Obama leads McCain in 3 'swing states'
Ahead In Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, key pieces of any Electoral puzzle

Here is a notable early read from some important states:

Democrat Barack Obama holds an apparent advantage over Republican John McCain in Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio, according to the results of a new Quinnipiac University "swing state'' survey.

These are all states in which Hillary Clinton prevailed over Obama in the party primaries - though Florida's disputed primary in January was uncontested. In Ohio and Pennsylvania, in particular, the primary contest was portrayed as a question of who might be able to carry working class voters in a general election matchup with McCain.

"Finally getting Sen. Hillary Clinton out of the race has been a big boost for Sen. Barack Obama,'' suggests Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Inttitute.

The results from Quinnipiac's sizable surveys of voters in these three states critical to either presidential candidate in November:

Florida: Obama 47 percent, McCain 43 percent.

Pennsylvania: Obama 52, McCain 40

Ohio: Obama 48, McCain 42.

Obama draws his advantage "with strong support from women, blacks and younger voters,'' Quinnipiac report - noting that this also marks the first time that Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, has led McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, in matchups in these states.

"No one has been elected president since 1960 without taking two of these three largest swing states in the Electoral College,'' the pollsters note.

2. I used to dread this poll coming out
Because the headline was always "Clinton stronger in swing states", as if these three states were the only ones that mattered. This time I was looking forward to it, and I am pleasantly surprised by the results, especially Florida. I don't think Obama can count on winning Florida, but if he doesn't make it look close he'll save McCain a lot of money. This poll keeps McCain on the defensive there.

This is the first poll I've seen him ahead in Florida.
