let Bridgette down by not addressing the slurs of the 2000 race go un addressed, which was a kind of silent approval- and sad acceptance of terrible campaign tactics.

MY empathy and compassion is with the McCain children- especially Bridgette.

peace~

She's done some good in the world with her fortune. Her husband would do a shitty job as president, but we should always remember that the people who smear all Democrats also smeared her family on the vilest terms possible. She's overcome addiction and seems to be holding it together for the stress of the campaign as well.

She's not one of the bad people, she's just supported by them.

There are enough real issues about which to criticize Cindy McCain, just as there were enough real issues about which to criticize the Clintons. We don't need to get into criticism of their appearance. Besides, when we do that, it tends to discount our legitimate criiticsms.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

If you feel criticizing politicians for their looks is valid and important then, by all means, go for it.

That sort of thing eats you up from inside no matter how you deal with it.

http://tiodt.blogspot.com/2006/12/married-to-mob.html

Jim Hensley and his brother Eugene went to work after World War II for Kemper Marley, a wealthy wholesale liquor distributor. Marley, in fact, had once been a bookie, getting his start working for the Transamerica Wire Service, a betting service established by mafiosi Gus Greenbaum (who was murdered with his wife when their throats were slashed in bed in 1958). Until 1947, liquor was rationed by the government. Apparently Marley did quite well in spite of the restrictions, and in 1948 the reason why became clear. Eugene and Jim Hensley were convicted of falsifying records on behalf of Marley's distributorship, United Liquor (along with fifty other Marley employees) to conceal the illegal distribution of hundreds of cases of liquor. Jim Hensley got a six month suspended sentence.

In 1953, Jim Hensley, then the General Manager for United Liquor, was once more charged for doing the same thing again. Marley paid for top notch legal representation though (future Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist.) Hensley still went to prison, but took the fall when the rest of the company was cleared. According to an article in American Mafia.com, Marley rewarded Hensley for his loyalty to the organization:

When Hensley strolled out of the joint, Marley bought his silence with a lucrative Phoenix-based Budweiser beer distributorship.

That distributorship and the rest of Marley's empire did very well over the decades for both Hensley and Marley, making both men multi-millionaires.

(On edit: If her dad went to jail in 1953 or 1954 and she was born in May 1954 -- well, that makes things even weirder, doesn't it?)

That was rather disturbing, to say the least.

Why has the media covered up the fact that Cindy McCain's father went to prison for mafia connecttions and was set up with a beer distributorship for his silence? The hypocrisy of the republicans is stunning, especially since they take such glee in pointing out that the Kennedy family made their fortune as bootleggers.

58. I agree.
Especially when the criticism is based on looks - reminds me of Repukes' comments on Hillary's "fat ankles." What Cindy DOES is fair game if relevant to the issues.

She's got lifeless eyes. Blue eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When she comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until she bites ya, and those blue eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'.....

not first-lady material at all.

62. I've always thought Nellie from "Little House on the Prairie"

But I think the actress that played Nellie does good works as an adult so it's probably an unfair comparison.

All those towns people selling out for the money.

Sounds like republicans to me.

70. Threads like these are counter-productive and beneath us as a group.
Let's take Obama's lead to heart and drop running commentaries like these.

It only makes DU looks juvenile and hateful.

If she does and gets her feelings hurt she can always steal some more "Happy Pills."

We're making fun of a beautiful billionaire.

Oh, the horror! I hope she doesn't get her feelings all hurt and stuff. :sarcasm:

Relax, killer. Alert on this thread and it'll be locked (or not) or moved to the Lounge (or not.)

72. I can't figure why she married McCain
She had all the money, political connections, & 20+ years younger than McCain. So she married an old man who insults her & gets - what? She doesn't seem all that thrilled about being First Lady.

75. she does not seem to be comfortable in her own skin!
Her taking on Michelle seems to be a blunder. She is outrageously rich - via inheritance, had a major drug problem, and does not come across as very likable. Not sure why camp McCain uses her in an attack mode. I don't believe it will go over well.
