14. Discussion about diversity and Hillary Clinton
Michelle said there is a level of sexism: "people aren't used to strong women"
Asked about vice-presidential pick, she said she was glad she wasn't a part of that.
Then discussed how girls "break them from cycle of" political discussions at home because it's
all about the girls' soccer games, school, etc..
More after break...

26. I wish she had not said on the Larry King Show a few
months back that she would have to think long and hard about voting for Clinton if she were the nominee. That lingers in the minds of Hillary supporters who now have no choice but to vote for her husband. It's just a small example of some of the mistakes she has made. I'm sure she wishes she had not said that.

I think Michelle is a remarkable woman, and I hope she will work on being representative of ALL Americans. She needs to come across as someone that is hopeful, forgiving and caring about everyone. I don't think she has accomplished that yet, but I'm sure she will as time goes on.

49. If I'm not mistaken you've misquoted Michelle. I don't think she ever
said she wouldn't "vote" for Hillary. I think the question was if she would campaign/support Hillary. I'm sure, as a good Dem, Michelle would vote for the Democrat.

and "thinking long and hard" on whether you would "vote", "campaign" or "support" is not a good "Dem" answer.

60. Hmmm... kinda like when Hillary said that Obama only has a speech
and went on to praise McSame several times during the course of the campaign. Which one is worse? If Michelle needs to exhibit some candor, then so does Hillary and she hasn't done that yet. Why should the standards be different?

64. Yes you most certainly did. Here is the video and the quote
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOVHf9HPEJM

When ABC's Deborah Roberts interviewed Michelle Obama on "Good Morning America" Monday morning, she asked what Obama would do if her husband's rival got the Democratic Party's nomination:

Roberts: "Could you see yourself working to support Hillary Clinton if she gets the nomination?"

Obama: "I'd have to think about that. I'd have to think about policies, her approach, her tone."

That's not everything that Obama had to say on the subject. As Roberts followed up, Obama immediately softened her previous comment.

Roberts: "That's not a given?"

Obama: "You know everyone in this party is going to work hard for whoever the nominee is. I think that, you know, we're all working for the same thing. And, you know, I think our goal is to make sure that the person in the White House is going to take this country in a different direction. I happen to believe that Barack is the only person who can really do that."

71. I was talking about her comment
on the Larry King Show, not the Deborah Roberts interview, but the clip you provided backs up my comment.

Look, don't worry about it. Michelle has made mistakes or she wouldn't be going through so much scrutiny. There is no reason to deny it. I have faith in her and Barack, and I'm sure they will deal with it in a productive way. I'm not putting Michelle down. Like I said previously, I think she is a remarkable woman, but as First Lady, she needs to make America feel she cares about everyone. I think she will accomplish that.

85. I don't see how it backs up your comment Cricket but your other comments are nice
The only comments I can find that she made about Hillary on Larry King were nice comments so I'm not sure what interview you're talking about. Did she do two interviews with Larry King?

The things you call mistakes, I don't. I'm 100% on board with her comments, even the one about not being proud of America during my adult life until now.

Anyway I'm very happy to see you think well of her. She'll be very good for our country.

Here are the comments from the Larry King show. Was there another interview?

KING: Let's talk about the opponent.

Has Hillary surprised you?

You couldn't have known what would have happened on the other side.

M. OBAMA: No. No, but, politics is politics. And I think it's a competitive endeavor. And, you know, it's rough and tumble. I think that she has handled herself well in this respect -- I think that she and Barack, as he says all the time, were good friends and colleagues before this race, and they will be afterwards.

I think, you know, the job that we all have as Democrats is to come out of this thing united and ready to toward a common purpose.

KING: But there had to be days where you were a little ticked.

M. OBAMA: Of course. That's my husband. I love him. I don't want anybody to say anything bad about him. But, you know, I would also, you know, be foolish to think you would enter a race where you wouldn't hear somebody being critical of your husband. So I try not to take it personally.

KING: Do you ever look at it in the sense that it's you against Bill?

M. OBAMA: Oh, absolutely not.

KING: I mean he's first man.

M. OBAMA: Yes.

KING: You're first lady.

M. OBAMA: Well, but he's Bill and I'm Michelle. We're very different people.

(LAUGHTER)

M. OBAMA: But, no, I really focus on what's in front of me at the time.
And, really, when I go before a crowd, I'm thinking about trying to reach peoples' hearts. I mean really do, because I firmly believe that there is a fundamental difference in what Barack can offer. And inspiration is a part of that -- and the ability to connect and unite.

And that's sort of what I'm trying to do when I'm talking. I'm not thinking about Bill or Hillary. I'm not even thinking about Barack. I'm thinking about the people in front of me and what their pains the level of unfairness -- this gap of inequality that is happening with working folks out here, regular folks trying to make it.

So with that, I don't have time to focus on the competition.

I don't know why you wouldn't think a girl who grew up in a working class home doesn't care about everyone. Unless you don't understand that campaigns are full of propaganda and you have a responsibiity to sort out the truth from the lies after the campaign ends.

35. The "really" is irrelevant, if it's about the political process.
And there are two videos -- one where she said really, one where she didn't. She wasn't talking about the country in general, but the political process.

22. Talking about daughters...
Michelle told a cute story about oldest daughter. When asked if she gets nervous appearing at those huge rallies, the daughther said, "Those people aren't there to see me. I'm just a kid. They just think I'm cute. I wave and smile and then I'm out of there."
Michelle is doing great. She got a big standing ovation when she first walked out.The crowd seems to love her.

I can't help but compare her to Laura Bush in some of her interviews where she comes off as the most vapid, vacuous frump whose vocabulary consists of vaiations on why things are so "fun" or how "excited" she is about something. Mrs. Obama is a whip smart woman who is holding her own among these women and has even charmed the pants off Elisabeth!

52. So no one is going to remark on her comment calling Barack
sweet and pathetic? I hope no one takes offense to it. It was said out of love. But I did cringe a little.

:hide:

She is definitely very down to earth.

63. Oh okay. I heard Whoopie say "empathetic" but I thought she was just saying that
I must have heard wrong and I am glad they cleared that up. I was like, dang Michelle! lol! Good. I'm glad they cleared that up if that is not what she said.

75. yeah- ! what struck me was how
Whoopie, and Joy made sure to clear that up, and then someone said it'd be the next internet slur- :)

I appreciate Michelle's honesty- they way she spoke about not wanting Obama to be in politics because it was a mean business- and when I think Elizabeth said something like "the whole family is fair game-" Michelle said that it hadn't been like that for Obama's senate run- Speaking from her position of experience, not as a talking head. She said her not wanting him to run came from a ..'selfish' ... but appropriately selfish position, one that she altered when she considered the bigger picture of what kind of a leader the country needed. I also liked the way Michelle included Elizabeth in on the conversation talking about how important it is for parents to attend pagents etc- and how much of a commitment it is-

The other thing that Michelle said was in refrence to Obama's encouraging fathers to 'step-up'. Michelle made the point that it wasn't just 'fathers'- and she also explained that this is something he has always felt strongly about, saying the best father he could be would be NOT to emulate his own father- I appreciated that it was shown that Obama was not 'talking-down' but rather addressing his peers- something that is important.

What I saw of it - was really interesting, and I encourage everyone to try and see it.

peace~

68. Well damn I'm sorry if I misheard! You don't have to get pissy about it.
Michelle can do no wrong in my eyes so it's whatever. I was just trying to actually excuse the comment if she had said it in the first place but she didn't and that is clear now. Thankyouverymuch.

69. I am pissy
for the simple fact that I don't want to see us starting a talking point that the reThuglicans
can use, I'm just sick and tired that most of what the reThuglicans are using now have been
fueled by some of our own Democrats, and most of it have been started by posters from this
forum.

If someone runs with that, I don't think they were waiting for me to post the question on DU. They make shit up, if you haven't noticed.

86. FWIW- I can understand...
I was sitting close to the TV and the clapping and overtalk drounded out the "em" part or else it would've sounded like pathetic, so no big deal. I think we are all antsy about the repubs looking to jump on anything she says--and it's sad

76. OMGawd..... I rushed from the gym to see it.....

I wish the show was longer for today. The time went super fast. She did a fabulous job. Everyone was happy to have her there. Elizabeth seemed a little lost. Mattew Broderick was annoying. Whoopi was too jumpy. I loved when she talked about HRC. It kinda made me think twice about my negative behavior during primary. :yoiks:

77. Whoopi saying she loved Michelle's fashion and was sick of...
seeing black women being interviewed on tv that had no teeth or if they did, were gold or edged in gold, was one of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard. Guess whoopi didn't see Susan Rice this am on msnbc. Michelle didn't respond.

92. Interesting that Michelle discussed how she likes Pickles.
"That's what I like about Laura Bush. Just calm, rational approach to these issues .. there's a balance, there's a reason people like her is because she's doesn't sort of, you know, fuel the fire."

She said she was touched by "it" and sent her a note about indirectly defending her controversial comment, "...for the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country."
